The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) said it will sanction staff without the National Identification Number (NIN).In a memo handed to all employees yesterday, with the title: “Compulsory NIN For All Staff,” NIMC said it has come to management notice that some staff members are yet to be enrolled into the National Identity Database, and as such, do not have the unique NIN.

The identity management body recalled that the NIMC ACT No 23 of 2007, clearly states that the NIMC has the mandate to establish, own, operate, maintain and manage the National Identity Database in Nigeria, register persons covered by the Act, assign a Unique NIN and issue multi-purpose cards to those, who are citizens of Nigeria as well as others legally residing within the country.

Consequently, the NIMC said the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer has directed that no staff member should be without the NIN, as it is a mandatory requirement.

On this note, NIMC in a statement, signed by the Deputy Director/Head, Human Capital Management Department, Mrs. Rhoda Jackden, said the DG/CEO, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has further directed that any staff, who does not have the NIN will not be considered for training, and could face disciplinary action.

“Given the above, any staff without the NIN should obtain one on or before, Wednesday, January 31, 2024,” NIMC stated. Already, NIMC has issued 104.16 million NINs to Nigerians as of December 2023.

In NIMC in the latest statistics, it has issued NIN to 59.1 million males (56.8 per cent) and 45 million females (43.2 per cent). According to NIMC, Diaspora NIN registration was 530,345 as of the end of last year, with 223,346 females and 306,999 males having identification numbers.
