Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) also called a busway or transitway, is a designed high-quality bus-based transport system that delivers fast, comfortable, and cost-effective services at metro-level capacities.

The first African bus rapid transit scheme debuted in Lagos, Nigeria on March 17, 2008.

Below are African cities with Bus Rapid Transit;

1. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is one of South Africa’s three capital cities, serving as the seat of the Parliament of South Africa.

It is the legislative capital of the country, the oldest city in the country, and the second largest (after the city Johannesburg).

2. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Dar es Salaam or commonly known as Dar, is the largest city and financial hub of Tanzania. It is also the capital of Dar es Salaam Region.

3. George, South Africa

George is the second largest city in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The city is a popular holiday and conference centre, as well as the administrative and commercial hub and the seat of the Garden Route District Municipality. It is named after the British Monarch George III.

4. Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakesh or Marrakech is the fourth largest city in the Kingdom of Morocco. It is one of Morocco’s four Imperial cities and the capital of the Marrakesh-Safi region.

5. Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos is the most populous city in Africa with an estimated population of 15.4 million in 2023. It was the national capital of Nigeria until December 1991 following the government’s decision to move the capital to Abuja.

6. Ogun, Nigeria

Abeokuta is the capital city of Ogun State in southwest Nigeria.

7. Johannesburg, South Africa

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa, classified as a megacity, and is one of the 100 largest urban areas in the world.

7. Pretoria, South Africa

Pretoria is South Africa’s administrative capital, serving as the seat of the executive branch of government, and as the host to all foreign embassies to South Africa.
