Yobe gov, Mai Mala Buni, remains in APC, not joining coalition at ADC — Aide

0

The Yobe State Government has denied reports that Governor Mai Mala Buni is planning to defect to the African Democratic Congress, a party adopted by the coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress come 2027, the next presidential election.

The Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Mamman Mohammed, in an interview with PUNCH Online on Wednesday in Damaturu, the state capital, debunked purported defection plan by Governor Buni.

Mohammed said the report had been debunked earlier and should not be taken seriously.

According to Mohammed, the report of Buni defecting to ADC is not true, adding that the report is baseless and unfounded.

He said, “It’s a wild dream of the author. Someone had earlier speculated this and was debunked. It’s an empty speculation.”

Mohammed stated that Buni, being a two-term governor under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, would be the last person to leave the ruling party.

He warned speculators to always be mindful of their claims, especially when it comes to credible and loyal party members like the Yobe governor.

Reps approve Tinubu’s request to borrow $347m for Lagos-Calabar highway, others

0

The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to the National Assembly, seeking approval to borrow $347m under the 2025–2026 borrowing plan.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, read the President’s correspondence on the floor of the Green Chamber during Wednesday’s plenary.

According to the President, the loan is necessary due to a rise in the funding needs for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, whose cost increased by $47m, from $700m to $747m.

Justifying the loan request, the President said that when the borrowing plan was transmitted to the parliament, the lead arranger for financing only had financing commitments of up $700m from lenders, stressing that the shortfall in the financing was covered by export credit agencies.

“It is, therefore, necessary to increase the value of the financing for the project by $47m to ensure it aligns with the loan size agreed in the finance documents for the project,” the President said in the letter.

He noted that $300m is needed for the Nigerian universal communications access project, a landmark telecommunications initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide through the deployment of 7,000 telecommunications towers across hard-to-reach rural dwellings.

Zone 2027 presidency to South, PDP founding fathers urge party leadership

0

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) founding fathers have urged the party leadership and stakeholders to adopt a strategy that would produce the party’s 2027 Presidential Candidate from the Southern part of Nigeria.

Prof. Jerry Gana spoke on behalf of the founding fathers at a PDP Consultative Conference convened by the elder statesmen on Wednesday in Abuja.

Gana said that such a strategy would not only ensure victory at the polls, but promote justice, fairness and equity.

He also stressed the need for the party to resolve to present a popular, credible and highly experienced presidential candidate for the election.

“From our renewed foundation, we should conduct a fair process to produce our Presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential elections.

“We should present to Nigerians not just a candidate, but a visionary leader – a tested and trusted patriot, a proven solution-provider, with a huge capacity and character to rescue Nigeria,” he said.

In line with the PDP’s commitment to youth inclusion, Gana urged the party to deliberately open space for brilliant, energetic, and innovative young Nigerians to participate actively as leaders and candidates in the 2027 general elections.

“The PDP must deliberately open the space for younger Nigerians; brilliant, energetic and innovative minds should be allowed to participate actively as leaders within our party structures and as candidates at all levels in the 2027 general elections.

“Their ideas, energy and digital fluency are essential for building the Nigeria we all deserve.

“Our 2027 electoral strategy must elevate young leaders with fresh ideas and proven commitment.

“We should deliberately mainstream youth and women into our party’s core leadership structure, ensuring that their voices are heard and their contributions are highly valued,” he said.

Gana also appealed to all PDP leaders to agree at Thursday National Electoral committee (NEC) meeting to convene the National Convention of the party to elect a fresh set of party officers, for the next four years.

He added that the party must also ensure a transparent and credible national convention that would set a gold standard for internal party democracy.

“The convention must be transparent, accountable, and reflective of our democratic ideals.

“No more backroom deals or impositions. Delegates should freely elect a new National Working Committee (NWC); men and women of proven integrity, competence, and unwavering loyalty to the ideals of PDP.

“The new NWC should be the engine room of our rebuilding, repositioning and resurgence of the PDP,” Gana said.

Gana, who decried the level of insecurity, inflation, and unemployment in Nigeria, said that the PDP founding fathers would soon unveil a “practical, solutions-driven manifesto” designed as a national recovery blueprint focusing on six strategic fronts.

These, according to him, would include stability and good governance, lasting peace and security, economic transformation (shifting from consumption to production).

He said that the manifesto would also include rebuilding basic infrastructure, increasing agricultural production, ensuring sound education and sustainable healthcare delivery.

Gana affirmed the party’s commitment to rescuing Nigeria and restoring good governance, saying that “hope is not lost”.

“A new PDP is emerging, reformed, responsive, and ready,” Gana said.

Party leaders at the conference include PDP governors, Board of Trustees members, National Assembly members, former governors, former ministers, ambassadors, women and youth leaders.

Tragedy! Father kills son with homemade gun at birthday party

A man shot and killed his son with a homemade gun during a birthday party he threw for his father, police said on Tuesday.

The 63-year-old shooter was detained without a warrant after the police were alerted to a shooting at an apartment in Incheon, west of Seoul.

The man is suspected of firing two shots at his son in his 30s during the party, which was also attended by his daughter-in-law, his two grandchildren and friends, police said.

The motive behind the suspect’s shooting was not known.

The gun was in pipe-form and the bullets hit the son’s chest, he was moved to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said a special unit team discovered 15 explosive devices at the suspect’s home and safely dismantled and removed them.

One device was connected to an ignition by a plastic bottle containing flammable liquid and was set to go off.

In addition to the two homemade guns he used to shoot his son, nine other guns were discovered in the suspect’s car, while five to six metal pipes were found at his home.

Police said they searched the home in Seoul’s northern district of Dobong after the suspect told investigators he had installed an explosive device there.

Authorities promptly evacuated 105 residents from the building before conducting the search.

Nigeria’s apex bank maintains lending rate at 27.5%

0

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has, once again, kept its key lending rate, known as the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), at 27.5 per cent.

The Governor of CBN, Yemi Cardoso, announced the decision on Tuesday in Abuja, following the 301st Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.

Cardoso said that all 12 MPC members voted unanimously to hold all key monetary parameters.

The committee, thus, retained the cash reserve ratio at 50 per cent for deposit money banks and 16 per cent for merchant banks.

It also retained liquidity ratio at 30 per cent, and the asymmetric corridor was held at +500/-100 basis points around the MPR.

With this decision, the MPC has retained the rates for three consecutive meetings.

‘It’s a simple advice’: Edo governor, Okpebholo, denies threatening Peter Obi

0

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo has denied threatening the former governor of Anambra state, Mr Peter Obi, over visiting Edo state without his approval.

He said he has no regret asking the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election to notify him before visiting the state.

Okpebholo made the clarification on Tuesday in Benin at the official inauguration of the new Edo Line, a transport company owned by the state government.

According to him, the directive to Obi was an advice and should not be misinterpreted or taken out of context as a threat.

He disclosed that his own failure to heed such advice from the Commissioner of Police in 2024 led to the death of his police orderly.

“Because of the rain, I won’t say much. Even when I said just one word, people were already crying.

“What I said was a simple advice. I told him not to visit Edo without informing me. As chief security officer, it’s a basic protocol.

“If asking him to notify me is considered a crime, so be it. I have no regrets.

“Let me not dwell on irrelevant matters. This is not important. To the people of Edo, our message and intention have already been made clear.

“I don’t understand their pain. Is it because I said they don’t have ‘shishi’? Didn’t they say they don’t have ‘shishi’?” Okpebholo asked .

He recalled being similarly advised by the commissioner of police in 2024, when he arrived Benin Airport, under former governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration.

“The commissioner saw me and asked me to remain at the airport. I ignored him. At the gate, my police orderly was shot dead.

“Inspector Akor Onu was killed before my very eyes. That painful experience still guides how I view security warnings and protocols to this very day.”

“I’ve seen security reports. I’ve advised Obi. If he listens, good. If not, it’s his choice. It doesn’t concern me,” he added.

Okpebholo, however, attributed the launch of the new Edo Line to the state’s improved federal allocation, which he said made the project possible.

He also credited the success to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying that without a father like him, the dream of reviving Edo line would never have been possible.

“This dream could never come true without a father like the President. He truly cares about Edo and the entire South-South region.

“In Edo, we must always thank the President. He has shown genuine love, funding us, monitoring us, and helping transform our vision into visible reality.

“President Tinubu brought practical governance to Edo. His Renewed Hope Agenda is transforming the country,” he stated.

He expressed appreciation to the people of Edo for voting for him, saying that their support was a clear sign that progress was truly underway.

“What we’re witnessing today is a dream fulfilled. The people of Edo have been in the wilderness for years. Now, change has finally arrived,” he added.

Also speaking, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, guest of honour at the event, supported Governor Okpebholo’s stance on security protocols for high-profile Nigerians.

Wike emphasised that high-profile Nigerians, including Peter Obi, must inform a state governor before visiting to ensure that adequate security measures were provided for their safety.

He explained that when Peter Obi visited him in Rivers during his tenure, Obi secured official clearance beforehand, respecting security protocols and standard procedures accordingly.

Wike expressed surprise that Obi failed to follow similar protocols when he visited Edo, questioning why such a crucial step was skipped.

“I thank God for Edo people for standing firm during Monday Okpebholo’s election. As far as I’m concerned, the governor is focused and prepared.”

” I do not identify with failure. I identify with people who mean well for their people.

“You have also resolved the problem of students, women, and men travelling.

“You have actually shown your support for our President in practical terms by your performance,” he said.

According to him, your performance will give you the confidence to always come home even after your tenure as governor.

What the Next Decade Actually Looks Like for the Casino Industry

0

The casino industry’s always had a knack for reinventing itself. It went from smoky back rooms to luxury mega-resorts, then from clunky desktop games to slick mobile platforms, all in the space of a few decades. Today, if you’re playing online through something like Betway casino, you’re already seeing how far things have come.

But what’s next? Not in a science-fiction way. We’re not talking about strapping on headsets or being greeted by a 3D hologram named “DealerBot3000.” We’re talking about changes that are already unfolding quietly, steadily, and in ways that actually matter to players.

Games Are Getting… Gamey

The lines between casino games and video games are starting to blur, and that’s a good thing.

New titles are borrowing from mobile gaming mechanics. We’re talking challenges, unlockable features, mini-missions, leaderboards. You’re not just spinning reels anymore. You’re making decisions. Timing things. Getting rewarded for streaks and momentum.

Aviator is the best example of this shift. It’s not a complicated game. But it gives you control, suspense, and just enough edge to feel like you’re playing, not just watching.

Expect more of that over the next few years: fast-paced formats with actual gameplay loops. Less passive. More reactive. A bit like casual gaming… just with real stakes.

It’s Better With People

For all its convenience, online casino play can be weirdly lonely. That’s changing fast.

Games that layer in real-time social elements, like shared betting rounds or live “crash” moments, are already getting traction. It’s not about chatting endlessly with strangers. It’s about having that “I saw that too” moment with other players. You’re reacting together. And that shared suspense? Way more fun than playing in a vacuum.

The next wave of social features won’t be poker lobbies or virtual bars. It’ll be subtle things: watching friends’ bets land in real time, earning group bonuses, maybe even competing in low-stakes tournaments. Light, but sticky.

Smarter Regulation (Finally)

Here’s something that doesn’t sound exciting, but actually is: regulation is getting less confusing.

Countries like Ghana are already refining licensing systems, making it clearer who’s legit and who’s just faking the interface. And over the next decade, that’s going to be the norm.

Operators like Betway casino already follow the book: local licenses, clear terms, consistent payout structures. But now, governments are catching up, tightening oversight in a way that actually helps players, not just box-ticking.

The result? Fewer shady platforms, more reliable experiences, and a bit more peace of mind when you cash out.

Less Flash, Better Offers

Online casinos used to shout at you. Banners, pop-ups, “1000% BONUS” flying in from all sides. That stuff’s on the way out.

What’s replacing it? Cleaner, smarter marketing. Think loyalty systems that reward consistent play. Bonuses that don’t come with a 42-page playthrough requirement. Offers tied to specific games or events you actually care about.

In other words, the industry’s learning how to talk to players like adults.

Live Games Will Keep Getting Weirder (And That’s a Win)

Live dealer tables have already brought a human touch to online play. But the real growth area? The weird stuff.

We’re talking gameshow-inspired formats, quiz-style rounds, and time-limited group events with prize pools. It’s not about mimicking Vegas, it’s about creating experiences that feel new.

Picture a live-hosted crash game with a prize drop every 20 minutes. Or a roulette stream where every tenth spin comes with a random multiplier and a side challenge. These aren’t gimmicks: they’re sticky, replayable, and fun.

And platforms like Betway casino are well-positioned to build these kinds of experiences, especially for mobile-first markets.

So, What’s Actually Changing?

The core mechanics aren’t going anywhere. There’ll still be blackjack. Still be spins. Still be someone asking the dealer to “hit” on 15 and breaking hearts at the table.

But around that? Everything’s getting sharper:

  • More engaging game design
  • Social layers that feel natural
  • Regulatory clarity that actually helps players
  • Marketing that respects your time and wallet
  • Live content that’s more creative than ever

No gimmicks. No buzzwords. Just smarter evolution.

Army arrests two NURTW members for allegedly transporting arms to terrorists

0

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) says troops of Operation Hadin Kai have apprehended two members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for allegedly transporting arms to terrorists.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, disclosed this on Thursday while providing updates on military operations across the country.

Kangye said the troops arrested the transport union officials at Liya in Biu Local Government Area(LGA) of Borno State.

According to him, the troops also arrested 11 terrorist collaborators and rescued seven kidnapped victims in the North East.

He added that 16 family members of terrorists — including four adult females and 12 children — surrendered to troops in Bama LGA of Borno on Monday.

According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that the group surrendered from Bakura Jega village.

“Two members of NURTW were arrested in Liya, Biu LGA of Borno while receiving waybill from a truck driver which corresponded with intelligence received earlier on the said consignment.

“The items include 13 pairs of military uniforms and some high voltage batteries amongst others.

“Troops also arrested a 65-year-old man, a terrorists’ logistics supplier at Damasak Motor Park in Yobe on Sunday.

“Troops recovered some quantities of arms and ammunition were also recovered.

“They also retrieved and safely detonated some IEDs, while the sum of N17,150.00 was also recovered,” he said.

Kangye also disclosed that troops of Operation UDO KA, also apprehended a tax collector for the Indigenous People of Biafra and Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) in Anambra.

He said the suspect was nabbed with the sum of N1.5 million in his possession.

“On July 10, troops arrested an POB/ESN terrorists’ collaborator who was commissioned by the terrorists to collect taxes from the locals on their behalf in Ihiala LGA of Anambra.

“The troops recovered the sum of N1.5 million from the suspect,” he said.

Alleged N110bn Fraud: Yahaya Bello’s Passport not in our custody — Abuja court

0

An FCT High Court says the international passport of the immediate-past Governor of Kogi, Yahaya Bello, was not in its custody but in the custody of the Federal High Court.

Justice Maryanne Anenih made this known on Thursday at the resumed hearing of the alleged money laundering case instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against the former governor,

She held that the court would have considered the application for the release of the defendant’s travel document if it were to be in its custody.

The judge said even if the request to retrieve the travel passport were to be granted, it would be of no effect since the passport was not in the custody of the court.

Bello, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu were arraigned on Nov 27 , 2024 on a 16-count- charge bordering on alleged property fraud to the tune of N110 billion..

Anenih also noted that the court could have considered the submissions of the counsels if the international passport had been before the FCT High Court; however, the application was incompetent.

The judge stated that the application submitted by Bello was misleading in its assumption that his passport was before the FCT High Court.

She clarified that the bail conditions given to the defendant had required him to submit his international passport or an affidavit if it was before another court.

Furthermore, the bail conditions directed Bello to release his passport immediately after it was released by the Federal High Court, where he was facing a separate charge.

The judge also noted that Bello had sworn in his affidavit that the passport was with the deputy registrar of the Federal High Court and would present it as soon as it “is released to me by the Federal High Court.”

“The international passport cannot be in two places at the same time; this court is not in a position to speculate if he has two passports,” because this fact was not presented before the court.

After the ruling, Anenih adjourned until
Oct. 8 for its continuation of trial.

The former governor is facing a similar charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He had filed an application, requesting for the release of his international passport to enable him to travel out of the country on health grounds.

Counsel to the defendant, Joseph Daudu, SAN, had earlier submitted that the international passport being requested was not in the custody of the Court.

A review of the Court’s record revealed that the applicant had previously been ordered to deposit his international passport and other travel documents with the registry of the Court.

However, upon further enquiry and search conducted by the Court, it was discovered that the said international passport was not presently in the custody of the Court’s registry.

Bello , in his application, had also indicated that his travel documents were with the Federal High Court.

The court had, on July 8, adjourned ruling on the defendant’s application to Thursday, July 17.

Daudu, SAN, told the court that the application was dated 19th June, 2025 and filed on June 20, 2025.

“It seeks an order for the release of the 1st defendant/applicant’s international passport by the registrar to enable him to travel for medical attention,” he had said.

The counsel said the application was supported by an affidavit of 13 grounds in the face of the motion and supported by a 22 paragraphs affidavit deposed to by the applicant himself.

The EFCC Counsel had, however, filed a counter-affidavit, application should not be granted.

11,000 Hectares: UniAbuja Acting VC denies land grabbing accusation by Nigeria’s minister

0

Professor Lar Patricia Manko, acting Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University (Former University of Abuja) has reacted to the allegation of land grabbing against the institution by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

In an interview with newsmen in Abuja, Manko said that the 11,000 hectares of land, is a legacy asset given to the institution by the Federal Government.

While acknowledging Wike as FCT landlord, the VC said University land can never be too much and the institution has plethora of use for the property.

Recall that, at the inauguration of access road to Giri district in FCT on June 30, Wike alleged that the university “grabbed 11,000” hectares of land.

“No document, nothing. That’s all you see there, fencing everywhere. And before you know it, they were going to sell our land.

“So, I’ve told the Director of Lands and the other relevant agencies to carve out 4,000 hectares and give it to the university.

“They are the ones who are going to protect it because we are going to provide the roads here.

“And that’s the situation. We cannot allow it at all,” the minister had said.

Manko, however, said that the 11,000 hectares of land was legitimately given to the institution by the federal government and the controversy is already being handled.

She said the university has plans for the use of the expanse of land ranging from agriculture, tourism, research centres, quarters for members of staff and student hostels, among others.

The acting VC said due to lack of fund to finance some of the projects, the institution has entered into some Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for the development.

She noted that the current staff quarters of the institution are temporarily built on plots of land given to the university by the military and there are plans to construct permanent structures at the institution’s permanent site.

The acting VC said there are many investors who are partnering with the institution in the development of the projects on the 11,000 hectares of land.
