The police in Osun State arrests two persons for their role as administrators on a WhatsApp group, where #EndSARS protest mobilization was coordinated.

The two people arrested are Babawale Popoola and Queen Fisayo Aderemi who are co-conveners of the protest in Osun State. They were rounded up at different locations in Osogbo, the state capital.

SERAP, a nonprofit, advocacy group devoted to promoting transparency, accountability & respect for socio-economic rights in Nigeria, Saturday, confirmed the arrests.

“We condemn reported arrest of Babawale Popoola and Fisayo Aderemi by the Osun State Police Command allegedly for being administrators of a WhatsApp group used for mobilisation for #EndSARS protest in the state. We call for their immediate and unconditional release”.

The Police had earlier arrested about four persons on the platform identified as EndSARS Movement Osun .

Thousands of Nigerians marched in Lagos, Osun and other cities to demand an end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, or SARS, a police unit accused of extrajudicial killings and abuses.

The government announced the unit had been disbanded, but many Nigerians are skeptical, as officials have promised an end to the unit and its alleged abuses before.

The government has in the last two weeks clamped down on several persons who played a prominent role in the #EndSARS protests which sought to end police brutality.

The Central Bank of Nigeria had frozen the accounts of 20 #EndSARS champions while another promoter of the movement, Modupe Odele, was prevented from travelling last week and had her passport seized by the Nigeria Immigration Service.
