JAMB Extends Closing Date For Sale Of Computer Based Application Test

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has extended the closing date for the sale of application documents for the Computer Based Test, CBT, to Monday, 31st March, 2014.

In a statement that was issued Thursday by JAMB and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Fabian Benjamin in Abuja.

He said the extension would give assess for more candidates desirous of tertiary education who could not register for the Paper Pencil Test (PPT) mode. This is also to ensure that every Nigerian is given equal educational opportunity.

According to the statement, “The Board wishes to state that it would shut its site after the expiration of this new date to allow for proper logistics and planning in preparation for the 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on Computer Based Test mode scheduled to begin from May 17.

“Candidates are therefore advised to avail themselves of this opportunity the extension has provided”.

Factory Workers Getting Sick From Chemicals Used To Make Your iPhone

0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple’s labor practices are under attack by two activist groups who contend the company makes its iPhones with a hazardous mix of chemicals that threaten the health of factory workers assembling the devices in China.

The campaign began Wednesday with an online petition put together by China Labor Watch, a longtime Apple critic, and Green America, an environmental protection group.

If enough consumers sign the “Bad Apple” petition, the two groups hope to pressure the company into abandoning the use of two chemicals, benzene and n-hexane, in the production of the iPhone, Apple’s top-selling product.

Benzene is a carcinogen that can cause leukemia if not handled properly and n-hexane has been linked to nerve damage.

In a statement, Apple pointed out that it has already stopped using many hazardous chemicals, including PVC plastic and brominated flame, during the past few years to the acclaim of environmental groups such as Greenpeace. The Cupertino, Calif. company also says it ensures all remaining toxic substances comply with U.S. safety standards.

“Last year, we conducted nearly 200 factory inspections which focused on hazardous chemicals, to make sure those facilities meet our strict standards,” Apple said.

The protesting groups believe Apple’s factory inspections and publicly released reports about the findings have been whitewashing the real working conditions. They say they suspect many of the estimated 1.5 million workers in overseas factories hired by Apple are still logging grueling hours and, in some cases, being exposed to dangerous materials without proper training.

“Apple touts itself as a socially responsible leader in the tech industry, but to really be a leader, Apple must put a stop to worker poisoning and ensure sick workers are receiving treatment,” said Elizabeth O’Connell, Green America’s campaign director.

Coming up with a safer manufacturing recipe for the iPhone would cost less than $1 per device, O’Connell estimated. That’s a pittance for a company that earned $37 billion during its last fiscal year.

Neither benzene nor n-hexane is unique to Apple’s manufacturing process. They are also used in the production of electronics products sold by other large technology companies who have also been criticized for their practices. For instance, last year a South Korean court raised doubts about Samsung Electronics’ claims that the benzene levels in its computer chip factories were safe. The court ruled Samsung hadn’t fully examined the health risk in its chip factories after a 29-year-old worker died of leukemia in 2009.

Low levels of benzene are also found in gasoline, cigarettes, paints, glues and detergents.

Apple’s size and success make it an inviting target for groups seeking to draw attention to their causes and perhaps spur changes that are eventually adopted by other companies. Apple boasts a market value of about $480 billion, higher than any other publicly traded company. And the iPhone remains a cultural phenomenon with more than 470 million of the devices sold since the release of the first model nearly seven years ago.

China Labor Watch has been especially harsh in its criticism of Apple, maintaining that the conditions in its manufacturing contractors’ factories are so oppressive that workers are driven to suicide.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, though, has steadfastly maintained that the company’s high standards have led to better treatment of the factory workers and reduced suppliers’ reliance on dangerous substances.

“Since Tim Cook took the helm, Apple’s increased transparency and accountability back down the supply chain has significantly improved, and is quickly becoming a hallmark of his leadership at the company,” Tom Dowdall, a Greenpeace energy campaigner, wrote in a blog post last month.

Theodore Orji: Jonathan, A Success Story For South East Nigeria

“We want to put it on record that the commencement of work on the second Niger bridge is just one of the many benefits the Federal Government is conferring on our Region at this time.”

Today, we witness the making of history, and a promise being fulfilled to the people of the South-East Geopolitical Region, as our dear President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR – flags-off the commencement of construction-work on the second Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State. Our people sincerely welcome Mr. President and his entourage on this historic occasion.

The Niger Bridge is an important GATEWAY TO Onitsha and other commercial cities in the South-East Region and for several years the first bridge has borne the heavy traffic-flow that pass through the bridge as a result of the increasing commercial activities in our region, which has continued to contribute immensely to the economy of this Nation. This wear and tear on the first bridge has necessitated the urgent cries of our people for a second bridge; and for many years our people have put this demand on the front seat of our priority demands from the Federal Government.

Mr. President promised to attend to our request, and true to your promise to our people, you are here to flag-off the construction of this second bridge across the Niger. The entire people of the South-East Region are grateful for your magnanimity, and assure you of our cooperation and supports at all times.

We want to put it on record that the commencement of work on the second Niger bridge is just one of the many benefits the Federal Government is conferring on our Region at this time. We are currently witnessing the on-going work at the Enugu-Umuahia-Port Harcourt Expressway, and the declaration of a state of emergency on the restoration of all federal roads in the South-East Region by the Honourable Minister for Works, Mike Onolomemen.

We urge the Federal Government to concentrate on these projects to ensure their completion before 2015, so as to deepen the special positions they have on the hearts of Ndi-Igbo, who have resolved on their own to support Mr President if he decides to run for re-election in 2015.

The South-East Region and Ndigbo believe that Mr. President means well for Nigerians and our people. You have enthroned equity in the Nigerian political system and given hope that all marginalized groups in the Nation, can find anchor and realization of their interests within a United and equitable Nigeria. That is why our region will do whatever it takes to work closely with you, so that equity, fairness and parity is achieved in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Today, as you have shown in many occasions, you have again demonstrated that you are one President of the Nation, a change agent of transformation – that keeps your promise to the marginalized and the entire Nation. And as you flag-off the construction of this second Niger Bridge, our region is already counting on the blessings of accelerated economic benefits, and see new reasons to believe in you and the successful completion of this project in no distant date.

I want to thank you once more for the event of today, for keeping your promise to the people of the South-East Region, and for the hope you bring to the lives of many Nigerians that this Nation will remain a land of opportunities for every citizen.

May God bless you for all you have been doing.

Thank you.

The Speech was presented by Governor Theodore Orji of Abia on March 10 at the flag-off ceremony of the Second Niger Bridge by President Goodluck Jonathan

Cattle Rustlers Attack Katsina Communities, 103 Feared killed

Scores of gunmen, believed to be cattle rustlers, have attacked villages in Katsina State killing about 103 people, residents have told PREMIUM TIMES.

Residents said about 100 armed men on motorcycles on Tuesday and Wednesday evening invaded Kurar Mota, Marabar Maigora, Sabon Layin Galadima, Unguwar Doka, and Maigora, all in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State.

A witness who narrowly escaped and later returned to his village told PREMIUM TIMES on Thursday morning that he attended the burial of 27 people in his hometown, Maigora. He said he later attended the burial of another 21 people at Sabon Layin Galadima; while 40 people were killed at Marabar Maigora; 7 in Kurar Mota and 8 in Unguwar Doka.

Many of the victims, among them women and children, are believed to have been set ablaze inside their houses. The witness, who did not wasn’t to be named for security reasons, said they believed the attackers were cattle rustlers on a reprisal mission as many of them had been arrested and handed over to the police in recent times.

Efforts to speak to the spokesperson of the Katsina police, Aminu Abubakar, on the current situation in the area and the official casualty figure have been unsuccessful as his telephone number is not reachable; although the BBC Hausa Service quotes a federal lawmaker from the area, Abbas Machika, as saying 67 people were killed in the attack.

Shocking Report: Mysterious Maylasia Plane Flew 4 Hours After Vanishing

0

U.S. investigators suspect that Malaysia Airlines 3786.KU -4.08% Flight 370 stayed in the air for about four hours past the time it reached its last confirmed location, according to two people familiar with the details, raising the possibility that the plane could have flown on for hundreds of additional miles under conditions that remain murky.

Aviation investigators and national security officials believe the plane flew for a total of five hours, based on data automatically downloaded and sent to the ground from the Boeing Co. BA +0.31% 777’s engines as part of a routine maintenance and monitoring program.

That raises a host of new questions and possibilities about what happened aboard the widebody jet carrying 239 people, which vanished from civilian air-traffic control radar over the weekend, about one hour into a flight to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur.

Six days after the mysterious disappearance prompted a massive international air and water search that so far hasn’t produced any results, the investigation appears to be broadening in scope.

U.S. counterterrorism officials are pursuing the possibility that a pilot or someone else on board the plane may have diverted it toward an undisclosed location after intentionally turning off the jetliner’s transponders to avoid radar detection, according to one person tracking the probe.

The investigation remains fluid, and it isn’t clear whether investigators have evidence indicating possible terrorism or sabotage. So far, U.S. national security officials have said that nothing specifically points toward terrorism, though they haven’t ruled it out.

But the huge uncertainty about where the plane was headed, and why it apparently continued flying so long without working transponders, has raised theories among investigators that the aircraft may have been commandeered for a reason that appears unclear to U.S. authorities. Some of those theories have been laid out to national security officials and senior personnel from various U.S. agencies, according to one person familiar with the matter.

At one briefing, according to this person, officials were told investigators are actively pursuing the notion that the plane was diverted “with the intention of using it later for another purpose.”

As of Wednesday it remained unclear whether the plane reached an alternate destination or if it ultimately crashed, potentially hundreds of miles from where an international search effort has been focused.

In those scenarios, neither mechanical problems, pilot mistakes nor some other type of catastrophic incident caused the 250-ton plane to mysteriously vanish from radar.

The latest revelations come as local media reported that Malaysian police visited the home of at least one of the two pilots.

A Malaysia Airlines official declined to comment. A Boeing executive who declined to be named would not comment except to say, “We’ve got to stand back from the front line of the information.”

The engines’ onboard monitoring system is provided by their manufacturer, Rolls-Royce RR.LN -0.80% PLC, and it periodically sends bursts of data about engine health, operations and aircraft movements to facilities on the ground.

“We continue to monitor the situation and to offer Malaysia Airlines our support,” a Rolls-Royce representative said Wednesday, declining further comment.

“The disappearance is officially now an accident and all information about this is strictly handled by investigators,” said a Rolls-Royce executive who declined to be named, citing rules of the International Civil Aviation Organization, a United Nations agency.

As part of its maintenance agreements, Malaysia Airlines transmits its engine data live to Rolls-Royce for analysis. The system compiles data from inside the 777’s two Trent 800 engines and transmits snapshots of performance, as well as the altitude and speed of the jet.

Those snippets are compiled and transmitted in 30-minute increments, said one person familiar with the system. According to Rolls-Royce’s website, the data is processed automatically “so that subtle changes in condition from one flight to another can be detected.”

The engine data is being analyzed to help determine the flight path of the plane after the transponders stopped working. The jet was originally headed for China, and its last verified position was half way across the Gulf of Thailand.

A total flight time of five hours after departing Kuala Lumpur means the Boeing 777 could have continued for an additional distance of about 2,200 nautical miles, reaching points as far as the Indian Ocean, the border of Pakistan or even the Arabian Sea, based on the jet’s cruising speed.

Bayern Munich Boss Sentenced To Jail

A German court convicted Uli Hoeness of tax evasion on Thursday and sentenced the soccer boss who turned Bayern Munich into one of the world’s most successful clubs to three and half years in jail.

Judge Rupert Heindl ruled Hoeness’s voluntary disclosure – that he had failed to pay taxes – was incomplete and thus did not meet a vital requirement needed for amnesty under German tax laws designed to encourage tax evaders to come clean.

Hoeness has admitted evading 27.2 million euros in taxes on income earned in secret Swiss bank accounts but the Bayern Munich commercial manager was hoping for leniency in one of the most closely watched tax evasion cases in German history.

“The voluntary disclosure is not valid with the documents that were presented alone,” said the judge.

Hoeness, 62, bowed his head and stared at the floor when the verdict was delivered, his face turning red.

The case hinged on the question whether Hoeness, who as a player helped West Germany win the 1974 World Cup, fully cooperated with his voluntary disclosure. It shocked the nation and prompted thousands of tax dodgers to turn themselves in.

Prosecutors originally charged Hoeness with evading 3.5 million euros in taxes. But on the first day of the trial Hoeness stunned the court by admitting he had actually evaded five times that amount – or 18.5 million euros.

That figure was raised even further to 27.2 million euros on the second day of the trial when a tax inspector testified that the amount was higher. Hoeness’s defence team acknowledged the higher figure.

Hoeness apologised to the court and pleaded for leniency.

“I deeply regret my wrongdoing,” he said on Monday. “I’m doing everything I can to put this unhappy chapter behind me.”

Tax evasion is a serious crime in Germany. Peter Graf, the late father of tennis champion Steffi Graf, was sentenced in 1997 to three years and nine months for evading 12.3 million marks (6.3 million euros). He was released after 25 months.

Hoeness, once one of Germany’s most admired soccer managers, voluntarily alerted tax authorities in January 2013 about his bank account and undeclared income. He said the Swiss account was a personal account created for financial market trades.

Some 55 000 tax evaders have turned themselves in over the last four years and paid a total of about 3.5 billion euros in back taxes, according to the taxpayers association. The number of voluntary disclosures rose four-fold in 2013 from 2012.

Hoeness had been a friend of Chancellor Angela Merkel and a popular TV talk show guest. He spoke out for higher taxes and railed against tax evasion. His case has led to calls to change German laws that allow tax evaders to avoid prosecution if they turn themselves in before an investigation starts.

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has assured members of the National Youth Service Corps of adequate security irrespective of which state they are posted to for the one year mandatory service.

Recall corps members have been the target of attacks by terrorist and religious fundamentalist. In the aftermath of the 2011 general elections, corpers in Northern Nigeria were killed in hundreds.

The attacks left many Nigerian parents worrying over the welfare of their ward sent to troubled Nigerian states experiencing frequent attacks by Boko Haram Insurgents.

At the swearing-in ceremony of the 2014 Batch A set, The president assured corpers on Thursday at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ede in his address which was read at the swearing in of the corps members deployed to Osun State.

Jonathan said, “On our part as government, we will do everything humanly possible to ensure your safety and welfare during this period of national assignment.”

Idang Alibi: Jonathan, Dame Patience, Wike And Score Keeping

Anyone who has been following the titanic battle for political space and relevance in Rivers State in the past few months between the Abuja Front and the Rivers Front will realize that what exists now in the State is only a fragile peace which has come about following a unilateral truce called by the Abuja Front. The truce is symbolized by the redeployment to the FCT of former Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mbu James Mbu, who has been the arrow head of the battle for supremacy by the Abuja Front. For those who are not fully in the picture of what is going on there and who the combatants are, Abuja Front is represented by the trio of President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, Dame Patience and the Education Minister, Mr. Nyeeson Wike while Governor Rotimi Amaechi is of course the captain and platoon commander of the Rivers Front.
I call what is happening now a fragile peace because the war will resume in a much more fearsome manner and may end on a gruesome note given the sense of anger and indignation of both parties. The truce is only a tactical move to douse the public outcry that has greeted the acts of impunity that were being carried out by the Abuja Front in the war to emasculate, or if possible annihilate, Amaechi and his fighting forces. When the war drums for 2015 are sounded, the battle for the soul of Rivers State and its two million votes will resume in full. And even when that one is fought and won, we will not see an end to the war, depending on who emerges at the Centre as President. If Jonathan wins re-election, then Amaechi and his supporters should prepare for the coming humiliation. The eminent Nyeeson Wike has given us sufficient indication of just that.
He said recently that, ‘’we will arrest Amaechi next year’’, apparently when he will no longer have immunity and nowhere to hide. Since Wike used a royal ‘we’ in that remark and there has been no denial or denunciation from the Presidency, we should take it that the man was speaking for himself, Dame Patience and the President himself. Even if Wike had not voiced out any plan of revenge, it is clear from the President’s body language that he and his team are keeping a record of those they will settle scores with and that Amaechi is number one on that list and should therefore prepare for revenge and persecution immediately he ceases to be governor on May 29, 2015.
And that will be a grave tragedy because President Jonathan and company would be violating one of the greatest commands of God that we should not seek revenge. God resents those who want to engage in self-help by trying to get back at those they feel have hurt them. Revenge seeking is like blasphemy because you think God is not fair enough; not just enough; not strong enough and not wise enough to fight for you. And by so thinking, you diminish the essence of God. You want to become a God for yourself in your own cause and God hates this utterly. And for someone like Jonathan in particular who got that seat on a platter of gold and which showed very unmistakably that he got it by the grace of God, to begin to do or say anything that implies that he will win re-election by the strength of his political wizardry and by the muscle of the office of the presidency, will be very unfortunate indeed. There is something utterly distasteful in a man who has graciously been given an exalted office like that of the president of a country to turn around and use vengeful tactic against his enemies. It greatly diminishes that office and the person of the occupant who does that.
It is debatable but I have always maintained, rightly in my view, that in terms of solid, concrete achievements, former President Olusegun Obasanjo is the greatest leader Nigeria has ever had. No Nigerian leader has ever come near in terms of the solid things Obasanjo has done for Nigeria. Obasanjo, I also want to venture further, has done for Nigeria greater concrete things than the late Dr. Nelson Mandela had done for South Africa. But why did Mandela become a world icon celebrated by all men and women on earth and Obasanjo has not quite achieved such a status? The answer lies in one fact: Obasanjo is a score keeping and vengeful person while Mandela taught the world the virtue of forgiveness. We celebrate Mandela for that spiritual gift to mankind while Obasanjo is suffering for his heart full of unforgiveness. Those who believe in retaliation; who believe that they must prove their superiority over their enemies reduce themselves greatly. It is not a coincidence that today the people who have done the greatest damage to the image of Obasanjo are not those he has used delegated might to crush and humiliate; it is members of his own household: his wives and some of his children; kids he had fathered from his loins. That is a terrible misfortune to befall any man but that is what the man some of us call affectionately Baba has brought upon himself.
Up till today when my mind reviews the image of former Bayelsa Governor DipriyeAlamieyesiegha in handcuff like a dangerous criminal with his two handcuffed hands trying desperately to prevent his trousers which were threatening to fall off from his loins, fills me with revulsion for Obasanjo who I nevertheless regard as a great leader. Obasanjo planned and executed that act of humiliation against Alams for the simple reason that the man was aligning with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar who he considered his number one political enemy at that time.
That is the type of treatment that Jonathan, his wife and Wike are planning for Amaechi. The question I ask people like Wike is that what if God decides that because you are deliberately planning to use the power he will give you to humiliate or persecute people and for that reason he decides not to give it to you again, what is the profit you will gain for keeping and trying to settle scores?
I call on President Jonathan to learn a lesson or two from the fate that has befallen Obasanjo. He should first of all learn to detoxify or purge himself of the Obasanjo in him. He must ask God for grace to forsake the spirit of vengeance which he has demonstrated ample possession of. Contrary to the position of many Nigerians about suspended CBN governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, I feel that he did not behave well in his crusade about the ‘’missing billions’’. Even if billions of dollars of Nigeria’s oil money are missing, the way and manner he went about it is unexpected of a man who occupies the office of CBN governor. Yet the manner he was humiliated and shoved out of office bears mark of a vengeful person who in addition, misuses his powers.
Jonathan rode to power on the banner of humility and self-effacement. The new image of a man of ego who is invested with enormous presidential powers and who is not ready to forgive any slight and who must prove to all that he is the ultimate, does not speak well of him.
