A fire scare has disrupted local flights at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed this in a Thursday statement by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Obiangeli Orah.

FAAN said the smoke was first detected from the E54 Bridge at 5:29 am. The smoke led electrical engineers to immediately cut off power to the entire E Wing.

“The Airport Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) team was quick to respond, arriving at the scene by 05:30 hrs. Initial suspicious point to sparks from an electrical unit as the cause,” the statement read in part.

The incident which later led to a fire, was brought under control by 6:41 hrs.

An investigation to determine the cause of the fire is ongoing, according to FAAN.

FAAN added that flight operations in Terminal 1 of the airport have been diverted to the D Wing pending the outcome of the investigation.

The incident comes barely 48 hours after an airplane belonging to Dana Air skidded off the runway on Tuesday, sparking outrage across the country.

The incident later led to the ban of the airline’s operations by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo.
