Anambra Guber: Court nullifies APC, Uba’s participation

0

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, nullified the participation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Andy Uba, in the Nov. 6 Anambra governorship election.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, held that the June 26 primary of the party which produced Uba as its standard-bearer was not validly conducted.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chief George Moghalu, an aspirant in the APC primary election had challenged the process and the outcome of the primary election that produced Uba as the party’s candidate.

Moghalu, who was the plaintiff, had sued the party, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Uba as 1st to 3rd defendants respectively.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Ekwo aligned with the plaintiff’s arguments that the June 26 primary election breached the provisions of the Electoral Act and the APC guidelines for the conduct of the exercise.

He held that the plaintiff had successfully demonstrated that the primary election was not conducted in accordance with the law and the party’s guidelines.

“Therefore, the case of the plaintiff succeeds on its merit,” he said.

Ekwo held that since the election was conducted illegally, the APC (1st defendant) cannot be a beneficiary of the Nov. 6 election which produced the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Prof. Charles Soludo, as the winner of the poll outcome.

The judge, therefore, declared that the APC had no candidate in the Anambra governorship election by non-inclusion of the name of Moghalu in the primary election, and the conduct of the poll in contravention of the Electoral Act and the party’s guidelines.

“The 2nd defendant (INEC) is compelled to delist the name of the 1st defendant and 3rd defendant from the Nov. 6, Anambra governorship election,” he ordered.

According to the judge, any election conducted contrary to the 1st defendant guideline is in nullity.“The real issue was not whether accredited members of 1st defendant voted on that day but whether the election was conducted in accordance with the election guidelines of 1st defendant,” he held.

He also said that the evidence of the police report confirmed that the election was conducted outside the time frame.

Ekwo, who described the conduct of the primary by APC as “crude and primitive,” ordered that the N22.5 million paid by Moghalu as expression of interest and nomination forms be refunded since the party failed to comply with the provisions of the law and its guidelines.NAN reports that Moghalu had, in July, filed the suit at the court, seeking an order removing Uba and the APC from the list of gubernatorial candidates and political parties partaking in the Anambra governorship election on the grounds that the party failed to conduct a valid primary election.

He also demanded N122.5 million as damages, which include a refund for the fee paid for expression of interest and nomination forms and N100 million “for the breach of contract to commence and conclude primary election”.

INEC had picked Uba, winner of the APC primary election, as the party’s candidate. In the affidavit in support of the suit, the plaintiff said the APC failed to conclude the selection and nomination process for its candidate for the Nov. 6 governorship poll.

He said the APC had chosen to adopt direct primary, which is why the party published the list of designated venues for the exercise.

Moghalu said the party received N22.5 million for the expression of interest form and nomination form, including from him, “to allow him to participate in the primary election exercise”.

He further said he was informed a day before the primaries that the APC electoral committee would address all aspirants and stakeholders in Akwa.

“Shockingly, on June 26, 2021, the said election committee was not seen anywhere in Anambra; no accreditation of voters took place; no voting and collation of votes occurred in all the 326 wards of Anambra state,” he said.

He said the committee “announced election results it did not conduct, and which fakery was credited to the 3rd defendant as the winner of the primary election scheduled for emergence as APC’s candidate in the November 6 governorship election in Anambra”.

Moghalu also argued that the party did not invite the INEC in line with the law requiring the commission to monitor the exercise.

Christmas: Bag of rice now N30,000; small broiler N3,500 in Ibadan — Sellers

0

As Christmas is fast approaching, sellers and buyers of food items in Ibadan have lamented the hike in prices of commodities.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Correspondents who spoke with sellers in Bodija, Agbeni and Oja-Oba markets, on Monday, report that dealers in tomato, pepper and rice decried the low patronage due to the high cost.

Many attributed the situation to the high cost of transporting food items from the North, high inflation rate and insecurity, especially in the North where bandits have forced farmers to abandon their farms.

A tomato, pepper and onion seller who identified herself as Iya Ibeji, said most of the commodities go bad due to poor patronage.

“A basket of tomato now, the big round one, rose from between N14,000 and N15,000 to about N20,000.

“The small bucket which was sold for between N700 and N800 now costs N2,000; the small bucket of pepper rose from N700 to N1,200.

“Medium size basket of onion, about 40 to 42 pieces in one basket, which cost N800 in the past, now sells for N1,600,” she said.

Also speaking, Mrs Joy Ayeni, who sells rice, vegetable oil and other condiments, said the number of buyers has reduced.

“A bag of rice, big grain, rose from N27,000/N28,000, to N29,500/N30,000, while the small grain that cost around N25,000 in the past, now sells for N27,000/N28,000.

“This has affected sellers too because we don’t buy as much as we used to buy.

“Imagine a 25liter container of Kings vegetable oil, previously sold for N26,000, now costs N27,000, we only pray to at least sell something if not all in a day,” she said.

Also, Mrs Victoria Bello, who sells Broilers, said they recorded low patronage due to the prevailing high cost of commodities.

“A small broiler, sold for between N2,000 to N2,500, now costs N3,500 and the price will even rise further,” she said, lamenting that buyers now prefer frozen chicken because it’s a bit cheaper.

A Buyer and Mother, who identified herself as Iya Cynthia, said her purchasing power has weakened due to the inflated cost of food items.

“We are just managing things, the little we can get we buy because we can’t just fold our hands and be looking at the children during such a festive period.

“The same salary is what we are using for house rent, hospital/electricity bills and other expenditures, it’s really not easy but we will celebrate anyhow and thank God for our lives at least,” she said.

Also, a father, Mr John Bamgbose, said he had no option than to reduce the amount of things to buy.

“Before, my family used to buy turkey and broilers but now we manage one broiler and look for ponmo (cow skin) to add up.

“The government should please help us to do something about this high cost of commodities because it’s really alarming.

“Even drinks are now very costly – a crate of mineral (35 CL) is N1,400, this used to be around N800/N900, while 70 CL is now N120 for a bottle and these are the drinks one can use to celebrate during Christmas,” he said.

0

The minister, represented by the Director General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Abubakar-Nuhu Fikpo, said this during the launch of the disbursement of empowerment items to women in Jos, Plateau State.

The N100 billion, according to the minister, was disbursed via the Development Bank of Nigeria from 2017 to facilitate Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with the view to creating jobs to the country’s teeming unemployed.

“Since 2017, the Development Bank of Nigeria has disbursed a total of N100 billion through the bank’s 27 participating financial Institutions (PFIs), thereby impacting more than 100,000 MSMEs.

“It is heartwarming to note that 52 per cent of loans disbursed in 2019 and 2020 were to youths and women-owned businesses,” he said.

Mr Keyamo, while addressing the beneficiaries, noted that the NDE empowerment of women was designed to ensure that the beneficiaries and trainees acquire relevant and marketable skills that would galvanise them into starting their own businesses.

”Our goal is to provide them with quick income-generating opportunities because of their roles in providing family support and sound social stability at the very foundation of society,” he said.

He, however, added that the women were also trained in interior decoration, make-over, auto gele tying, food processing and packaging.

“I am glad to inform you that each of the participants will be given a loan package ranging from N100,000, to N150,000, depending on their choice of skill, to start their own businesses in order to exit the labour market.

“This will enable them to become more responsible to their family and immediate environment,”he added.

Buhari has returned to the State House Abuja after a three-day trip to Istanbul, Turkey

President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to the State House Abuja after a three-day trip to Istanbul, where he participated in a Turkey – Africa Partnership Summit.

Why Bola Tinubu should jettison his Presidential ambition by backing a younger candidate – APC Leader

0

The Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu, has appealed to Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to jettison his presidential ambition by backing a younger candidate from the South.

Okechukwu, a foundation member of the APC made this submission while entertaining questions from journalists at the 2021 Eke Day in Abuja on Sunday.

He said: “If one is consulted by our national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on whether he should run or not for the exalted office of the President of Nigeria in 2023, my candid advice will be that he should use his abundant Almighty God’s endowment to unite the APC and unite the South and by extension our beloved country, by backing a candidate from the southeast.”

Okechukwu advised the APC leader to throw his weight behind a younger person from the South, especially the Southeast geopolitical zone to emerge as the President in 2023.

Tinubu by so doing, Okechukwu said, would have united the south forever; as some northerners have complained that why they are reluctant to support southern candidates is because of lack of cohesion among the two major geopolitical zones in the south.

The VON boss posited that if Tinubu widens his search he will definitely find a credible candidate from the southeast who will easily defeat the presumed candidate of the PDP, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

According to him, by so doing he would have wittingly used one stone to kill two birds – unite the APC, and unite the South and by extension, the entire country.

He emphasized that it will be statesmanlike for Asiwaju to be a Kingmaker than throwing his hat into the ring.

Asked why Tinubu should be restricted to only Kingmaker and not the King himself, Okechukwu argued that, “the scriptures said there is time for everything which happens on earth.

” Am one of those Buharists who have tremendous respect for Asiwaju for the critical supplement he added to Buhari’s 12 million Vote-Bank, which resulted in our 2015 presidential election victory. It is not a mean feat when you consider that with Buhari’s Vote-Bank, we were unable to win in 2003, 2007, and 2011, until the merger of the legacy political parties, where Tinubu played a major role.”

On whether there is an agreement between Tinubu and Buhari in 2015 to be his running mate in the presidential election, Okechukwu answered, “I don’t know of any agreement.”

“However as I said, the scriptures posit that there is time for everything which happens on this planet. All I know is that there was a raging debate on the proprietary of Muslim/Muslim ticket as to whether it can guarantee the victory of the APC at the 2015 presidential election.

“This was what to the best of my knowledge which denied Tinubu the Vice Presidential slot and not the scanty insinuation of breach of the agreement. The scale of Muslim/Muslim ticket was weighty unlike in 1993 Abiola/Kingibe tickets. It was thoroughly debated and dropped, for defeat phobia.”

He insisted that Buhari did not breach any agreement with Tinubu, but it was realpolitik at play.

Okechukwu said given the foregoing background, Tinubu would etch his name in gold if he utilizes his Almighty God’s endowed resources to support anyone from the South East to be Nigeria president of Igbo extraction.

Asked why should Tinubu support a Southeast candidate instead of his protege, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who is meters away from the coveted seat of the presidency, Osita maintained that the rotation started from the South-West in 1999 and therefore, going by equity and natural justice the South-East should be allowed to produce the President in 2023.

“One, it is because of the zoning convention which has governed the 4th Republic since 1999, a convention which states that the president should rotate between north and south. It started in 1999 from the southwest, with Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as president.

“Secondly, our brothers in the South-South had their turn to preside over Nigeria. Southeast is the only geopolitical zone in the south that had not presided over Nigeria except the six months of General Aguiyi Ironsi’s stint.

“This uncommon statesmanlike Tinubu’s gesture will unite the south, for many had bemoaned the lack of synergy between politicians from both the South-East and South-West geopolitical zones.”

On whether he is ruling Tinubu out because of age, Okechukwu said it was far from it.

He said: “Whereas one cannot canvas age in any particular manner; we at the same time need generational transformation.”

No wonder my first marriage didn’t work – Media Personality, Daddy Freeze

Ifedayo Olarinde popularly known as Daddy Freeze, is a Nigerian-Romanian broadcaster and radio talk show host has reacted to reports about Ikoyi registry marriages being illegal and invalid.

A Federal High Court in Lagos was reported to have given the verdict on Ikoyi registry earlier. In his reaction, Daddy Freeze attributed the failure of his first marriage to the report about the registry.

Daddy Freeze who had his court wedding at the venue declared that his first marriage was invalid from the very beginning.

“No wonder my first marriage didn’t work out. It was null and void from the get go.??

If this report had come out sooner, I won’t even have needed a divorce, na every body go your way for end am.?”.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Interior has debunked reports making the rounds that the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has declared all marriages conducted by the Ikoyi marriage registry illegal and invalid.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, the Permanent Secretary and Principal Registrar of Marriages, Ministry Of Interior, described the reports as “false, misleading and a deliberate distortion of the decision of the Court in Suit No: FHC/L/CS/816/18 between Eti-Osa Local Government Council & 3 others”.

According to the statement, the court only ruled that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Interior, is constitutionally empowered to conduct marriages in Nigeria and the Local Governments were only delegated by the Federal Government to conduct marriages, by virtue of Legal Notices issued pursuant to the Marriage Act.

It also stated that contrary to their (local government’s) pleading, the trial judge held that nothing in the role of local governments, as defined in the Constitution, suggests that they can conduct or contract marriages. However, the only power is derived from the Legal Notices issued by the President.

“Vote for four years, not two weeks of rice and beans,” – Pastor Paul Adefarasin tells Nigerians ahead of 2023 elections

0

The Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church Lekki, Paul Adefarasin, has urged Nigerians to vote wisely in the 2023 elections.

He gave the advice during his church’s “Project Spread” where food items are delivered to members of his church and community in the spirit of Christmas.

“Vote for four years, not two weeks of rice and beans,” Mr. Adefarasin told his audience on Saturday.

The cleric drew similarities between the food items delivered by his church to the community with the ones usually distributed by politicians during elections.

He said Nigerians should cast their votes with the next four years in mind, rather than the two weeks lifespan of the food items distributed by politicians.

“These foodstuffs will not last more than two weeks, so when election time comes, vote for four years and not two weeks,” Mr. Adefarasin said.

He said he was not campaigning for elective office, but came to show the people “the love of God and also to point you in the right direction so that you can benefit from what God has put in your country.

“That is all I have to say this morning, except to wish you a merry Christmas and a sensible new year,” he added.

Explaining his reasons for the outreach, he wrote on his Instagram, “Today, we took some time to give back to the people in our community”.

He Said, Project Spread is an Initiative which is aimed at showing the true meaning of Christmas to those around us, especially our community!

“We are celebrating the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, more so by putting a big smile on the faces of the less privileged in the communities around us”.

“It is always a very rewarding experience ?. Please don’t keep the gift to yourself, share with someone, this Christmas ?.”
