Nigeria Police Force has announced the successful extradition of Benjamin Best Nnayereugo, widely known as “Killaboi,” from Doha, Qatar to Nigeria

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the successful extradition of Benjamin Best Nnayereugo, widely known as “Killaboi,” from Doha, Qatar to Nigeria.

A statement on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the fugitive, who had been on the run for the murder of Miss Augusta Oseodion Onuwabhagbe, was returned to the country in the early hours of Saturday, 19th April 2025.

Femi Falana’s chambers was actively involved in the tracking of the fugitive, Best Nnayereugo.
The suspect had been to six different countries before being tracked to Qatar by the legal luminary’s firm.

The police said this was through the coordinated efforts with the Ministry of Justice, INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Force Headquarters Abuja and the Qatari Judicial Authorities.
According to Adejobi, the extradition of Nnayereugo, followed a petition from the family of the deceased, submitted through their legal representatives dated 29th September 2024. The matter was assigned to INTERPOL NCB Abuja for  investigation.

“Investigations revealed that the suspect, Benjamin Best Nnayereugo, murdered Miss Onuwabhagbe, a 21-year-old first-class student of Lead City University, Ibadan, at his residence located at No. 24A Abiola Apooyi Street, Oral Estate, Ajah, Lagos, on 13th July 2023.

“After committing the crime, he fled Nigeria and later released an online video purporting to confess to the act, a deceptive strategy to derail investigative efforts.”
The statement noted that following his declaration as wanted by the NPF Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on 13th October 2023, an INTERPOL Red Notice was issued for his global apprehension.
“He was initially arrested in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on 20th October 2023 under the false identity “KANU PRINCETON SAMUEL,” but escaped custody during a prison break on 26th November 2023 in Freetown.

“Further intelligence gathering revealed that the suspect continued to evade law enforcement, traversing multiple regions including West Africa, East Asia and the Middle East, under forged identities before eventually relocating to Doha, Qatar on 24th January, 2025. Operating under the alias “TOURE ABDOULAYE” with a fraudulent Guinean passport, he secured illegal employment and concealed his identity.

“Through robust international cooperation and the use of advanced biometrics, INTERPOL NCB Abuja, in collaboration with INTERPOL NCB Doha, confirmed his identity, leading to his arrest by Qatari authorities in February 2025. An official extradition request, processed via the Federal Ministry of Justice, Abuja, was subsequently approved by the Qatari judicial authorities, resulting in his repatriation to Nigeria.”

The Force Spokesman, quoted the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to have commended the diligence of INTERPOL NCB Abuja in the arrest, while recognising the strength in the synergy amongst nations to curb trans-border crimes.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Honorable Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Government of Qatar, INTERPOL NCB Doha, and the Nigerian Embassy in Qatar for their invaluable collaboration in securing the fugitive’s return.

“We assure the general public of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring that the suspect faces diligent prosecution, as part of the NPF’s dedication to justice and the safety of all Nigerians,” IGP Egbetokun was quoted to have said.

Farooq Kperogi: Tinubu’s Lagos-Centric Yorubaization of Nigeria

0

Last week, in response to mounting, difficult-to-controvert, empirically impregnable accusations that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu disproportionately favors his Yoruba ethnic group in consequential federal appointments, the presidency circulated a list of Tinubu’s appointments to countermine the firmly fixed national narrative of Tinubu’s unexampled ethnocentrism but was compelled to withdraw it because it was embarrassingly error-ridden and factually inaccurate.

Sunday Dare, the President’s Media Adviser on Media and Public Communication, tweeted on April 10 that the presidency had “noticed a number of errors in the list of appointments tweeted,” said they were “sorry,” and that they would “provide an updated list later.”

More than a week later, we haven’t seen the updated list that Dare promised, which will supposedly show that, in spite of incontestable evidence to the contrary, Tinubu’s appointments reflect fairness to the ethnic and regional complexities of Nigeria and that the Yoruba people don’t dominate appointments and control the commanding heights of the economy.

Interestingly, while the presidency is still updating its list and eating humble pie, a more damning list of Tinubu’s appointments has emerged. It is longer and shows an even more indefensibly insidious, not to mention unexampled, ethnocentric capture of the major levers of government.

Again, while we are awaiting the updated list of Tinubu’s appointments that shows evidence of a fair distribution of federal appointments, the government chose to undermine itself and provide additional ideational ammunition for his critics who say he is beholden to advancing the unfair dominance of his ethnic group.

On April 16, the administration announced the formation of an eight-member committee to oversee preparations for the national census. Of the eight, five were Yoruba. In a country comprising over 500 ethnic groups, such a configuration reflects a troubling insensitivity to the symbolic and political weight of representation, especially in a matter as contentious and identity-laden as a national headcount.

The exclusion of the northeast, southeast, and south-south from the committee cannot be dismissed as oversight. Nor can the disproportionate Yoruba presence be defended as incidental. The demographic sensitivities surrounding census exercises in Nigeria are historically fraught.

That the president’s team would assemble a committee so lopsided at such a politically volatile time betrays either a stunning lack of political judgment or a deeper confidence that no consequence will follow such overt ethno-regional privileging. Either way, the signal is unmistakable and deeply corrosive.

Equally emblematic was the decision to have the president’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila — a fellow Yoruba and an unelected official whose role has no constitutional standing — inaugurate the committee. This move, while procedurally permissible, was laden with semiotic overreach.

The constitutionally designated deputy of the president, Vice President Kashim Shettima, a northerner, was bypassed despite being present in the country. The optics communicate the message of an informal inner circle displacing formal constitutional roles, with ethnicity as a defining axis of inclusion and exclusion.

For an administration straining excessively hard to convince a skeptical nation that the evidence of ethnic bigotry in governance that stares them in the face isn’t what they think it is, gestures like this do not merely raise questions; they answer them in ways that deepen cynicism and confirm suspicions.

I think honchos of the Tinubu administration shoot themselves in the foot and expose themselves to ridicule when they try to defend the administration’s Yoruba-centric favoritism because their rhetoric is often hysterically at variance with the evidence.

They have two options. The first option is silence. There is more dignity in silence than lies, easily refutable lies. It’s better to be thought a fool, as the saying goes, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

The second option is to be bold and point out that Tinubu is merely expanding the ethnocentric path that Buhari paved. In several previous columns where I railed against the Arewa-centric favoritism of Buhari’s appointments, I repeatedly warned that Buhari’s southern successor would expand on his bigotry and that defenders of Buhari’s favoritism who insulted me would have no moral pedestal to stand on when that happened.

That time has come. To be frank, I am enjoying seeing people who defended, explained away, or ignored Buhari’s favoritism (because they imagined that he would be in power for ever) squirming and complaining of Tinubu’s more expansive, unapologetic ethnic capture of the levers of government.

When you initiate an action, you can’t determine the nature and contour of the reaction. Saying Buhari was less exclusionary than Tinubu is now is a weak charge. Buhari shouldn’t have started it, and the people who defended him or looked away should have known that this moment would come.

Of course, the people who benefit from or who defend Tinubu’s unabashed Yoruba-centrism should be aware that, like Buhari’s Arewa-centrism, it also has an expiration date, and that the successor to it may be worse than it.

Defenders of the narrow-mindedness of the Tinubu regime should also be aware of other unintended consequences of their ethnic triumphalism. Just like Buhari has caused the Fulani (including poor, innocent ones) to be reviled all over Nigeria, everyday Yoruba people who also suffer the consequences of Tinubu’s economic policies, will be targets of transferred aggression.

Like the Fulani, the Yoruba may become the objects of undeserved and unearned ethnic hate on account of the president’s inability to see beyond this ethnic enclave in appointments and symbolic actions.

It doesn’t matter that, like a Yoruba friend tells me each time this issue comes up, Tinubu’s outward Yoruba-centrism actually masks a more exclusionary Lagos-centrism. He says most of the Yoruba people Tinubu appoints to important positions have connections to Lagos.

I don’t doubt him. In fact, in a January 24, 2024, column titled, “North and Tinubu’s Back-to-Lagos Moves,” I made that point.

“With a few notable (and in some cases unavoidable) exceptions, Tinubu’s government is largely the re-enactment of his time as the governor of Lagos,” I wrote. “It is, for all practical purposes, an unabashed Lagos-centric Yorubacracy. To be fair, though, with the possible exception of Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, all civilian regimes since 1999 have been insular ethnocracies.”

I should also point out that in spite of appearances to the contrary, many well-informed, cosmopolitan Yoruba people are embarrassed by Tinubu’s unabashed favoritism toward Yoruba people at the expense of other ethnic groups.

For example, when Tinubu was considering Bayo Ojulari as the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, it was a Yoruba man who is close to the Tinubu power orbit, who reached out to me, giving me the privilege to be the first person to break the news months before it was officially confirmed.

In my widely shared December 28, 2024, column titled, “Tinubu’s Buharization of the NNPC,” I wrote the following:

“Ironically, this column was inspired by a well-regarded Yoruba supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is worried, in fact embarrassed, by the optics of what he says is Tinubu’s relentless Yorubacentric take-over of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC).

“His concern wasn’t just partisan discomfort; it was a profound unease about how this nepotistic approach undermines national cohesion.”

However, after I discovered that Ojulari is a northern Yoruba, not a Southwestern Yoruba as my source had thought, I wrote a follow-up column (see “NNPC and Fresh Perspectives on Ojulari’s Identity,” January 04, 2025) to clarify my position and to argue that it’s disingenuous to deny the northern identity of northern Yoruba people only when they benefit from the representational benefits of being northerners.

As I have argued many times in the past, appointments are the symbolic conduits through which citizens relate to governments. That is why representational justice is crucial for a complex, multi-ethnic country like Nigeria.

However, since our national leaders have historically chosen to find comfort only in their ethnic and regional cocoons and to abandon the hard task of building bridges and integrating our disparate but entirely collapsible identities, we will continue to sink deeper and deeper into the low watermarks of exclusion and bitter divisions.

Boko Haram on Friday night invaded Gwoza local government headquarters in Borno state

0

Armed terrorists suspected to be members of Boko Haram on Friday night invaded Gwoza local government headquarters in Borno state.

Recall that some terrorists had last Thursday infiltrated into Yamtake village, a community located about 14km from Gwoza town, and killed two soldiers and an unspecified number of civilians.

The Gwoza town infiltration, according to fleeing residents, started at about 11:08 as troops of the 26 Task Force Brigade engaged the attackers as people scampered for safety.

Details of casualties is still yet unknown as the exchange of gunfire and explosions engulfed the town.

Gwoza was once a Boko Haram caliphate before it was liberated by troops a few years ago.

Details later.

Presidency has debunked reports that Vice President Kashim Shettima was denied access to the Presidential Villa

0

The Presidency has debunked reports that Vice President Kashim Shettima was denied access to the Presidential Villa.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (office of the Vice-President), Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, described the report as “deliberate and well-planned orchestration of falsehood”.

In a statement on Saturday in Abuja, Nkwocha said the publication was a story so far removed from reality.

According to him, such misinformation can only be entertained by those unfamiliar with the inner workings of the Nigerian government.

Nkwocha, therefore, urged the public to disregard such malicious publications and advised the media to continue to seek information from credible sources and approach sensational claims with the caution it deserves.
“This we owe ourselves collectively as a nation,” he added.

He said that in recent times, there has been deliberate and well-planned orchestration of falsehood against the vice president’s person and office in many multidimensional forms.
”These mischievous and totally fabricated reports are all in a bid to cause confusion and insinuate total clash in the presidency.

”These reports seek to mislead the public into believing there’s discord at the highest levels of government.

”The latest in this string of disinformation is a report claiming that the vice president has been refused entry to the villa.

”This is a feeble attempt to traduce the person and office of His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima. For the record, NOTHING OF THE SORT EVER HAPPENED.

”The recent publication by some obscure blogs alleging that armed military units have barricaded the vice president from accessing the presidential villa is not only the wildest expression of wishful thinking.
“(It’s) a clear indication that the purveyors of these tales have exhausted both ink and imagination.”

Nkwocha said earlier this week that the presidency dismissed similar fake news about responsibility for the circulation of campaign posters bearing the images of President Bola Tinubu.

Donald Trump, is set to close nearly 30 embassies and consulates around the world, and more in Africa

0

The United States President, Donald Trump, is set to close nearly 30 embassies and consulates around the world, with several of the closures affecting missions in Africa, Europe, and Asia.

According to an internal State Department document, the outlines plans to shut down 10 embassies and 17 consulates.

Embassies in Lesotho, South Sudan, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, Malta, and Luxembourg are among those proposed for closure.

The consulates affected include those in France, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and South Africa, CNN reports.

This restructuring is part of a wider initiative led by the Elon Musk-backed Department of Government Efficiency, which seeks to reduce the size of the federal government.

The document suggests that the responsibilities of the closed missions would be absorbed by nearby embassies and consulates.

However, it remains unclear whether Secretary of State Marco Rubio has approved the plan.

The proposed changes also involve scaling back diplomatic operations in Somalia and Iraq — two countries central to US counterterrorism efforts.

Meanwhile, missions in countries like Japan and Canada are recommended to adopt a consolidated consular model as examples for future diplomatic configurations.

State Department spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, refused to confirm details of the document.

“I would suggest that you check with the White House and the President of the US as they continue to work on their budget plan and what they submit to congress,” Bruce stated.

“The kinds of numbers and what we tend to see is reporting that is early or wrong, based on leaked documents from somewhere unknown.”

The proposed closures affect missions that typically operate with smaller staff, yet remain crucial to American diplomatic operations.

These embassies and consulates provide key services, including visa processing, assistance to American citizens abroad, and intelligence gathering, all of which are vital for US foreign policy.

The document also proposes the introduction of “FLEX-style light footprint posts” with limited staff and focus, and suggests “dual-hatted leadership” for overlapping diplomatic missions, such as those representing the US at the OECD and UNESCO in Paris.

The CPC, bloc of the All Progressives Congress at loggerheads over Tinubu’s second term

0

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Dr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, has dismissed claims by Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura’s group that members of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, bloc of All Progressives Congress, APC, had ruled out defection and endorsed President Bola Tinubu for 2027 elections.

Malami, who spoke through his media aide, Muhammed Bello Doka, said the CPC bloc, which was former President Muhammadu Buhari’s platform, said the bloc was the only entity that could speak on whether or not it was leaving the APC and not Al-Makura’s group.

“When you say CPC bloc, one needs to know who they are referring to. Is it the likes of Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Adamu Adamu, Masari and Faruku Adamu Aliyu who, a few months ago had been throwing Buhari under the bus, in desperate attempts to gain relevance that should decide for the bloc? Malami queried.

He described their decision as personal, with no connection with CPC bloc, adding that it was for them to gain relevance in the APC for personal benefits.

On his rumoured defection to the Social Democracy Party, SDP, Malami dismissed it as figments of the imagination of those peddling the rumour.
“Malami is a prominent figure in Nigeria, therefore, cannot defect to any party in secret, he is still in APC but in a broad consultations with different platforms. Until the consultations are over, it is premature to talk about defection or declaration of interest.”

He, however, said he remained in active politics and would make his position known when the time wast ripe to do so.
‘’Malami has right to belong to any political party and to contest any position in Kebbi State,’’ the aide said.

Recall that the former Nasarawa State governor, Al-Makura, former Katsina governor, Bello Masari, ex-Education Minister, Alhaji AdamuAdamu, along with 20 others, had after a meeting issued a communique, affirming their support for President Tinubu and his policies and programmes.

The communique had read partly: ‘’We, the undersigned leaders and committed members of the former CPC, who were part of those instrumental in the historic merger that gave birth to the APC, hereby issue this statement to clarify our unalloyed loyalty to our great party and express firm solidarity with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

‘’Recent misleading narrative suggesting a defection or disaffection among CPC stakeholders are false, misleading and should be ignored. We remain integral to the APC and are fully aligned with its leadership.’’

Nyesom Wike, has disclosed the reason he vehemently opposed Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition in 2023

0

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed the reason he vehemently opposed Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition in 2023.

Contrary to the claim that his anti-Atiku stand ahead of the 2023 election was because the former Vice President didn’t pick him as his running mate, Wike said his decision to oppose Atiku was solely based on principle.

Apart from his persistent call for power rotation, Wike claimed Atiku was not a trustworthy politician.

“I wanted power rotation, I could not have imagined that after eight years of Buhari, power goes to north again. It is not about whether you chose to field me or not, it’s about principle. To take take that decision was difficult and a decision has to be taken and I looked at it, Atiku was not an option, so, he is a no go area,” he said.

When asked if Atiku stopped being an option after the ex-VP decided to drop him as his running mate, Wike said, “He never dropped me as his running mate because he picked me.”

The former Governor of Rivers State explained that the main reason he opposed Atiku’s ambition was due to his dishonesty.
“Let me tell you from day one, I told my delegates when they came that one thing you must know is that Atiku does not keep to his words,” Wike claimed.

Citing how Atiku, Saraki and Secondus allegedly deceived him in 2019, Wike said he knew from day one that Atiku wouldn’t choose him as his running mate. He (Wike) has never banked on the ex-Vice President’s words.

“I can tell you authoritatively what happened. In 2019, Atiku, Saraki and Secondus came to see me that I was going to nominate the attorney general and minister of petroleum. When we lost the election, the man who was supposed to bring the attorney general did not know when the legal team was constituted, and I laughed; I watched it on television, and I now called Saraki; you people have constituted a legal team, and you said I was going to bring attorney general.

Kano APC sets conditions for Kwankwaso, and others to join the party

0

The Kano State chapter of the All Progressive Congress, APC, on Friday said it is ready to receive the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and others, but with conditions to join the party.

The state party chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, made this known while addressing a press conference at the party secretariat on Friday.

Abbas said the attention of the party has been drawn to speculations of the impending decamping of the factional leader of the NNPP, Kwankwaso, into the party.

He said the party has already directed the ward chapters to open registers for new decampees, irrespective of their political and social stature and in line with the party’s constitution.

According to him, “APC as a political institution in its renewed hope agenda has embarked on the project of receiving decampees from all political parties. Of recent, the attention of the party has been drawn to speculations of the impending decamping of the leader of the expelled faction of the NNPP, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, into the party. This is a welcome development, especially given the fact that the APC remains his last political refuge, as he has successfully destroyed his relations with all other political groupings in the country.

“Without prejudice to our desire as a party to welcome new entrants and in respect of the constitutional rights of citizens to belong to political parties of their choice, we wish to state our position as a state chapter of our great party in Kano State. We have already directed our ward chapters to open registers for new decampees, irrespective of their political and social stature, and this is in line with our party’s constitution.
“We advise all those desirous of joining our esteemed party to go to their respective wards and register. Also, we want to assure our elected party officials from the ward, local government, senatorial and state levels that they will continue to function as provided by the tenure of their office in the party constitution. For the purpose of seeking any future party or elective position, any old or new entrants shall be free to exercise his/her constitutional rights of voting or being voted for without any special preference.

“We are fully aware that some people are desperate to join the APC because they have scuttled their political goodwill and have become political lepers in the national scheme of things and are looking to the APC for political relevance. We are also aware that some politicians are trying to run away from accounting for their corrupt misdeeds both in government and party administration and seeking refuge in the APC to escape from the fangs of anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC and ICPC.

“However, joining APC as a political party is not a panacea for escaping from their past sins. For the avoidance of doubt, let me emphasise that the APC as a political party does not and will not encourage or promote the existence of cult-like associations in the name of political activities or groupings.
