Full list of past Olubadans and the number of years they reigned

The recent death of Oba Lekan Balogun, the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, came as a surprise to many Nigerians with condolences from different Nigerian politicians.

However, the longest reigning Ibadan monarch is Olubadan Okunola Abaasi Alesinloye Isale Ijebu who ruled for 16 years from 1930 to 1946.

Meanwhile, about six past Olubadans only ruled for one year such as the first, Lagelu, in 1820 while there are monarchs of the ancient city who only ruled for a few months.

How the Olubadan selection works:

There are two lines which are the ??tún (civil line) and the Balógun (military line). When one Olúbàdàn ascends to be with the ancestors, the next person in line ascends to the throne.

Since the last (42nd) Olubadan was from the civil line, the next Olubadan is expected to be from the military line. Therefore, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Balogun of Ibadanland, is the Olubadan-designate of the city.
