President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday sacked the project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) coordinator, Ferdinand Giadom, and replaced him with Nanibarini Zabbey almost five days after the groundbreaking ceremonies for the construction of the centre of excellence for environmental restoration, the Ogoni power project, and 100-bed specialist hospital.

This comes less than two weeks after NewswireNGR exposed HYPREP’s slow pace in providing drinking water for the Ogoni people as recommended by UNEP.

The investigation also revealed that Shell had provided a total of $572 million from 2018 to 2022 to restore the lands the company polluted between 2008 to 2009.

On the government-verified Twitter page, Buhari noted that the “Power Project” will help to sustain other HYPREP’s ongoing projects, such as the Livelihood programme, centre of excellence for environmental restoration, among others in the Ogoniland.

Court adjourns ex-JAMB registrar, Ojerinde’s trial until June 20

A Federal High Court, Abuja on Thursday, adjourned the trial of former Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Dibu Ojerinde, until June 20.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu adjourned the matter to enable the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) put its house in order on other witnesses lined up for the case.

The development followed an oral application for an adjournment by ICPC’s counsel, Ebenezer Shogunle.

Upon resumed hearing in the matter, Ojerinde’s lawyer, Eteya Ogana, told the court that a motion had been filed challenging the re-arrest of ex-JAMB boss and seeking the court order for his release.

He alleged that his client was re-arrested by the anti-corruption commission without an arrest warrant.

However, the judge could not find the process in the court record.

Ogana later admitted that the mistake emanated from them.

He said we erroneously used a wrong charge number in filing the motion.

The lawyer said instead of putting charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/97/21 in the application, they erroneously wrote FHC/ABJ/CR/74/21, leading to a mixup in the filing.

Responding, Shogunle said even if the application was in the court file, it had been overtaken by event.

Besides, he said there was another application filed by the defendant seeking for his release before a sister judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, where Ojerinde is also standing trial alongside his children.

“I think we should wait for that decision,” he said.

Contrary to Ogana’s submission, the ICPC lawyer insisted that the commission had a warrant to effect Ojerinde’s re-arrest.

“I will want my lord to inspect that warrant leading to his re-arrest,” he said.

Shogunle, therefore, sought an adjournment to enable the commission to assemble its witnesses for the trial.

He hinted that three witnesses were remaining to testify before the court.

According to a report by NAN, the ICPC had, on July 8, 2021, arraigned the former JAMB registrar on an 18-count charge bordering on the diversion of public funds to the tune of N5 billion.

He was said to have committed the offence during his tenure as registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO) and JAMB.

Ojerinde, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was later admitted to bail in the sum of N200 million.

But the ICPC operatives, on Jan  26, re-arrested him within the court premises shortly after the hearing.

His re-arrest was connected to fresh facts emerging from his ongoing trial and made by the 4th prosecution witness, the late Olabisi.

NAFDAC, says it has prohibited the promotion and sales of Breastmilk substitutes

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, says it has prohibited the promotion and sales of Breastmilk substitutes, BMS, in health facilities.

Rahila Maishanu, BMS Desk Officer, NAFDAC, Kaduna Office stated this in Zaria, at a one-day training of health workers on the BMS Code and its compliance.

The Training was organised by the state Primary Health Care Board in collaboration with NAFDAC and supported by a global nutrition initiative, Alive & Thrive, under its Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition programme.

Maishanu said that the prohibition was in line with the International Code for Marketing of BMS adopted by the World Health Assembly in 1981 to promote protect and support optimal breastfeeding practices.

She described breastfeeding as a “high impact, low technology, cost-effective” intervention for child survival and optimal cognitive development and sustainability.

She said however, that sadly that the practice was still very low with a national average for early initiation of breastfeeding at 23 per cent, while Kaduna state was at 13 per cent.

She added that the national average for exclusive breastfeeding stood at 34.4 per cent with Kaduna State a little bit higher at 41 per cent.

She attributed part of the problem to the aggressive marketing and promotion of BMS among mothers in communities including health facilities.

The desk officer said that the BMS Code and National Regulation among other things, prohibited the promotion of BMS and related products, including the distribution of free or low-cost supplies in health facilities.

“It also prohibits the advertisement of BMS and related products such as feeding bottles, cereals, teats, pacifiers, breast bump, juice, and baby teas among others to the public or at health facilities.

“The Code equally prohibits the provision of samples of any milk or infant formula marketed for feeding infants and young children and related products to pregnant women, new mothers, or their families.

“There shall be no company sales representatives to advise mothers or provide gifts or personal samples to health workers.

“No healthcare facility shall allow manufacturers or distributors of the BMS to use their facilities for commercial events, contests, or campaigns among other prohibitions,” she said.

She said that NAFDAC was empowered by law to implement, monitor, and enforce the provision of the International Code of Marketing BMS, under the provisions of the NAFDAC Act Cap N1 LFN 2004.

She said that the BMS Code served as a weapon to protect breastfeeding from the negative impact of aggressive advertising and marketing techniques by infant food manufacturers on breastfeeding practices.

Maishanu said that the Code was developed as a global public health strategy to protect breastfeeding mothers from the aggressive marketing of baby foods and ensure safe feeding and better nutrition for babies.

“The implementation and enforcement of the Code is aimed at protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding, by ensuring appropriate marketing and distribution of BMS.

“The aim is to contribute to the provision of safe and adequate nutrition for infants, by the protection and promotion of optimal Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) for child survival, growth, and development.

“It was also to protect breastfeeding from the inappropriate marketing practices of Infant food manufacturers and distributors and to build the confidence of mothers to adopt best IYCF practices.

“It also ensures the proper use of breastmilk substitutes, when necessary, by providing adequate information and through appropriate marketing and distribution,” she said.

She stressed the need for the health workers to arm themselves with knowledge about the code and the national regulation to be able to do what was best for the children.

Dangote, MTN foundations offer each Sudan returnee N100,000 stipend, N25,000 airtime, data

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Sadiya Umar-Farouq has announced the donation of a N100,000 stipend to each of the Sudan returnees by Dangote Foundation.

Speaking while receiving the first batch of 376 Nigerians trapped in war-torn Sudan at the Abuja airport, the minister also disclosed that MTN Foundation donated 25GB data and recharge cards worth N25,000 to each of the returnees.

According to her, the N100,000 stipend donated by Dangote Foundation was for the returnees to use as transport fare to travel to their various destinations with ease.

Also speaking, the Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohammad Yusuf, said the situation in Sudan would soon be under control.

Mr Yusuf expressed happiness that Nigeria was able to evacuate its citizens safe.

The envoy, who described Sudan as the second country to many Nigerians, said normalcy would be restored in the war-ravaged country soon.

The Director-General, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed, said that four more flights conveying Nigerians from Sudan are expected in Nigeria on Thursday.

“The situation in Sudan is real and terrible but we pray peace returns to that country. I am happy our people have started coming back.

“We are expecting about four flights tomorrow – three from Port Sudan and one from Aswan. So it is a process that has started and the tempo will keep on increasing.

“This is something that nobody expected and so we had to swing into action immediately. To get out of Sudan, we had to pay, to take our people to any other part, but we thank God that we are able to bring them back,” he said.

He assured the returnees that the remaining evacuees waiting to be transported back home would soon arrive.

Some of the evacuees who spoke to NAN expressed mixed feelings over the situation in Sudan.

Ibrahim Musa, a student who lived on the outskirts of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, said he was devastated when he first heard the sound of gunshots and grenade explosions.

“The first thing that came to my mind was to escape and I thank God this is where I am now – home,” he said.

Another evacuee, Faith Stephen, a pregnant woman, said she would go back to Sudan once the situation in that country stabilised.

Stephen said that she and her husband had invested so much in Sudan and were engaged in a thriving joint business.
