Beyond School Certificate Tips for Nigerian Youths: Free learning sites

Education is the best legacy

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”

– Nelson Mandela

With the current spike in the unemployment rate in Nigeria and same across the world due to the coronavirus pandemic, today’s workplace requires more than things learned in school.

There are a lot of courses offered in Nigerian universities which have little or no demand in the labour market. This is why the term Beyond School Certificate has become a regular term. You may have likely come across it.

To survive and shield yourself from the unemployment epidemic, it is advisable to have a soft skill or informal skill. Below are some ways to gain a competitive advantage over your fellow graduates.

Programming/Coding

With the high demand and future increase in demand for computer programmers/coders, it is a viable option to vaccinate yourself against Nigeria’s unemployment-virus. To start your journey on this path, you will need to get a computer and access to the internet. If your school has free WiFi, your problem is minimized.

Freecodecamp is a great place to start your learning journey. When you are proficient enough as a beginner, you may begin to take courses on platforms like Coursera. There are free courses there to take.

Writing

With the daily launch of different media houses and blogs, the demand for competent writers is on the rise. Companies are also increasing their budget on content marketing. The opportunity in this industry is endless.

Watch YouTube videos on how to improve your writings. Read books and blogs to sharpen your writing skills.

Many media organisations will employ you if you are good at writing, forget about studying mass communication or any journalism-related course.

You can also search for freelance writing jobs on sites like Upwork, Problogger, and LanreWriter.

Handicraft

Learn handicraft skills such as the making of bags, shoes, crochets, beads, etc. You may enroll with a professional. But if you want to go the free and learn-it-yourself route, watch YouTube videos. There are many crochet makers who boast of being self-taught.

You can sell your crafts on handmade marketplaces like Jeugmark. Success in this endeavor is not overnight, you will need to continually improve your skills and leverage digital marketing to grow your brand.

General Computer Skills

Today, being able to operate a PC is important to be employed in the corporate world. You don’t really need to possess a laptop to learn this skill.

Visit the nearest cybercafe and purchase some minutes to navigate the gadget. You may also make use of your friend’s laptop if you have any.

For special skills such as how to use Microsoft Excel formula, watch YouTube videos, and do Google searches. Offer to work for free to improve your skills.

Digital Marketing

Marketing today is now beyond billboards, TV, and Radio. Since youths spend most of their time on the internet, sellers want to reach them there. Digital marketing can be learned using just your phone. Take Google’s free Digital Marketing course. You will also be offered a certificate at the end of the course.
