AGF Malami defy twitter ban, logs into own account to deactivate

0

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), on Tuesday logged into Twitter and deactivated his account to show solidarity with the Federal Government which had suspended the social media platform last Friday.

Malami had on Saturday threatened to prosecute Nigerians who were still using the Virtual Private Networks to access Twitter even though no Nigerian law makes it illegal to tweet. But he defied his directives and that of the Nigerian Government by logging into his account because it is impossible to deactivate an account without logging into the platform.

In the meantime, the AGF took to his Facebook page on Tuesday, posting a photo and a caption which read, “My Twitter account deactivated’.

However, Malami’s post received comments with many of his Facebook followers asking him how he accessed Twitter without using VPN.

The National Broadcasting Commission had on Monday ordered all television and radio stations to deactivate their Twitter accounts.

The President’s wife, Aisha Buhari, had similarly deactivated her Twitter account shortly after the Buhari regime had announced that twitter is banned from Nigeria.

The Federal Government had last week suspended Twitter barely two days after the social media platform deleted a Tweet by the President Muhammadu Buhari, on the Biafran war.

#TwitterBan: SERAP, Falana drag Federal Government to ECOWAS Court

0

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and 176 concerned Nigerians have filed a lawsuit against the President Muhammadu Buhari administration over “the unlawful suspension of Twitter in Nigeria”.

The applicants are against the criminalization of Nigerians using Twitter, and the escalating repression of human rights, rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and media freedom.

Following the deletion of Buhari’s tweet, Information Minister, Lai Mohammed last week announced the ban of Twitter operations.

The government has threatened to arrest and prosecute anyone using Twitter, while the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) asked all broadcast stations to suspend the use of the social media platform.

The suit No ECW/CCJ/APP/23/21 was filed today before the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in Abuja.

SERAP and the concerned Nigerians are seeking: “An order of interim injunction restraining the Federal Government from implementing its suspension of Twitter in Nigeria, and subjecting anyone including media houses, broadcast stations using Twitter in Nigeria, to harassing, intimidating, arrest and criminal prosecution, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.”

In the suit filed by Solicitor to SERAP, Femi Falana (SAN), the plaintiffs contended that if the application is not urgently granted, federal authorities will continue to arbitrarily suspend Twitter.

They said the Buhari government was on the verge of slamming criminal charges and fines against telecommunication companies, media houses, broadcast stations and others.

The suit read in part: “The suspension of Twitter is aimed at stopping Nigerians from using Twitter and other social media platforms to assess government policies, expose corruption, and criticize acts of official impunity.

“The free communication of information and ideas about public and political issues between citizens and elected representatives is essential.

“This implies a free press and other media able to comment on public issues without censor or restraints, and to inform public opinion. The public also has a corresponding right to receive media output.

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right and the full enjoyment is central to achieving individual freedom and to developing democracy. It is not only the cornerstone of democracy, but indispensable to a thriving civil society”.

Nigeria Immigration Service Reopens Portal For Passport Applications

Federal Government has announced the reopening of passport application and payment portal from today, June 8, 2021.

The new development was disclosed by Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) spokesperson, Amos Okpu, in a statement issued on Tuesday.

It would be recalled that NIS suspended fresh passport applications to enable the clearance of a backlog of applications received before May 17.

New Comptroller of the command, Safiya Mohammed, announced this on Tuesday, in Ibadan, at a send forth for Usman Babangida, outgoing Comptroller.

According to Mohammed, the command had begun receiving new applications, in line with a directive by Comptroller-General of NIS, Mr Muhammad Babandede.

‘The wizard called Emmanuel has been consumed’ – Chris Okotie shades late TB Joshua

Senior pastor of household of God Church, Rev. Chris Okotie on Tuesday morning shared a cryptic post on his Facebook page in which he referenced a certain ”wizard of Endor” who assumed the title of ”Emmanuel” days after the death of the Senior Pastor and CEO of Emmanuel TV, Prophet TB Joshua was announced.

The clergyman in his post said the wizard who assumed the title of Emmanuel had been consumed by divine indignation.

Okotie further noted that the day of God’s vengeance has fully come to Nigeria though it wasn’t clear who he was directly referencing in his post.

”Hebrews 1:13 says Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.

”The wizard at Endor who assumed the title Emmanuel has been consumed by divine indignation. And now his disciples bewail his ignominious exit.

”No marvel, one-third of God’s angels followed the disgraced anointed cherub Lucifer!!

”Jesus our mighty gladiator has broken the head of the dragon with his mighty blows.

”He has descended from the mountain of spices with the fiery sword of his indignation. Glorious in his apparel and traveling in the greatness of his strength, he goes conquering and to conquer the adversaries of his church.

”Let those who swear by the Lord and by Malcham and the descendants of Haman, now tremble in fear.

”The day of the vengeance of our God has fully come to Nigeria. And they shall not escape,” he wrote.

Chris Okotie had once described the Prophet as the vicar of the devil on earth.

In one of his media comments, Okotie alleged that T.B. Joshua was a practitioner of an occult science called Docetic Gnosticism and Cerinthian heresy.

“‘He (T.B Joshua) has three symbols of mysticism. The first is called “The Head of Jesus Christ” or “Christ”. This is a reference to the source of his power. That power is invoked or acknowledged by the word, “Emmanuel.” okotie once said.

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, headed by Bishop Mike Okonkwo, denounced Joshua as an imposter in a statement.

It said the group had for years warned of “the dangers of infiltrators who have modernized cultism by injecting the name of Jesus Christ into their largely unbiblical practices. It is necessary that we reiterate this position that the Synagogue (of All Nations) falls into this category.”

#Twitterban: PDP Reps stage walkout

0

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the House of Representatives have staged a walkout over the refusal of the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, to grant their prayer on the Federal Government’s Twitter Ban.

Gbajabiamila had earlier asked relevant committees of the House to investigate the matter within 10 days.

Leader of the PDP caucus, Kingsley Chinda, much later, raised a point of order to make an additional prayer that the House asks the Federal Government to lift the ban pending when the House carries out the probe.

Chinda noted that the implication is that the ban would remain for 10 days, which means the rights of Nigerians would be kept in abeyance during the period.

Gbajabiamila, however, cited part of the Standing Orders of the House stating that a matter that had been concluded by the parliament cannot be revisited for a debate.

The Speaker, therefore, ruled Chinda out of order, a decision that did not go down well the members of the opposition.

Insisting on speaking and several leaders of the House shutting him down, Chinda led other PDP members out of the chamber.

Speaking earlier during his welcome address, the Speaker who affirmed that the suspension on Twitter in Nigeria has generated fierce debate, mandated the House Committees on Communication, Justice, Information & Culture, and National Security and Intelligence to immediately commence an investigation to determine: the circumstances of the decision by the Federal Government of Nigeria to suspend the operations of Twitter in Nigeria; and the legal authority for the ban on the operations of Twitter in Nigeria.

He also mandated the Committees to invite the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed to brief the House of Representatives on the objectives, intent, and duration of the suspension on the operations of Twitter in Nigeria, and to report to the House within 10 days.

Gbajabiamila said: “The House of Representatives recognises that Twitter, like other social media networks, is an important tool for communication and commerce in Nigeria, particularly amongst the younger generation who have used these networks for enterprise and innovation with great success.

“The House also recognises that as social media has been a tool for good, it can also be a tool for bad actors. As such, the government has a legitimate interest in ensuring that these platforms are not used to commit vile actions against individuals and the State.

Governor Ayade sacks commissioner for special duties, Francis Etta

0

Cross River State governor, Professor Ben Ayade has sacked his Commissioner for Special Duties, Francis Etta.

Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Governor, Christian Ita, announced this on Tuesday in Calabar.

Ita said that Ayade thanked Etta for his service to the state and wished him well in his future endeavours.

Recall that on Monday, Ayade’s special Adviser on Sustainable Development Goals, Mr Mark Obi, voluntarily resigned.

In his resignation letter, Obi said that “as a founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he would not defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Following recent happenings in the political alignment of the state governor, I am persuaded to review my involvement in the current state administration.

“Consequently, being a founding and subsisting member of the PDP in Cross River, I cannot in good conscience remain in my appointment as Special Adviser on Sustainable Development Goals.

“I hereby resign my appointment as Special Adviser immediately. I am very grateful to Gov. Ayade for finding me worthy to serve the state in the said capacity.

“Nevertheless, I will continue to support the state and government in any way possible as a stakeholder and senior citizen,” the letter read.

Obi had represented Boki 2 State Constituency in the Cross River House of Assembly under the PDP between 1999 and 2007

Kaduna State University suspends academic activities

The Kaduna State University (KASU) on Tuesday, suspended academic activities for its undergraduate students indefinitely.

KASU Registrar, Mr Samuel Manshop, disclosed this in a statement in Kaduna.

Manshop, who did not give reasons for the suspension, however, said academic activities would continue for postgraduate programmes, college of medicine, pharmaceutical sciences and part-time programmes.

“The management of KASU wishes to notify staff, students and the public that academic activities for undergraduate students have been suspended indefinitely.

“Postgraduate programmes, college of medicine, faculty of pharmaceutical sciences and part-time programmes are to continue with their activities.

“Staff are also expected to report to work as usual, while management will communicate further developments,” he said.

The undergraduate students had protested the hike in school fees from between N24,0000 and N36,000 to between N100,000 and N400,000.

The students, who began the protest since the increment was announced in April, demanded a reversal of the new school fees.

#TwitterBan: Reps give Lai Mohammed 10 days to justify suspension

The house of representatives has summoned the minister of informtion and culture, Lai Mohammed over the ongoing suspension of Twitter operations in the country.

This decision was taken at the plenary session on Tuesday.

As such, the house mandated its committees on communication, justice, information and culture, and national security and intelligence to launch an investigation into the suspension of the microblogging site.

During the plenary session, Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house, said the green chamber has been “inundated with comments about the decision, requests for intervention and criticism”.

“The House of Representatives recognises that Twitter, like other social media networks, is an important tool for communication and commerce in Nigeria, particularly amongst the younger generation who have used these networks for enterprise and innovation with great success,” he said.

“It is in service of our obligations under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and our moral duty to the Nigerian people, that the leadership of the House has decided to mandate the House Committees on Communication, Justice, Information and Culture, and National Security and Intelligence to immediately commence an investigation to determine the circumstances of the decision by the Federal Government of Nigeria to suspend the operations of Twitter in Nigeria, and the legal authority for the ban on the operations of Twitter in Nigeria.

“The Committees are additionally mandated to invite the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed to brief the House of Representatives on the objectives, intent, and duration of the suspension on the operations of Twitter in Nigeria, and to report to the House within ten days.”

Recall that on Friday last week, the Federal Government through the minister announced a ban on Twitter operations in Nigeria barely a day after the microblogging site deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s controversial tweet referencing the Nigerian civil war.

REPORT: Debunking COVID-19 misinformation from the pulpit

0

By Emiene Odaudu-Erame

“There are some places you enter, you come out, you could have been infected but your immunity had been built. Now taking the vaccine kills all that.”

These words were part of a sermon on April 21 2021, by Pastor Joy Amenkhinian a pastor with Christ Embassy, Port-Harcourt in a lunch hour service where she preached against taking the Covid 19 vaccine.

In that sermon, she claimed that taking the Covid 19 vaccine kills off every other immunity the human body has and protects only against Covid 19.

The sermon in which she made these comments was shared across different social media platforms and was streamed live on her Facebook fan page which has eleven thousand followers. The video had 106, 000 views and 779 comments and 1,900 likes. Commenting on the video was later turned off by an administrator of the page.

Pastor Amenkhinian took out about 10 minutes in her one hour twenty-one -minute sermon to make false claims about Covid-19 vaccines.

Among three key issues she raised are that the vaccine ‘kills’ off every other immunity in the human body and leaves anyone who takes the vaccine vulnerable to other infections; that Covid Vaccine has not been tested and is already being administered on people and that the vaccines has an expiry date; the last which is not necessarily false as all foods and drugs have expiry dates.

However, that information, it would seem, was added to help stoke public fear about the vaccines.

Pastor Amenkhinian’s comments are not isolated however as the President and Founder of the Church, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, a leading Pentecostal cleric in Nigeria has consistently made false and contentious claims about Covid 19, that include questioning its existence and challenging public health measures to mitigate its spread.

For example, Pastor Oyakhilome has often called on churches not to allow themselves to be labelled Covid 19 compliant or Covid free churches suggesting that Jesus cannot be present in such a church.
He has also often strongly criticized such Covid 19 public health mitigating measures, particularly the wearing of masks and social distancing.

Perhaps, one of the more outrageous efforts at disinformation is the claim that Covid vaccine is a way of compelling people to use 5G technology thereby making it easy to get the mark of the beast.

All of Pastor Oyakhilome’s messages, including sermons are streamed live on the 7 television channels run by the church and on its Youtube channel to it approximately 13, 000, 000 members and others who may be interested.

They are also extensively disseminated through Social Media platforms. Thus Pastor Amenkhinian’s anti-Covid sermons are not isolated as she and perhaps other clerics of the church are advancing the views of the founder of the church.

But is there any scientific basis to these claims which appears pervasive in Nigeria’s Pentecostal community?
DOES THE VACCINE KILL OFF EVERY OTHER IMMUNITY IN THE HUMAN BODY AND LEAVE ANYONE WHO TAKES THE VACCINE VULNERABLE TO OTHER INFECTIONS?

No, this is a false claim.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) in an explainer on its site about how safe the Vaccine is said
“Some COVID-19 vaccines have been developed with an approach that uses messenger Ribonucliec Acid (mRNA).

The mRNA vaccine technology has been studied for over a decade, including in the development of vaccines for Zika, rabies and influenza.

These mRNA vaccines have been rigorously assessed for safety, and clinical trials have shown that they provide a long-lasting immune response. mRNA vaccines are not live virus vaccines and do not interfere with human DNA.

The explainer went on to say that “After a COVID-19 vaccine is introduced, WHO supports work with vaccine manufacturers, health officials in each country and other partners to monitor for any safety concerns on an ongoing basis”.

The United States Centre for Disease Control is even more specific, information on its site says “COVID-19 vaccines teach our immune systems how to recognize and fight the virus that causes COVID-19.

It typically takes 2 weeks after vaccination for the body to build protection (immunity) against the virus that causes COVID-19.”

An expert on immunization and Health Financing Dr Shola Dele-Olowu said “Covid vaccines like other vaccines do not “strip” immunity.

Instead, they provide immunity against the diseases they target. “For example,” she added for emphasis, “measles vaccine protects children against measles disease, hepatitis B vaccines protect against Hep B disease and Covid Vaccine against Covid disease.

THE COVID VACCINE HAS NOT BEEN TESTED AND IT IS ALREADY BEEN ADMINISTERED TO PEOPLE.
This is also another false claim.

Again, the WHO in an explainer said “All of the approved COVID-19 vaccines have been carefully tested and continue to be monitored.”

According to the world health body, over 300 million doses have been administered to 150 million people as of March 2021. The WHO said “Like all vaccines, COVID-19 vaccines go through a rigorous, multi-stage testing process, including large clinical trials that involve tens of thousands of people.

These trials are specifically designed to identify any safety concerns.

An external panel of experts convened by WHO analyses the results from clinical trials and recommends whether and how the vaccines should be used. Officials in individual countries decide whether to approve the vaccines for national use and develop policies for how to use the vaccines based on WHO recommendations.”

DOES THE COVID VACCINE HAVE AN EXPIRY DATE AND ARE VACCINES MEANT TO HAVE EXPIRY DATES?
Dr Dele-Olowu who is a deputy director at Clinton Health Access Initiative said “Vaccines like all medicines have expiry dates. Health workers administer vaccines before they expire.”

The country has a system of retrieving all vaccines from health facilities when they are close to expiry and destroying them when they expire. She explained further that “all drugs have expiry, so do foods that we eat and processed drinks. So even if someone says it has expiry dates it should not be a problem.

Pastor Joy apart from stoking public sentiments about vaccines also admonished her congregation to continue to preach to those who have taken vaccines and not to give up on them. There by implying that taking the vaccine is some kind of sin and making it known that the unofficial church policy is anti-vaccine

2023: Atiku distances himself from campaign posters

0

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has dissociated himself from the 2023 Presidential campaign posters that surfaced in Abuja recently linking him and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, for the 2023 presidential election.

In a Monday statement signed by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku dismissed the posters as the handiwork of mischief makers.

He said rather than thinking of the next election, he is preoccupied with helping to find remedies to the current challenges facing the country.

According to the statement, “Our attention has been drawn to reports in some sections of the media, of campaign posters of His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Prof. Charles Soludo, an aspirant in the Anambra State governorship election, in some parts of Abuja.

“Ordinarily, we would have ignored the reports, but for the interest of those who may be misled by the disingenuous plot, we know nothing about the posters or those who may have promoted it.

“It is obvious that this is the work of mischief. For the avoidance of doubt, Atiku is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Soludo is of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). It is silly of anyone to attempt to drag the former vice president into an election in Anambra State which outcome will be determined by the people of the state.

“Atiku is presently preoccupied with other well-meaning Nigerians to help find solutions to the myriad of challenges plaguing our country such as insecurity and economic downturn marked by joblessness and extreme poverty.

“That explains why last Monday, the Waziri of Adamawa unveiled the headquarters of Standard Micro Finance Bank and two factories promoted by him in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, to provide jobs and opportunities.”

Ibe started in the statement that: “We wish to restate that the purported 2023 campaign posters in circulation linking Atiku with Soludo is the handiwork of mischief makers, and should be ignored.”

Lagos State Assembly to amend pension reform law

Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday during plenary proposed to amend the Lagos State Pension Reform Law, CAP L52, Laws of Lagos State, 2015 and Cap C136, Amendment of 2018.

The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa who presided over the plenary said: “The issue of pension has become a very disturbing one in the state as every one of us has a retiree who has been complaining about their inability to access their retirement benefits.

“This bill goes beyond the 21 days’ notice and there is a need for us to address the Bill. It should be thrown open and giving total overhauling.”

He added that “The Bill is complicated as this is the third time that we will be addressing the issue of pension. So we will take this opportunity to give it a global look and allow those retirees that have been denied the opportunity of accessing their benefits to come and be part of it.

“Also the professionals along this line to come on board and tell us what should be done so that we can have a perfect work on the matter and have a lasting solution “

Oluyinka Ogundimu, Chairman Committee on Establishments, Training, Pensions and Public Service while highlighting the proposed amendment stated that it is recommended that the provisions of section 89 (2) of the Pension Commission Act and Guidelines issued by it should apply instead of the State having its own provision.

#TwitterBan: ‘Twitter was not really helping the country’ – Yemi Solade

Veteran Nollywood actor Yemi Solade, has supported the Federal government’s Twitter ban, describing the move as the “best decision the Presidency could have made”.

Solade, in an interview with GoldmyneTV, said the social media platform went too far by insulting the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and by extension, all Nigerians.

He said, “This is not the first time Twitter will try to humiliate Nigeria. It happened to Pastor Chris Oyakilhome some years back. I think the white supremacist and imperialist tendencies should be curbed sometimes.

“As much as I am of the opinion that everybody has a right to expression and thoughts, but when a platform is used to want to ferment trouble and project anarchy, there should be rules regulating such practices. In this case, a lot happens on Twitter.

“I am not really a Twitter fan; I do little on Twitter. I would want to align with that school of thought that says Twitter was not really helping. Nigeria has so many problems to contend with and Twitter was not really helping the country.” he said.

According to Solade, most of the posts Twitter made were far too negative, especially hitting the government of Nigeria.
