ECOWAS Takes Decisive Action: Standby Force Mobilized to Restore Constitutional Order in Niger Republic

In an unprecedented move, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a resolute directive to activate its standby force with immediate effect, aimed at reinstating constitutional order in Niger Republic.

The decisive announcement was made by ECOWAS President, Omar Alieu Touray, as he presented the sub-regional body’s resolution on the Niger coup during an extraordinary meeting held in Abuja on Thursday. Touray underscored the urgency of the situation and called upon the African Union (AU), partner nations, and institutions to rally behind ECOWAS’ determined stance.

The sub-regional body emphasized that their attempts to engage in dialogue with the Niger Republic military junta were met with staunch resistance from the coup leaders. ECOWAS voiced strong condemnation for the ongoing detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.

A section of the resolution reads, “The committee of the Chief of Defence Staff is directed to immediately activate the ECOWAS standby force, mobilizing all its components without delay.

“The deployment of the ECOWAS standby force is ordered to reinstate constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

“ECOWAS reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the peaceful restoration of constitutional order.”
