Abuja employee in court for allegedly defrauding his employer of N385,000

A 22-year-old sales representative, Abdulkarim Shuaib has been docked at an Upper Area Court Gwagwalada, Abuja for allegedly defrauding his employer of N385,000.

The police charged Shuaib who lives in Sauka village Abuja with a criminal breach of trust and theft by a servant.

The Prosecution Counsel Abdullahi Tanko told the court that Mr Ikenna Orisakwe of Kuje Abuja reported the matter at Iddo Division on May 10.

Tanko said the complainant employed the defendant in December 2022 and entrusted his gas refilling business to him to manage.

He said the complainant later discovered that the defendant dishonestly converted the sum of N385,000 to his own personal use.

Davido has said marrying his wife, Chioma, is the best decision he ever made

Nigerian music star, David Adeleke, fondly known as Davido, has said marrying his wife, Chioma, is the best decision he ever made.

The singer got married to his longtime girlfriend, Chioma Rowland, shortly after the death of their son, Ifeanyi.

Ifeanyi drowned in a pool at the music superstar’s residence in Banana Island, Lagos State, in October 2022.

In an interview with Beat 105.3 FM, Atlanta, Davido said he met his wife in his first year at Babcock University.

He said they are a “perfect match,” adding that he has known her for almost 20 years.

“Me and my wife (Chioma) grew up together and went to school together. We met in school. We are just so used to each other. She is like a part of me. You definitely have to get somebody that understands you. Me and my wife, we are just perfect; there is nothing that she does that is crazy. It’s just a good match.

“First year in college, I met her. She is the best decision I have ever made. I have known her like almost 20 years. And she can cook,” he said.

“I can swear I never stole a kobo from the government coffers” – Nasir El-Rufai says

0

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has said he did not steal public funds during his two terms in office.

He said this at the weekend during his final media broadcast as governor.

El-Rufai will hand over to Governor-elect Uba Sani, exactly a week from now.

“I can swear I never stole a kobo from the government coffers,” Governor El-Rufai said in reaction to criticism of his performance in office.

El-Rufai added that the only house he built before he became a governor was the same one he would retire to when his tenure expires on May 29, 2023.

He said, “But those that are the day we took loans, they should look, look at their money on the ground. We didn’t collect this loan and run away to Dubai to buy houses or go to Jabi Road to build a mansion so that we can sleep well, that is not how we are.

“I became governor of Kaduna with only one house on Danja Road at Ungwan Sarki. Now am finishing to the glory of God, that is the only house I have. I didn’t build any mansion, I don’t need it.

“I didn’t steal anybody’s money and I am challenging everyone that governed this state to also come out and swear with the Qur’an that, when they governed the state, they didn’t steal a kobo of Kaduna resource that is not their entitlement.”

How Buhari stopped me from quitting the establishment of the Refinery – Dangote says

President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, on Monday said President Muhammadu Buhari stopped him from quitting the establishment of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals, the world’s largest single-train refinery.

Dangote who disclosed during the commissioning of the project in Lagos, said Buhari’s sustained support and encouragement over the past eight years have been a source of great motivation and strength.

Dangote said the desire to go into the petroleum sector began two decades ago but there were setbacks.

He, however, expressed delight that the project had finally come into fruition.

“Mr. President, Distinguished Guests, the journey to this event was long and arduous. It could not have been possible without the support and collaboration of many parties and individuals.

“So, permit me Your Excellencies, Distinguished Guests to  recognize and appreciate just a few.

“Let me start with Your Excellency, Mr. President. Your sustained support and encouragement over the past eight years have been, for me personally, a source of great motivation and strength.  At times when I felt like giving up, your confidence and quiet words of assurance have made the difference. Mr President, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Dangote also thanked the Lagos State government, starting from the era of President-elect Bola Tinubu, who governed Lagos between 1999 and 2007, till incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“Those like me, who have made Lagos our home will testify that since the beginning of the current democratic dispensation, the government of Lagos State has been exceptionally remarkable in its comitment and support for the private sector.”

“From the tenure of the President Elect, H.E Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who established the Lekki Free Zone, to the incumbent governor H.E Babajide Sanwolu who has been most proactive in ensuring the successful execuion of this project, the State government has indeed demonstartetd great commitment to promoting an investment friendly climate, which made it possible for Our Group to invest over $30billion in various industries in the state economy over that period.

“I would like to express our deep appreciation and gratitude to the Lagos State government and its successive governors for the resolute facilitation of this enabling business environment.”

Top 10 Countries With the Highest Trust in Government

0

Trust according to experts is the public’s belief that the federal system and the politicians who lead or oversee it are “responsive and will do what is right even in the absence of scrutiny.”

Trust is crucial for reasons both conceptual (the legitimacy of well-functioning democracies relies on trust) and practical (government needs to be trusted so it can effectively serve the public).

Below is a list of the top 20 countries with highest percentage of citizen’s trust in government:

1. Switzerland – 83.78%

Switzerland is a semi-direct democratic. The federal legislative power is vested in the two chambers of the Federal Assembly: the National Council and the Council of States.

The Federal Council holds the executive power and is composed of seven power-sharing Federal Councillors elected by the Federal Assembly.

The judicial branch is headed by the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland, whose judges are elected by the Federal Assembly.

Switzerland has a tradition of direct democracy. For any change in the constitution, a referendum is mandatory (mandatory referendum); for any change in a law, a referendum can be requested (optional referendum).

In addition, the people may present a constitutional popular initiative to introduce amendments to the federal constitution.

The people also assume a role similar to the constitutional court, which does not exist, and thus act as the guardian of the rule of law.

Cantonal and municipal politics vary in the different cantons, which may have different systems.

2. Luxembourg – 78.02%

Luxembourg is a parliamentary democracy in the form of a constitutional monarchy. The crown of the Grand Duchy is hereditary in the Nassau-Weilbourg family. Luxembourg also has a distinctive characteristic: it’s the only Grand Duchy in the world.

In 1919, the revision of the Constitution and the introduction of universal suffrage marked a turning point in the political life of the Grand Duchy. Before this date, the right to vote was subject to a poll tax, in other words a certain amount of tax paid, and restricted to the male population aged 25 and over. After the the revision of 1919, all male and female citizens who had reached the age of 21 were given the right to vote. In 1972, the voting age was reduced to 18.

Luxembourg is a democratic state. Under the Constitution, the nation is the source of sovereign power and the Grand Duke takes the constitutional oath before the representatives of the sovereign nation when acceding to the throne.

The nation exercises its sovereignty indirectly via its representatives, who are elected to the Chambre des députés (Chamber of Deputies), Luxembourg’s parliament.

3. Finland – 77.54%

Finland is a parliamentary Republic under the 1999 Constitution. The Head of State is the President of the Republic and the Government is led by a Prime Minister.

Th nation was formerly considered a semi-presidential parliamentary system, but pursuant to the 1999 constitution and the 2012 constitutional amendments, it is now a full parliamentary democracy.

4. Sweden – 68.79%

Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and King Carl XVI Gustaf is Sweden’s non-political head of state.

The monarch has primarily ceremonial and representative duties.

5. Norway – 63.61%

Norway is a monarchy in which the power is divided between three branches: a legislative branch which is also responsible for appropriations, the Storting; an executive branch, the Government; and a judicial branch, the courts.

6. Denmark – 63.54%

7. Ireland – 62.34%

8. Austria – 61.05%

9. Germany – 60.76%

10. Costa Rica – 60.01%

30-year-old pregnant lady arrested for stabbing her. teenage maid

0

A 30-year-old pregnant woman, Eucheria Ndigwe, is currently in the custody of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly stabbing her teenage maid, Chinaze Aneme, in Lagos for failing to wash her bag.

Policemen arrested the suspect following a video on the plight of the maid recorded by one of her neighbours which went viral over the weekend.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a message he posted on his Twitter handle, @BenHundeyin, on Sunday.

Hundeyin disclosed that because of her condition, the suspect had been moved to the command’s gender unit where she would get adequate medical attention while the investigation continues.

He said the victim was also receiving medical attention at the police hospital.

He wrote, “The suspect, Eucheria Ndigwe, aged 30 was arrested yesterday. Due to the fact that she is heavily pregnant, she has been moved to our recently-upgraded gender unit, where in conjunction with @Lagosdsva, she will get adequate medical attention while the investigation progresses.

“The survivor is currently getting adequate medical care @medical_police facility, Ikeja.

“@LagosPoliceNG remains committed to combating domestic, sexual and gender-based violence across the state.”

In the viral video seen by our correspondent on Saturday, a neighbour was heard interrogating the girl on the reason she was shouting in the morning.

“My name is Chinaza Aneme from Anambra State. My auntie pierced me with a knife because I did not wash (her) bag,” Aneme replied to the neighbour who had asked her for her name and where she hailed from.

The man, who referred to himself as a concerned neighbour, described the actions of the woman and her husband as “appalling.”

Election Petition: Peter Obi didn’t ask court for 7 weeks to present witnesses — LP

0

Labour Party (LP) has denied viral reports that it asked the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal to give it seven weeks to produce witnesses.

According to the Head, Obi-Datti Media, Diran Onifade in a statement on Sunday, “Peter Obi did not ask the court to give him seven weeks to bring in his witnesses. He only implied he will be through with all 50 of them in seven weeks.”

A newspaper (not NewsWireNGR) had reported “Give me seven weeks to produce witnesses, Obi tells Tribunal”.

Onifade claimed the report “is a misrepresentation of what our Counsel presented yesterday, before the Election Petition Tribunal.”

The statement reads in part; “In proposing his schedule of witnesses, Eme Awa Kalu, SAN leading the team in court, had told the court that Peter Obi and Labour Party would be presenting 50 witnesses and that these 50 witnesses, will require 7 weeks to present their evidence before the Tribunal.

“At no time did the Counsel say that he required ‘Seven weeks to produce witnesses’ as misreported by the Punch.

“The correct interpretation of what our lawyers told the court unambiguously is that the presentation of our witnesses, from start to finish, will take seven weeks.

“We are not asking the court to wait for seven weeks before we bring in the first witness as the Punch story tries to imply.

“It is expected that every media house will assign competent reporters to cover this important case.

“We expect the Punch Newspaper to immediately correct this misrepresentation with the same front page headline with which it was presented to the public.”

Lagos State Government has urged residents to plan their movement in and out of the Lekki-Epe corridor

0

Ahead of the proposed commissioning of the Dangote Refinery by President Muhammadu Buhari on May 22, the Lagos State Government has urged residents to plan their movement in and out of the Lekki-Epe corridor between 8 am and 2 pm.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, issued the alert in a statement on Monday.

Oladeinde noted that the warning became imperative, particularly for regular road users in Lekki-Epe zone, due to high vehicular movement that would be witnessed on the axis as a result of the commissioning.

The commissioner further urged residents to plan their journeys around the axis, in order to forestall avoidable delays in travel time.

The statement added that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other traffic enforcement personnel had been charged to ensure effective management and control of traffic.

Additionally, it urged motorists to cooperate with the agencies for a seamless flow of traffic.

Justice Haruna Tsammani dismisses application for live coverage of court proceedings

0

The Chairman of the Presidential Election Petition Court, Justice Haruna Tsammani, has dismissed the application for live coverage of court proceedings.

At the 2023 Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) sitting in Abuja on Monday, the justice said the application by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) lacked merit.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, had filed an application on May 8 for an order to allow the live coverage of the daily court proceedings on the case they brought against the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, following the February 25 election.

The Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, followed suit with a similar application asking that proceedings of the tribunal be televised.
