Man demands N1m before granting wife divorce

0

A businessman, Nasiru Yunusa has told an Upper Area Court in Kubwa, FCT, that he will only grant his wife, Aisha Hamisu a divorce if she pays him N1 million.

Yunusa and Hamisu got married according to Islamic laws sometime in 2021 and are blessed with a 13-month-old daughter.

Earlier, Hamisu approached the court seeking the dissolution of her marriage with Yunusa, on grounds of lack of care and respect.

She said that Yunusa packed her belongings from his house to her father’s house on April 19, 2022.

Yunusa, however, said he wanted Hamisu to return to his house but would grant her a divorce if she agreed to compensate him.

” I have spent money on a lawyer for court proceedings which has been going on and all I have spent on her is N1 million which I am ready to prove,” he said.

In response, the plaintiff said that she does not love Yunusa and cannot live with him.

”It is not true that he has spent N1 million on me because I have been with my parents for the past two and a half years after he dumped my property at their doorstep.

“I had our daughter through a cesarean section at Kubwa General Hospital and he did not pay a dime for the hospital bill.

“I am ready to pay him back the dowry of N50,000 only to him, ”she said.

The Judge, Mohammed Wakili, adjourned the matter until Jan 8 for the continuation of hearing.

Herbalist bags 5 years imprisonment over N8m fraud in Ekiti

0

An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday, sentenced a 58-year-old herbalist, Nurudeen Ibrahim, to five years imprisonment with hard labour for fraud.

Ibrahim was arraigned before the court on Aug. 2, 2022, on three three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud, and indecent assault.

Delivering judgment, the Magistrate, Olatomiwa Daramola, said: “I find the defendant not guilty for offence of conspiracy, he is discharged and acquitted.

“However, he is found guilty of the offence of obtaining by false pretences to wit fraud, and convicted accordingly.

“He is hereby sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour, or an option of restitution of the sum of N8 million, being the amount the convict admitted to have obtained from the victim, which the court has found to be under false pretence, in lieu of imprisonment.

“On the Toyota Camry Car, which was found to be proceed of crime, the court is empowered by Section 296 (b) of the Ekiti State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2014, to order that it be applied as part of the sum of N8 million, due to the complainant, and I so hold,” Daramola said.

The prosecutor, Insp Elijah Adejare, had during trial told the court that the convict, and others now at large, committed the offences sometime in September 2019, in Aramoko-Ekiti.

He said that the convict and others now at large conspired to commit felony, by false pretext obtained N10.4 million from the complainant, and indecently assaulted her.

According to him, the offences, contravened Sections 516, 419, and 353 of the Criminal Code Cap C16, Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria, 2012.

He said that the complainant in her testimony before the court, said that she was a businesswoman, based in Lagos, but in September, 2019, when her business suffered some setback, her father invited her home to Aramoko-Ekiti, and introduced her to the herbalist “for assistance.”

“Thereafter, I discovered he had used charm on me; he was collecting my money, on the pretext of finding solution to my problems.

“He sexually assaulted me and slept with me severally. I sold my cars and house among others to the sum of N10.4 million, which he collected from me.

“He also collected some of my personal belongings and gave to his wife. I bought a car for him from the proceeds of my sold properties, with evidence.

” When I became seriously sick, I begged him to please give me part of the money to take care of myself, but he refused, and instead threatened my life if I informed anyone of what had transpired between us,” she said.

To prove his case, Adejare called seven witnesses, and tendered statements of the complainant, her photographs on sick bed, some charms and fetish objects, Toyota Camry car and the defendant’s  statement as exhibits.

The convict gave evidence in his own defence and denied some of the allegations during examination in chief by his counsel, Mr Busuyi Ayorinde.

He, however, admitted to obtaining N8 million from the businesswoman and called one witness to give evidenceon his behalf.

Nigerian doctors seek legislation against organ trafficking

0

The FCT Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has called for legislative action against organ trafficking, to reflect the growing concern within the medical community about the illegal practice.

Dr Charles Ugwuanyi, FCT Chairman of the NMA, made the call at a news conference in Abuja on Monday.

He called for due process, saying through legislative action, Nigeria could take a significant step towards eradicating organ trafficking and protecting the well-being of citizens.

He said that the law governing organ transplants in the country was scanty and limited in depth.

“It only requires the donor to be above 18 years of age and the fact that there is no financial inducement for the donation,” he said.

The chairman said this following an allegation of illegal trade of organs and disregard for due process allegedly involving an Abuja-based medical facility.

Mr Ugwuanyi said that the FCT NMA called for the news conference to enable the public to hear the side story of the Chief Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Proprietor of Alliance Hospital, Abuja, Dr Christopher Otabor, following the allegation.

He said that the news conference was also called to caution the public, especially the vulnerable Nigerians who are often coerced, and deceived into selling their organs.

According to the chairman, the illicit trade not only exploits individuals but also poses significant health risks to both organ donors and recipients.

Mr Ugwuanyi highlighted the urgent need for legislation to combat organ trafficking and protect the welfare of the Nigerian population.

The chairman emphasised the importance of comprehensive laws that criminalise organ trafficking, establish strict penalties for offenders and provide support and rehabilitation for victims.

He further emphasised the need for increased public awareness and education on the dangers and consequences of organ trafficking.

He believed that a multi-sectoral approach involving government agencies, law enforcement, healthcare professionals, and civil society organizations was essential to effectively tackle the issue.

He called on the National Assembly to prioritise the enactment of laws specifically targeting organ trafficking.

He urged lawmakers to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including medical professionals and legal experts, to develop comprehensive legislation that addressed the complexities of the illegal trade.

“It is hoped that by addressing organ trafficking through robust legislation, the country can effectively combat this criminal activity, protect its citizens, and uphold the principles of medical ethics and human rights,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Otabor said it was obvious that there was an organ market out there which Alliance Hospital was not part of and would not condescend to transact in.

He said that a position against the hospital had pronounced a guilty verdict on it and called for punishment for the hospital without due regard to facts.

“I encourage other media houses with genuine intentions to dig deep to unravel the key players in this trade. Alliance Hospital has nothing to do with illegal organ harvesting,” he said.

He also said it was expected that the National Assembly would take the matter seriously and initiate legislative measures to tackle organ trafficking in the country.

He said the involvement of lawmakers and the passing of appropriate laws would send a strong message that organ trafficking would not be tolerated in the country, and those involved would face severe consequences.

NAN recalled that experts said that in Nigeria, kidney recipients sourced for their donors and present them to the hospital for screening on compatibility and fitness for donation.

After the screening, the hospital proceeds to ensure they meet the legal requirements which include donor must be 18 years or above.

Donors must sign consent in the presence of two adult witnesses

Donors are also expected to swear an affidavit stating their age and affirming that the decision to donate was their free will and there are no compulsion or financial inducement.

Did Pope Francis indeed endorse same-sex marriage? Here’s All You Need to Know

0

The approval of same-sex couples by the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has generated lots of reactions across social media.

Many were shocked at the development, while others were confused. If you are confused about the major details of the announcement by the bishop of Rome and sovereign of the Vatican City State, below are all you need to know:

  • The Pope only approved blessings for same-sex couples under some circumstances if the blessings weren’t confused with the ritual of marriage.
  • A letter Francis sent to two conservative cardinals that was published in October reaffirmed that marriage is a lifelong union between a man and a woman.
  • The letter was the Pope’s response to five conservative cardinals who challenged him to affirm church teaching on homosexuality ahead of a big meeting where LGBTQ+ Catholics are on the agenda.
  • The Pope stressed that blessings in question must not be tied to any specific Catholic celebration or religious service and should not be conferred at the same time as a civil union ceremony.
  • The blessings cannot use set rituals or even involve the clothing and gestures that belong in a wedding.
  • Francis’ response to the cardinals, however, marks a reversal from the Vatican’s current official position. In an explanatory note in 2021, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said flat-out that the church couldn’t bless gay unions because “God cannot bless sin.”
  • The radical shift in policy is aimed at making the church more inclusive while maintaining its strict ban on gay marriage

Coups in west Africa, “could snowball into engulfing the entire African continent” – Foreign Affairs, Minister, Yusuf Tuggar

0

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, has expressed fear over the increasing coups in west Africa, saying “it could snowball into engulfing the entire African continent”.

It was contained in a statement sent by Alkasim Abdulkadir, SA Media and Communications Strategy to the minister, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Mr Tuggar expressed concern at the 10th Annual High-level Seminar on the promotion of peace and security in Africa in Algeria, according to the statement.

He warned against describing the unconstitutional change in government in West Africa as solely a regional problem.

He said West Africa was also faced with the challenges of terrorism and other cross-border criminalities.

The seminar had the theme: “Resurgence of unconstitutional changes of governments in Africa: Global outlook, response and implications for the A3.”

It was aimed at assisting African Members of the UN Security Council in preparing to address peace and security issues on the continent.

At the seminar, the minister said it was easy to describe the military take-over in some West African countries as a problem of the region, not looking at the root causes, including the proliferation of arms from the war in Libya and other factors.

According to Mr Tuggar, simply looking at the military take-over as a West African problem, is escapist and a denial of what may lie ahead.

He said: “In examining the root causes of UCG and proffering solutions it is important to consider just not endogenous factors of governance, election processes but also important to consider the exogenous factors.

“Some might look at West Africa and say West Africa must have a problem and that is why it is happening there.”

“West Africa was not responsible for the implosion of Libya that brought out the proliferation of arms.

“West Africa was not responsible for failure of EU’s Sahel Strategy.

“It may not necessarily be responsible for climate change in the Sahel and I can go on and on and on.

“The easier option is to ignore all these things or to wish them away and simply say there is something West Africa is doing wrong and try and accommodate the new military regimes.

“However, that would be fatal for the whole of Africa because we want to get to the issue of fighting terrorism in the entire Africa, in North Africa and other parts.”

Mr Tuggar further stated that “it is easy to think the solution is to accommodate these new military regimes and work with them because they are dear to you and that way you can continue to fight against terrorism but this would not work”.

He, however, advised that the solution would be to bring life into African Union body of programmes because terrorist groups and other criminal gangs edging ways in border areas and West Africa had complex border areas.

He further stressed that issues of territory were difficult to man and manage.

He said the African Union body of programmes bringing about development and infrastructure would be more coercive and more coordinated.

“We don’t give in to this military take-over on pressures from the social media.”

Mr Tuggar led the Nigerian delegation to the seminar.

The seminar was chaired by Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad of the Republic of Gambia.

This was in his capacity as the Chair of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) for the December.

Reactions as Pope Francis approves blessings for same-sex couples

0

The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has approved letting Catholic priests bless same-sex couples, the Vatican announced Monday, a radical shift in policy that aimed at making the church more inclusive while maintaining its strict ban on gay marriage.

The document from the Vatican’s doctrine office elaborates on a letter Francis sent to two conservative cardinals that was published in October.

In that preliminary response, the bishop of Rome and sovereign of the Vatican City State, Francis, suggested such blessings could be offered under some circumstances if the blessings weren’t confused with the ritual of marriage.

The development has however generated mixed reactions across social media. Below are some:

A policeman, Inspector Nelson Abuante, has committed suicide after he mistakenly shot dead a colleague

Inspector Nelson Abuante, a police officer, tragically took his own life after mistakenly shooting and killing his colleague, Inspector Monday Gbaramana, during an attempt to apprehend a suspect in Rivers State.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Nyogor-Lueku, Khana Local Government Area. Both officers, who were assigned to the Taabaa Division, had gone to Nyogor-Lueku to arrest Mr. Akere Akpobari based on allegations made against him by his mother.

However, Akere resisted arrest, resulting in a physical altercation between him and the two inspectors. In the midst of the altercation, Inspector Nelson Abuante accidentally shot Inspector Gbaramana, causing him serious injuries.

Abuante and Akere’s mother attempted to rush the injured officer to the hospital, but their car ran out of fuel on the way.

Tragically, Inspector Monday passed away during this time. Upon realizing that his colleague had died, Abuante took his own life by shooting himself. The bodies of the two officers have been taken to the mortuary for autopsy.

How Tingo Group Inc. lied about having $461.7m in its subsidiary Tingo Mobile’s Nigerian bank

0

The Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States has accused Tingo Group Inc. of providing false information about the amount of money in its Nigerian bank accounts.

Instead of the claimed $461.7 million, the accounts only held $50.

This announcement was made on Monday by the SEC, along with charges against Mmobuosi Banye, also known as Dozy Mmobuosi, and three affiliated US-based entities: Tingo Group Inc., Agri-Fintech Holdings Inc., and Tingo International Holdings Inc. Mmobuosi, the CEO of these entities, is being charged for allegedly engaging in a scheme to manipulate financial performance metrics in order to deceive investors worldwide.

The SEC is seeking immediate action to prevent the defendants from spreading false information and to safeguard corporate and investor assets.

In a statement, SEC said, “The SEC’s complaint, filed on December 18, 2023, alleges that, since at least 2019, Mmobuosi spearheaded a scheme to fabricate financial statements and other documents of the three entities and their Nigerian operating subsidiaries, Tingo Mobile Limited and Tingo Foods PLC. The complaint further alleges that Mmobuosi made and caused the entities to make material misrepresentations about their business operations and financial success in press releases, periodic SEC filings, and other public statements.

“For instance, Tingo Group’s fiscal year 2022 Form 10-K filed in March 2023 reported a cash and cash equivalent balance of $461.7m in its subsidiary Tingo Mobile’s Nigerian bank accounts. In reality, those same bank accounts allegedly had a combined balance of less than $50 as of the end of fiscal year 2022. According to the SEC’s complaint, Defendants also fabricated the customer relationships that formed the basis of their purported businesses.

“The complaint alleges that Mmobuosi and the entities he controls have fraudulently obtained hundreds of millions in money or property through these schemes, and that Mmobuosi has siphoned off funds for his personal benefit, including purchases of luxury cars and travel on private jets, as well as an unsuccessful attempt to acquire an English Football Club Premier League team, among other things.”

According to SEC, its case is filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, and the four defendants are being charged with violating the anti-fraud provisions of the federal securities laws.

The commission added that Mmobuosi was being charged with lying to auditors, insider trading, and failing to file Forms 4 disclosing the sales of millions of Agri-Fintech common stock for which he was the ultimate beneficial owner.

Outrage over fake consumer products across Nigeria

0

Nigerians have expressed their concerns on social media regarding the growing prevalence of counterfeit consumer goods in markets and stores across the country.

The discussion was initiated by a user named @Aimalohi6, who brought attention to a particular soy sauce brand that has recently been flooded with knockoffs. In their tweet, they highlighted the existence of various fake versions of the brand, such as AMOYS, AMOI, AMQY, and AMOY’c, emphasizing that the genuine brand is simply AMOY without any additional letters.

They also expressed their frustration at not knowing where to find the original product, as even reputable stores are selling the counterfeits. This post gained significant attention on Monday, with many consumers sharing pictures of the fake products they had unknowingly purchased from supermarkets.

Additionally, other Twitter users began sharing examples of counterfeit wine brands, non-alcoholic beverages, chocolates, toothpaste, soap, milk, and various other household goods. Netizens are now calling for a national investigation into the surge of counterfeit goods, urging the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, along with other relevant agencies, to take action.

They emphasize that not only are these counterfeit products a threat to the beverage industry, but also to the safety of consumers, as the ingredients used in cooking can potentially be harmful.

The user @Aimalohi6 specifically called upon the attention of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, urging them to address the issue and protect the food industry by cracking down on these counterfeit brands.

Popular Medical Doctor and influencer, Dr Chinonso Egemba, @aproko_doctor also wrote,  “Yes, drinking water is perfect for you but giving people fake soda and alcohol is wickedness. There’s a need to clamp down further on these people, this is most likely just the tip of an entire syndicate. No quality control, harmful materials etc.”

Another X user, @enodamade wrote, “It’s time for NAFDAC and SON to rise to the occasion and sanitise our consumption space!
We are dying needless deaths because of these fake products!”

The trend of fake goods being marketed to Nigerian consumers as real has continued to raise concerns in recent times.

Earlier in December, Daniel Benson, a Nigerian Afrobeats singer professionally known as BNXN threatened to call out certain clubs serving fake drinks.

“Respect my health, respect my money. Give me what I pay for. If you don’t have it, don’t bring a fake one. The next club or lounge that does this to me, I promise I will take that microphone from the hypeman and let you know,” he tweeted.

Last week, NAFDAC officials shut down the Cemetery Market in Aba, Abia State and arrested 10 suspects allegedly involved in the production of adulterated beverages.

Speaking with newsmen after the raid, the Director of, the Southeast Zone of NAFDAC, Martins Iluyomade compared the actions of the suspects to terrorism.

He said, “What’s happening here at Cemetery Market, Aba is worse than Boko Haram.

“We saw how many shops were converted into manufacturing centres for all manner of wines, expensive drinks, and revalidation of the expiry date of products.

“We have the cooperation of the state government and so far we have discovered 240 shops used for this illegal manufacturing of fake consumables and about 10 persons have been arrested and the arrests are still ongoing.”

The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, were also present at the meeting.

The resolution was signed by Fubara, his deputy Ordu, Wike, Ribadu, factional Speaker of the Rivers State Assembly Martin Amaewhule, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State Aaron Chukwuemeka, and the All Progressives Congress Chairman Tony Okocha.

Furthermore, the directive states that all impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers Assembly against Fubara should be dropped without delay.

The eight-point resolutions read: “All matters instituted in the courts by the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Fubara, and his team, in respect of the political crisis in Rivers State, shall be withdrawn immediately.

“All impeachment proceedings initiated against the Governor of Rivers State by the Rivers State House of Assembly should be dropped immediately

“The Rivers State House of Assembly shall choose where they want to sit and conduct their legislative business without interference and/or hindrance from the executive arm of government.

“The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Fubara, shall re-present the state budget to a properly constituted Rivers State House of Assembly.

“The names of all commissioners in the Rivers State Executive Council who resigned their appointments because of the political crisis in the State should be resubmitted to the House of Assembly for approval

“There should not be a caretaker committee for the local governments in Rivers State. The dissolution of the Local Government administration is null and void and shall not be recognised.”

The political crisis in Rivers State snowballed into the demolition of the state House of Assembly complex, which was burnt earlier, even as security personnel reportedly barricaded the entrance.
