Presidency has described those calling for the removal of President Bola Tinubu from office as “power-hungry politicians”

0

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has described those calling for the removal of President Bola Tinubu from office as “power-hungry politicians” who feel politically displaced.

He spoke against the backdrop of comments of former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir el-ERufai, that the President would not be re-elected in 2027.

The former Kaduna governor had, in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics programme on Sunday night, said: “I was governor of Kaduna State; I was one of Bola Tinubu’s biggest campaigners, but I couldn’t deliver the state to him. Bola Tinubu himself couldn’t win his state with his own governor in place. So, these things are not as theoretical as people want them to be.

“If you want to engage in self-delusion, you are free to do so. I will not tell you how we are going to win, but I tell you very clearly, the worst-case scenario in the 2027 elections is that no winner will emerge in the first round.

“We may have to go for a runoff, and Bola Tinubu will not be on the ballot for the runoff because he will, at best, be third in the election. He has no pathway to win. I have done the maths, I have done the analysis; he cannot, he will, at best, be third.

“But he can deceive himself; he may think, oh, you know, I have money, because they have taken all the money in the country, I have INEC, I have the police, I have the army. You know what, President Tinubu, invite ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for a chat, and ask him if he didn’t have all these in 2015, and we got him out. Is the case still the same? Similar to 2015? It’s worse.

“It’s like those who say Tinubu has never lost an election. That can be contested, but it’s okay, he’s a political strategist, he’s this, he’s that. Wait.

“I naturally have said, if you want to learn some lessons, invite ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for a chat over coffee, and ask him what happened in 2015. That’s all.’’

But reacting yesterday, Onanuga, in a statement via his X handle, accused el-Rufai of being at the forefront of the campaign of removing the President, despite admitting in the past that four years was not enough for any leader to deliver “meaningful changes.”

He said: “Nasir El-Rufai confesses here that four years is not enough for a political office holder to make ‘meaningful changes’. Yet he is at the forefront of the gang of political desperados plotting President Tinubu’s ouster, just two years into his tenure. What a contradiction!

“In contrast to the political laggards and underachievers who were once governors in Anambra, Rivers and Kaduna states, President Tinubu and his team have implemented meaningful changes in our country over the past two years, positioning us on the path of prosperity.’’

He argued that Tinubu’s administration had achieved significant progress within two years, citing increased foreign reserves, growth in the stock market, harmonisation of the exchange rate, and four consecutive months of inflation decline.

“Phenomenal wealth creation in the stock market has seen ASI skyrocket from 53,000 points to over 140,000 points. Over N26 trillion in additional wealth has been created in the market under Tinubu’s watch,” he said.

Onanuga also pointed to reforms in education and social welfare, including student loans through NELFUND and cash transfers to vulnerable households.

He added that states and local governments were receiving more funds from the centre, enabling them to embark on capital projects and create jobs.

“The governors said they have never had it so good,” he noted, insisting that those behind the alleged plot were acting out of desperation.

He wrote further: “Yet, these power-hungry politicians want the President, who has achieved so much, to be removed, all because they have become politically displaced and irrelevant. May they never succeed in their plot against our nation and people.’’

The presidential spokesman said El-Rufai’s past comments would be used against him during political campaigns.

“Please save the video. We shall confront Nasir with it when electioneering starts,” Onanuga noted..

Long-serving Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has completed a move to Fenerbahce in Turkey

0

Long-serving Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has completed a move to Fenerbahce in Turkey, the Premier League club said Tuesday, ahead of the anticipated arrival of Italian international Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Donnarumma is reportedly set to sign for Pep Guardiola’s side for 35 million euros (£30 million, $41 million) after being told he was surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain despite being pivotal in their winning the Champions League last term.

City also brought in Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford in the close season and he has started each of their three league matches so far, but the Englishman has failed to convince.

Donnarumma’s imminent arrival allowed Brazilian international Ederson to make the switch to Turkey, ending a trophy-laden stay in Manchester that began in 2017.

City called Ederson “one of the most successful players in the club’s history”.

With his superb distribution, Ederson was instrumental to Guardiola’s possession-based philosophy, but there were growing doubts last season about his shot-stopping.

“You helped us make history,” City wrote on social media on Tuesday, with pictures of Ederson celebrating a slew of titles including the Champions League in 2023.

Ederson also won six Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

“I arrived in Manchester eight years ago full of hope, but I could not have predicted such a beautiful time together,” said Ederson, who made 372 appearances across all competitions for City.

He kept 122 clean sheets in 276 league appearances.

“Playing for City has been the most special time of my life and I will always be a fan of this special club,” he added.

“I’m going with my wife and children, but I’m leaving a big family here.”

Alexander Isak was on the brink of a British-record £125 million ($169 million) move to Liverpool from Newcastle

0

Alexander Isak was on the brink of a British-record £125 million ($169 million) move to Liverpool from Newcastle on Monday on a frantic final day of the Premier League transfer window.

The Swedish striker is understood to have arrived at Liverpool’s training ground on Monday as a protracted saga neared its end.

With the Premier League window due to shut at 1800 GMT, there were a number of big deals yet to be done as clubs scramble to strengthen.

Sky Sports reported that Newcastle had agreed a deal to sign Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, while Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was set for a move to Manchester City after being told he was surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain.

Struggling Manchester United were understood to have agreed a deal to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for an initial 21 million euros (£18 million, $24.6 million) as they seek to address their goalkeeping problems.

But most eyes will be on the expected finalising of Isak’s move to Liverpool.

The 25-year-old has made clear his desire to leave Newcastle even though he has three years remaining on his contract.

The Anfield club had a £110 million offer for the forward rejected last month and since then he has not trained with or played for Newcastle.

Isak is set to become Liverpool’s eighth first-team signing of the summer window, and his purchase marks the second time that they have broken their own transfer record following the capture of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial fee of £100 million.

Arne Slot’s side, who beat Arsenal 1-0 on Sunday to maintain their perfect Premier League record this season, are also reported to have agreed a £35 million deal to sign Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi.

Once the Isak and Guehi deals are completed, Liverpool’s summer spending will reach an eye-watering figure of around £450 million, although there have also been significant departures including Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Newcastle last week signed German international striker Nick Woltemade for a club-record fee reported to be worth up to £69 million.

That paved the way for the potential departure of Isak, who scored 27 goals for Eddie Howe’s team in all competitions last season.

The Magpies will have further strengthened their attack with the arrival of Wissa, who on Sunday urged Brentford to “keep their word” and allow him to leave.

Now it appears that the DR Congo forward, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season, has his wish, giving Saudi-owned Newcastle extra firepower as they prepare for their Champions League campaign.

Nigerian doctors warn of an imminent nationwide strike

0

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has issued a fresh 10-day ultimatum to the federal government and other relevant authorities, warning of an imminent nationwide strike if its outstanding demands are not addressed.

The resolution was contained in a communiqué signed by NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara; General Secretary, Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku; and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Omoha Amobi, following an Extraordinary National Executive Council, E-NEC meeting held virtually on Sunday.

The association recalled that it had earlier given a three-week ultimatum in July, before extending the deadline by another three weeks to allow for further dialogue with stakeholders. However, it expressed disappointment that the government has yet to fulfil its promises.

According to NARD, many resident doctors are still unpaid for their 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF). It also decried the failure to settle five months’ arrears from the 25–35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, CONMESS, review, along with other longstanding salary arrears.

The doctors further condemned the non-payment of the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance, as well as what they described as the “unjust downgrading” of membership certificates of the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). They also faulted the persistent delay in issuing certificates to successful candidates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, NPMCN.

On state-level issues, NARD criticised the Kaduna State Government for failing to honour agreements with members at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, despite signed Memoranda of Understanding. It also accused the Oyo State Government of neglecting the welfare concerns of doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomosho, where an indefinite strike is ongoing.

While commending states that have paid the 2025 MRTF, the E-NEC demanded immediate action from the Federal Government and state governors.

Among its key demands are immediate payment of the 2025 MRTF to all eligible resident doctors; Settlement of outstanding five months’ arrears of CONMESS and other salary backlogs; Payment of the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance and commencement of specialist allowance payments to all doctors.

Others are the restoration of recognition for the West African postgraduate membership certificates by the MDCN, prompt issuance of membership certificates by the NPMCN and implementation of the 2024 CONMESS in Kaduna State andresolution of welfare concerns in Oyo State.

The communiqué stressed that all state governors must prioritise the welfare of doctors to curb emigration and ensure industrial harmony in the health sector.

“The E-NEC extends the ultimatum by a final 10 days to all relevant government agencies to meet these demands. Failure to do so by Wednesday, September 10, 2025, will leave us with no option but to embark on a nationwide strike,” the association warned.

Jonathan is getting ready for 2027 elections with the latest statement just issued

0

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticised Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo (SAN), and legal scholar, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, for opposing his speculated 2027 presidential ambition, warning them to stay away from his political decisions.

Keyamo and Odinkalu had urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to hand its ticket to Jonathan, arguing that his return bid would face legal obstacles since he had already been sworn in twice as president.

But in a statement issued on Monday by his brother, Azibaola Robert, Jonathan dismissed their concerns, stressing that his eligibility was not in doubt and that he did not need unsolicited advice.

Robert, writing on his verified Facebook page, said: “Dear Festus Keyamo (SAN), Chidi Odinkalu (Prof.), I greet both of you. For the records, three of us are lawyers. We were all pro-democracy activists in the 90s, and I was a better activist than both of you combined.

“Rule No. 1: Do not offer legal advice where none is solicited. GEJ (PDP) has numerous, more cerebral, more experienced SANs at his disposal who give him sound, unblemished professional legal advice.

“Please note: GEJ is 100% constitutionally and legally qualified to contest, if he chooses to. If he decides not to yield to the overwhelming calls to run, it will not be because he is unqualified.

“Your unsolicited legal view is not of any concern to him and will never be. Don’t waste your precious time dwelling on this.

“Or should I schedule a meeting so you can be properly educated on the subsisting court judgments on the matter — one of which your party, APC, was a party to?

Robert added, in a lighter tone: “This is not a confirmation that GEJ is running, though.”

Social Media Influencer, Reno Omokri, has come under public criticism after his first wife, Tuokpe Onuwaje, accused him of neglecting their son

0

A social media influencer and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has come under public criticism after his first wife, Tuokpe Onuwaje, accused him of neglecting their son with special needs.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Onuwaje alleged that Omokri had not seen nor spent meaningful time with their son since June 2024 — over a year ago.

She said the boy, who requires extra care and attention, had been left waiting for his father to create real bonding moments rather than what she described as “fleeting visits” given to his other children.

Onuwaje said Reno’s son has been waiting for him — not just for staged photos or quick visits, but for consistent presence and involvement.

She said parenting is about being there for his children in the little everyday moments that matter, not for social media validation.

She urged Omokri to put aside his busy public life and focus on being a constant figure in the life of his child.

She said, “Stop showing up just for photo ops — show up for real life. Our son with special needs is waiting for quality time with his dad, not just the fleeting visits you do with his siblings. You haven’t seen nor spent time with your son since June 2024! Over a year!

“Prioritise meaningful moments over social media validation. Be present, be involved, and be a constant in your children’s lives.

Real parenting happens in the everyday moments, not just in staged photos. Put down the camera,” she added.

UK removes over 100 job roles from foreign recruitment to curb migration – Complete list

0

The British government has unveiled major immigration reforms, blocking foreign workers from filling more than 100 job categories in a move aimed at reducing net migration.

The Home Office, in a statement posted on X Saturday morning, said the decision was geared towards creating more opportunities for local citizens while restructuring the visa regime.

“Cutting net migration means getting the fundamentals right.

“More than 100 occupations are no longer eligible for overseas recruitment – opening up more jobs for British workers. A fairer, skills-focused system is now taking shape,” the Home Office stated.

This policy marks the latest immigration clampdown under Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who assumed office on July 5, 2024, after Labour’s sweeping election win that ended Rishi Sunak’s tenure.

However, the measure has drawn criticism, with opponents warning it could deepen staffing shortages in critical sectors such as healthcare and social services.

Included in the list are delivery operatives, beauticians, hairdressers, air traffic control assistants, army officers, and construction operatives, among others. See the full list HERE.

Bayer Leverkusen have sacked manager Erik Ten Hag after just two Bundesliga matches in charge

0

Bayer Leverkusen have sacked manager Erik Ten Hag after just two Bundesliga matches in charge, the club announced on Monday.

Fired by Manchester United last October, Ten Hag joined Leverkusen as the successor to Xabi Alonso, who moved to Real Madrid.

“This decision was not easy for us. Nobody wanted to take this step,” sporting director Simon Rolfes said in a statement.

“The past few weeks have shown that the steps to build a new and successful team have not been effective,” Rolfes said.

Club CEO Fernando Carro said the decision was “painful, but necessary”.

The sacking means the 55-year-old Dutchman now has the unwanted record of being the coach to be fired so early into a Bundesliga season, breaking the previous mark of five matches.

Named United manager in July 2022, Ten Hag won the FA and League Cups but was let go after a run of just one win in eight matches midway through the 2024-25 season, the club’s worst start to a campaign in the Premier League era.

Taking over after the most successful period in Leverkusen’s history, with an unbeaten league and cup double in 2023-24, including the first Bundesliga title in the club’s 120-year history, Ten Hag was tasked with overseeing a dramatic rebuild.

Leverkusen lost several core members of the team this summer, including Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong, Amine Adli, and Lukas Hradecky.

The club did not name a replacement for Ten Hag, saying the “training work would be taken over by the assistant coaching staff for the time being”.

Named Leverkusen manager on July 1, Ten Hag’s first match in charge was a 5-1 drubbing by Flamengo’s under-20s team in a friendly in Brazil.

After a 4-0 win over fourth-tier Sonnenhof Grossaspach in their German Cup opener, Leverkusen claimed one point from their first two Bundesliga fixtures.

Leverkusen let a one-goal lead slip to lose 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim and on Saturday conceded two late goals against a 10-man Werder Bremen to draw 3-3, having led 2-0 and 3-1.

On Sunday, German outlets Bild and Kicker both reported Ten Hag was facing the sack, despite his short tenure at the club.

Ten Hag was tasked with bedding in more than a dozen new signings ahead of this season, including several young players.

The three most expensive signings in the club’s history — Malik Tilmann, Jarell Quansah, and Eliesse Ben Seghir — all arrived this summer, for a combined cost of 102 million euros ($120 million) plus bonuses.

Nasir El-Rufai’s remarks on Southern Kaduna are divisive, says CAN

0

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, Reverend John Joseph Hayab, has faulted comments made by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on the population of Southern Kaduna.

El-Rufai, while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, claimed that the people of Southern Kaduna account for less than 25 percent of the state’s population, adding that he had no regrets over his actions and policies toward the region during his eight years in office.

Reacting in Kaduna, Reverend Hayab, who also served as Kaduna State CAN Chairman during El-Rufai’s administration, described the former governor’s remarks as “dangerous and divisive,” stressing that they reflected long-standing tensions between the former governor and communities in the area.

He recalled that during a previous national census exercise, the figures from Southern Kaduna were so significant. This, he said, underscored the numerical strength of the region’s population.

According to Hayab, Southern Kaduna families are typically large, with some households having as many as 15 to 23 children. He argued that this reality demonstrates the community’s strong population base and cannot be dismissed.

The CAN leader also alleged that what often distorts population statistics in the state is not the lack of people in Southern Kaduna but rather the alleged manipulation of figures in other parts of the state.

Expressing disappointment, Hayab said it was worrisome that El-Rufai could publicly state that he had no regrets over policies that affected Southern Kaduna communities. He maintained that such remarks do not promote reconciliation and inclusivity.

On El-Rufai’s claim that only those who do not know him describe him as a fundamentalist, Reverend Hayab disagreed, saying his views were informed by personal experience of the former governor’s leadership style during his tenure.

He contrasted the relative peace currently being enjoyed in Kaduna State with the tensions experienced under the previous administration, adding that the stability witnessed today should be nurtured to strengthen unity across communities.

Hayab further called for future census exercises to include religion and ethnicity as variables, saying this would help prevent distortions and ensure fairness in demographic planning.

He urged Nigerians to reject divisive narratives and work towards justice, equity, and inclusiveness in both politics and governance, insisting that national unity can only be sustained when every group is accorded dignity and fairness.

Finland has sentenced Simon Ekpa to six years in prison on terrorism charges

0

The Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland has sentenced Simon Ekpa to six years in prison on terrorism charges, the BBC reports.

According to the court decision, Ekpa was found guilty of inciting terrorism in Nigeria.

He was also said to have promoted the independence of the Biafra region through illegal means between 2021 and 2024.

Other accusations included aggravated tax fraud and violations of the Lawyers Act.

In May, the trial of Simon Ekpa over alleged terrorism commenced in Finland.

He was accused of participating in a terrorist organisation and publicly inciting crimes for terrorist purposes.

It is worth recalling that the Finnish police investigated the case in collaboration with Nigerian authorities. Ekpa appeared before the Päijät-Häme District Court.

According to prosecutors, he has been actively involved in a separatist movement seeking independence for southeastern Nigeria under the name “Biafra.”

They allege that the activity, conducted online and coordinated from Finland, may constitute terrorism under Finnish law.

Prosecutors demanded a six-year prison sentence for Ekpa.

“We have a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity and communications,” said state prosecutor Sampsa Hakala.

At the pre-trial hearing, Ekpa’s lawyer, Kaarle Gummerus, raised concerns about the reliability of information coming from Nigeria.

Earlier in May, SaharaReporters reported that Finland’s National Prosecution Authority charged Nigerian Biafran agitator Simon Ekpa with inciting terrorism online.

The Prosecution Authority, in a statement, accused Ekpa, who is also a Finnish citizen, of “public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and participation in the activities of a terrorist group,” according to AFP.

The prosecutors stated that Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, committed the offense in Lahti, a city in southern Finland, between 2021 and 2024.

AFP reported that while Finnish authorities did not name the individual in the official statement, a Finnish public broadcaster, YLE, confirmed the suspect as Ekpa — a dual Finnish-Nigerian national who has drawn international attention for his outspoken campaign to establish an independent Biafra state in southeastern Nigeria.

Ekpa was arrested and detained by Finnish police in November 2024.

According to the Prosecution Authority, he has remained in custody and denied all charges. The prosecution alleges that Ekpa’s online activities incited acts of violence in Nigeria under the guise of pro-Biafra agitation.

The charges stemmed from his prominent role in a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group proscribed as a terrorist organisation in 2017 by the former President Muhammadu Buhari-led Nigerian government.

IPOB has long pushed for the secession of the Igbo-dominated southeastern region of Nigeria, which was the centre of a brutal civil war from 1967 to 1970, resulting in over a million deaths.

Finnish authorities also investigated potential financial support for Ekpa’s activities. Following his arrest in 2024, police requested the detention of four individuals suspected of financing his operations. However, the Prosecution Authority confirmed that the charges against those individuals had been dropped due to insufficient evidence.

The incident was confirmed on Sunday by the command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Joshua Ukandu, in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
