Turkey alerts Nigeria of new terrorist group, Fethullah

0

The Turkish government has alerted Nigeria about the presence of a terror group, Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETÖ), in the country.

This was communicated by the Turkish Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Mr Mehmet Poroy, who described Fethullah as a proscribed terrorist organisation in Turkey.

Poroy, who was speaking Tuesday night in Abuja at a dinner organised by the Turkish Embassy to mark the country’s Democracy and National Unity Day, said the terrorist group had been using schools and health facilities as a cover for its activities in Nigeria.

Unity Day is observed annually to mark the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016, allegedly orchestrated by the so-called FETO network.

He stated that members of the Gülen movement—accused of sponsoring the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey—were still being apprehended globally, which, he said, “makes their presence in any country a potential national security threat.

“They are still being captured and arrested today. The presence of such an organisation poses a threat to every country in which it operates.

“Unfortunately, the FETO terrorist organisation continues its activities in Nigeria, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare.

“We consistently inform our Nigerian counterparts about the nature and dangers of this organisation and urge them to remain vigilant and cautious,” Poroy said.

The Turkish envoy added that, through international cooperation, Turkey has successfully dismantled several FETO cells and networks operating in allied countries around the world.

According to him, many institutions—especially schools that are part of FETO’s international network—have been taken over by Turkish authorities.

However, he acknowledged that the group’s global structures had not yet been fully dismantled.

“The fact that new investigations and arrests into the organisation continue to be launched demonstrates the need for this struggle to be pursued with unwavering determination.

“You must not forget that behind this humanitarian appearance lies an organisation that seeks to infiltrate the political and bureaucratic institutions of host countries,” Poroy warned.

Reacting, the Defence Headquarters stated that Nigeria remains an independent nation capable of making its own decisions, particularly on security and counterterrorism matters.

Briefing journalists on the military operations in Abuja on Thursday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, said the Defence Headquarters does not recognise the claims as official or verified.

“Information from the person you are talking about, as far as Defence Headquarters is concerned, is an unofficial announcement. Everybody is free to say whatever they want. There is freedom of information, “he said.

He noted that Nigeria cannot be swayed by external commentary or claims that do not align with its own intelligence and national interest.

“Nigeria is an independent sovereign nation that can think and act for itself,” Kangye said.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s diplomatic and military relationships with several countries, Kangye cautioned against accepting unverified foreign narratives, especially those that may undermine national integrity or incite suspicion.

“We cannot take what other people are saying about Nigeria and accept it without our own independent assessment. Nigeria knows what it is, and the Nigerian military has its own code of conduct and operational guidelines,” he said.

Kangye also pointed to the rise of global propaganda and psychological operations, suggesting that foreign assertions could be part of broader strategic manoeuvres.

“There are propagandists all over the world. Psychological oppressions go on everywhere. That’s why we must be vigilant,” he added.

Kangye, however, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fighting terrorism on its own terms, guided by national priorities and internal intelligence.

He reiterated that while the country values its international allies, its security decisions will always reflect its status as a sovereign state.

Also reacting, the Chief Imam of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Amidu Sanni, says Fethullah, is not involved in terrorist activities in Nigeria but only focuses on humanitarian work.

Sanni made the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

He dismissed the Turkish government’s claims, describing them as unfounded and intended to discredit the organisation due to political disagreements.

He said, “This propaganda is the handiwork of agents of corruption and tyranny seeking to silence dissent and discredit the humanitarian work of the organisation, which is dedicated to supporting the vulnerable in Nigeria.

“FETO has demonstrated an enviable commitment to a global initiative of eradicating ignorance, disease, inter-religious disharmony.

“And to the provision of a sustainable individual and community empowerment all over the world regardless of political, ethnic, and religious affiliations.

“The activities of the organisation are open, verifiable, and impactful. The Turkish government is hereby advised to stop this campaign of falsehood and state-sponsored propaganda of calumny,” he said.

The Gülen movement, (known as Hizmet or Service in Turk language), is purportedly a transnational, religious, educational, and social organisation, founded in late 1950.

Its founder, Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish Islamic scholar, died as a Turkish fugitive in October 2024 at the age of 83, in Pennsylvania, United States.

The Turkish government accuses Gülen of masterminding the 2016 bloody coup, which claimed at least 251 lives, and had officially designated the group as a global terrorist organisation.

NAN also reports that the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as countries such as Pakistan and Northern Cyprus, have designated FETO as a terrorist organisation.

It further reports that the Federal Government of Nigeria, on Wednesday, stated that the FETO group was not involved in any terrorist activities within the country.

Buhari’s fan promises to gift grave diggers N1m

0

A fan of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji Sirajo Yazid-Abukur, has promised N1million to the labourers who dug the grave where he was buried at his Daura residence.

Yazid-Abukur, who is the Managing Director, Katsina State Roads Maintenance Agency (KASSROMA), made this known in Katsina on Thursday following the viral video of the labourers.

He was quoted by NAN to have pledged that the team leader of the grave diggers, Malam Muhammad Ali, will receive N500,000, while the two other members will receive N250,000 each.

He revealed that he has sent for the labourers, saying that the money can serve as capital for the trio to set up businesses that can sustain them and their families.

Yazid-Abukur further commended Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State for the deep concern he has shown before, during and after the burial of Buhari.

He said getting physically involved in the burial of the late former president showed the Governor’s loyalty, humility and leadership qualities.

The KASSROMA boss also prayed to the Almighty Allah to forgive the former president’s shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus.

NewsWireNGR recalls that the former president died on Sunday at a London hospital after a protracted illness, and his remains were returned to Nigeria on Tuesday.

The late former president’s remains were accompanied from London by the Vice-President Kashim Shettima, along with other top government officials and Buhari’s immediate family.

Upon arrival at the Ummaru Musa Yar’adua International Airport Katsina, the body of the late Buhari was received by President Bola Tinubu.

The body was accompanied by the president and other dignitaries to Daura, the hometown of the late former president, where he was laid to rest in his personal residence.

‘Hold governments accountable for healthcare services’, resident doctors told

0

A maxillofacial traumatologist and the Medical Director, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Benin City, Dr. Philip Ugbodag, a has urged medical unions in the health sector to hold the governments at all levels accountable for how they spend public funds allocated to healthcare for improving the quality of healthcare and basic services in the country.

Ugbodaga made this statement weekend in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital as the guest speaker at the ongoing Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) Ordinary General Meeting, with the theme “The Medical Profession: Policies, Politics and Future Prospects”

He said that President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the quality of healthcare services for Nigerians is unquestionable by making the most ambitious financial Investment in the health sector in the history of the country with a health sector budget of 1.502 Trillion Naira in 2024 and an unprecedented 2.48 trillion Naira in 2025.

He said these investments are to revitalize Primary Health Centres (PHCs), expand health insurance coverage, strengthen health security and expand health infrastructure.

Ugbodaga said, “As the most vibrant branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), in line with your association’s bye-laws, I urge you to hold the federal government represented by the Chief Executives of federal health institutions, as well as the state and local governments, accountable for providing improved quality healthcare services and basic services that we need as a people to create a healthier nation.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made the most profound statement on healthcare in the history of our country when he declared On 12 December 2023 that “health is back on the front burner of Nigeria’s policy priorities” This declaration was a pivotal moment, signaling a renewed commitment to the well-being of Nigerians under the Renewed Hope Agenda. With this bold vision, the administration launched the National Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) setting in motion a transformative journey to rebuild Nigeria’s health system into one that is equitable, resilient, and accessible to all”.

The Medical Director noted that, “a critical review of the FGN’s 2025 health budget disclosed that the government is intentional about using its expenditure to fast track health infrastructure transformation and drive overall social and economic development since citizen’s wellbeing is a major contributor to a country’s overall development.

“I would like to say that the lives of Nigerians, particularly women and children, are at stake, especially the poorest among us. We must do everything we can to safeguard them, and we must be relentless in our resolve to deliver an efficient, equitable, and quality healthcare system for all Nigerians,” he added.

“I call on the leadership and members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to be resilient in the face of obvious challenges, because the task ahead is huge, but it requires our collective efforts, and we can do this through collaboration with the other healthcare professionals. I call on you, including other health workers to continue working with Chief Executive Officers of federal tertiary hospitals as we chart a path towards improving the health of all Nigerians.

At least 43 people have been killed in fresh attacks on communities in Gwer West and Apa Local Government Areas of Benue State

0

At least 43 people have been killed in fresh attacks on communities in Gwer West and Apa Local Government Areas of Benue State.

The latest attacks, which occurred Sunday evening, marks another bloody episode just one week after over 40 people, including a police officer, were killed in similar attacks on villages within Gwer West.

Locals told newsmen in Makurdi that the attackers stormed Tse Antswam, a suburb of Naka town in Gwer West LGA, around 7 pm and opened fire indiscriminately, leaving at least 18 dead and many others wounded.

Survivors said several villagers fled into nearby bushes or even jumped into wells to escape the onslaught.

The traditional ruler of the area, Ter Nagi, Chief Daniel Abomtse, confirmed the death toll and described the style of the attack as guerrilla-like.

He said, “As of this morning, 18 bodies have been recovered. Some of the wounded may not survive because they were badly butchered. The search for more victims is ongoing.”

Abomtse noted that the affected village lies opposite a military checkpoint along the abandoned Naka–Makurdi road, which according to him, raises further concerns over the brazenness of the attackers.

In Apa LGA, the attacks were equally devastating as local sources said gunmen invaded the Edikwu Ankpali community around the same time as the Naka attack, killing over 25 people.

A resident, who simply identified himself as Tony, told journalists in Makurdi on the telephone that, “Over 25 corpses have been counted in Edikwu Ankpali. Burial arrangements are already underway for some of the victims.”

NITDA has announced major collaborative efforts to tackle cybercrime

0

The Nigerian government through the Ministry of Communications Digital Economy, Office of the National Security Advisor, ONSA, and National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, has announced major collaborative efforts to tackle the challenge.

The government said it intends to build a stronger global collaboration with the global cybersecurity ecosystem since crime has no particular base.

It stated this in Abuja on Monday while announcing the National Cybersecurity Conference to be held in Abuja in July 2025.

Addressing the press, Sa’ad Abubakar, the National Cybersecurity Coordinator from the Office of National Security Advisor, said fighting cybercrime must take the whole of society and the whole of the government approach.

According to him, apart from the deterrent approach whereby government agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC arrest individuals, take them to court and prosecute them, the youth can be nurtured into better citizens who can showcase their capacity in better ways and be useful to the country.

The Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Abdullahi, added that works are already ongoing on the Cyber Crime Act.

“Then, in addition to that, we also want to build a stronger global collaboration with the international cyber security ecosystem, because when you look at cybercrime in general, it doesn’t respect the borders.

“Someone can commit a crime from Ghana using a Nigerian ID in the US. So you can look at him physically in a different jurisdiction, pretending to be in another jurisdiction, committing the crime in another jurisdiction.
“So without that kind of synergy and working together, it will be difficult to address these challenges. The third one, the challenge. The third one is getting an alternative to cybercrime for our kids in Nigeria. We have this as a major challenge.

“Here we have the talent, but they don’t know how to use that talent positively, so exposing them to these kinds of opportunities [National Cybersecurity Conference] will open their minds to channel the talent for a positive impact.

“So allow them to participate in the hackathon, training, opportunity for networking, as well as to display their own talent and see how we can link them up with investors if they want to build solutions, and even mentorship for them to develop those solutions.

“So these are the three things we are looking at if we want to see this conference be successful like we do.”

Former Senator and rights activist, Shehu Sani, has urged the North to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections

0

Former Senator and rights activist, Shehu Sani, has urged the North to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Sani, who spoke in an interview with journalists in Kaduna on Monday, said the North appreciated the progress made so far under President Tinubu.

“For those of us from this part (North) of the country, we appreciate the progress made so far by this present government and for those of them who had the opportunity to do better and they failed, we tell them that they should apologise for the wrong they have done to the people of the North,” he said.

The activist charged the North not to allow themselves be incited against a government that is doing far better than the one that came from their side, adding that they should not be incited against the President who had supported their own for eight years in power.

According to him, Nigeria is not just a country but one that came from horrible and terrible experiences as a nation.

“And we ought to learn from our past experiences in order not to repeat the same experience. So I want to call on the people to caution the elements who had the opportunity to turn the North to paradise but left it as hell but today such elements are crying foul for no reason other than that they have been excluded from the government.

“So their grievances are about their own personal interests and not about the people, not about the North, not about the masses, not about insecurity and governance. However, everybody has the right to voice out his opinions but it shouldn’t be done in such a way to burn down the country,” he added.

No fewer than 15 parishes under the Makurdi Catholic Diocese in Benue State have been shut down due to repeated attacks

0

No fewer than 15 parishes under the Makurdi Catholic Diocese in Benue State have been shut down due to repeated attacks on host communities by suspected armed herders.

The disclosure was made on Sunday by Rev. Fr Joseph Beba, Chairman of the Nigerian Catholic Diocesan Priests Association, NCDPA, Makurdi Diocese, during a press briefing at the Catholic Cathedral in Makurdi.

Fr Beba said the affected communities, Tse Orbiam, Ahume, Jimba, Nagi-Camp, Aondoana, Yelewata, and Abegana, have witnessed coordinated violence in the past two weeks, resulting in the deaths of over 50 residents, including women and children.

“More than 15 parishes have been shut down because their host communities have been completely displaced. In places like Jimba, Mbalom Yelwata, and Aondoana, both priests and parishioners have fled,” he said.

He alleged that the escalation in violence, particularly in Gwer West Local Government Area, followed the testimony of the Bishop of Makurdi Diocese, Most Rev. Wilfred Anagbe, in the United States and Europe on the persecution of Christians in Benue and Nigeria.

“These attacks are not random. They are a direct response to Bishop Anagbe’s international testimony on the systematic persecution of Christians. The Church is under siege,” Fr Beba declared.

Thirty-three persons have been feared killed by suspected herdsmen in coordinated attacks on Benue

0

Thirty-three persons have been feared killed by suspected herdsmen in coordinated attacks on Gwer West and Apa Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State, leaving many residents missing as the affected communities begin headcounts on Monday morning.

At about 7pm on Sunday, residents of Tse-Antswam in Naka town, the headquarters of Gwer West LGA came under attack by suspected herdsmen, leaving 17 people dead, as others fled for their lives.

A community leader, Patrick Modoom, confirmed the casualty figures to Channels Television via telephone. “Seventeen corpses have so far been recovered at Tse-Antswam, a community by the LGEA primary school Naka, close to the Federal Government Dam project,” he said.

Modoom added that “many people are still missing as headcount is being carried out, with many others displaced into the primary school where police personnel from the town and vigilantes are providing security”.

“This attack happened not too far from the military checkpoint from Naka town but not a single response from the military when we raised alarm about the attack, leaving our people vulnerable while the attack lasted,” he added.

Gwer West has 15 political council wards and 14 of those have been affected by herdsmen attacks, leaving Naka town as the safe place to run for the people but last night’s attack has compromised public safety at the local government headquarters.

Nyesom Wike says Amaechi is hungry for Power

0

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday, censured former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi over his hunger comment.

At a media parley in the nation’s capital Abuja, Wike said Amaechi can’t stay out of power and his hunger comment was an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians.

Wike said with over two unbroken decades in various top public offices, Amaechi can’t claim that he is hungry for food.

Wike and Amaechi are both political gladiators in oil-rich Rivers State in Nigeria’s riverine Niger Delta area. The two share a history of being former governors.

Wike said, “I don’t know why a man would choose his 60th birthday to tell lies. It’s unfortunate. Of all times, on your 60th birthday when people are celebrating you?

“He was (Rivers State) Speaker from 1999 to 2007. He was the most pampered speaker. He became a governor from 2007 to 2015. Eight years as Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker, and eight years as governor, he never talked about hunger.

“He became a minister from 2015 to 2023, eight years as a super minister of transport. When he was borrowing money (for projects), he didn’t talk about hunger.”

Akwa Ibom governor’s daughter accuses dad, her father of sacrificing first lady for “rituals”

0

The daughter of Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, Jane Edidiong Ufot, has posted a video on social media accusing him of sacrificing his deceased wife (her mother).

First Lady, Patience Oluwakemi Umo Eno died in September 2024 over an undisclosed illness.

Mrs Ufot, appointed as a senior special adviser to the governor on health, safety and environment, blasted her father, insisting that she would not be sacrificed the way her mother was, alleging a sinister threat to her life.”

“I’m not a sacrifice, mummy was, but I’m not,” thundered the governor’s daughter.

Mrs Ufot handed the phone to her little daughter, who appeared to be on a video call with Mr Eno. Mrs Ufot told her daughter to ask the governor whether he wanted to kill her (his grandchild).

“So, Grandpa, do you want them to kill us?” the minor asked, repeating the question as instructed. “Do you want them to die like my baby brother died?”

Mrs Ufot said her life was on the line due to undisclosed revelations that may soon come to light.

“If I die today or my daughter dies. If we die because God is exposing the truth, so be it. But my blood will not go scot-free,” the governor’s daughter cried out.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has disclosed that he has not collected a single loan since he assumed office

0

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has disclosed that he has not collected a single loan from any local or international financial institution since he assumed office two years ago.

The Governor made this known while fielding questions during a Hausa interview with some radio stations in Kaduna, as part of the celebration of his two years in office.

According to Sani, several banks had approached him to collect loans under different guises but he refused to accede to their requests because he didn’t want to sink the state into further debt.

The governor disclosed that he cut the allowances and some perks of his Secretary to the State Government and Commissioners, to run an efficient administration.

‘’The Secretary to the State Government is a retired federal Permanent Secretary, who is also a former consultant with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Some of my Commissioners were receiving big salaries in their former places of work.

‘’I persuaded them to forfeit their performance bonuses and to use the old cars that their predecessors used in the last administration. This is how we have been running the administration without collecting a single loan,’’ he added.

Governor Sani also said that he leveraged his contacts and the connections that he made throughout his career as a human rights activist and a Senator to secure grants from donor agencies.

He said that the Qatar Charity is constructing the Kaduna Economic City and embarking on a Mass Housing project at the Millennium City, adding that the houses will soon be completed.
