1. Buni, Malami move to block convention, governors rise against interim party chair [Punch Newspaper]

There are strong indications that the Yobe State Governor and Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress, Mai Mala Buni, has intensified moves to prevent the party’s national convention scheduled for February from holding.

2. Workers union fears job losses as Standard Chartered closes Nigerian branches [Punch Newspaper]

Bank workers union, the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions, says job losses are looming in the sector over a plan by Standard Chartered Bank to close 50 per cent of its branches in Nigeria.

There were reports on Monday that the United Kingdom-based lender would cut branches in Nigeria and focus more on digital banking.

3. COVID-19: Teachers, students with high temperature shouldn’t be allowed into schools — NCDC [Vanguard Newspaper]

In its continuous efforts to ensure that COVID-19 does not spread in schools, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has warned school operators not to allow teachers and students with high temperatures into their premises.

NCDC also advised students and staff who feel ill to stay at home and seek treatment at a health facility immediately.

The agency also advised all eligible persons to get vaccinated against COVID-19 at its nearby vaccination sites.

4. Ebonyi gov, Umahi, visits Buhari, announces 2023 presidential ambition [NewsWireNGR]

The governor of Ebonyi state, Dave Umahi, has declared his intention to contest for the 2023 presidency.

Umahi revealed his ambition after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammdu Buhari on Tuesday.

This is coming 24 hours after the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also announced his intention after a closed-door meeting with the president. Read more.

5. Orji Kalu wants his name removed from N7.1bn Fraud Charge Sheet [NewsWireNGR]

Former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has filed an application at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to unfreeze his bank account.

He is also seeking an order of the court to strike out his name and that of his company, Slok Nigeria Limited from the N7.1 billion charge levelled against him by the anti-graft agency.

Kalu’s lawyer, Ikoro Ikoro said the application was based on the judgement of Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, delivered on September 29, 2021, which barred the Federal Government from retrying the former governor. Read more.
