How to Safeguard Your Account When Using Internet Banking

In the past, customers had to enter a bank to execute any transaction physically. Today, a lot of things have changed. Thanks to the advent of online banking, people may now do all kinds of transactions with a click or touch of a button.

People can save a ton of time by using this kind of service. Despite all of the advantages of online banking, there are also risks from scammers and hackers. Hackers put themselves in the middle of communication exchanges to steal information, misuse it, and get access to your account. They can steal your money by doing this.

The techniques listed below will help make your online banking experience secure.

Use official bank apps

Only conduct transactions through the official mobile app of your bank. The rationale is that these applications undergo extensive testing to ensure that your data is safe and secure. Avoid using apps that your bank didn’t make since they might steal your banking information and use it fraudulently. Today’s crooks are clever; they may make an app that closely resembles your bank’s official app.

Use a Strong Password

Use capital and lowercase characters, numbers, and symbols to create a strong password for online banking. You must have a strong sense that you are the only one who can think of (and remember) such a password. Additionally, avoid using your password for other purposes and change it periodically. Use a password management program to make it easier for you to generate, store, update, and remember passwords.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication, or 2FA, adds an authentication element to your regular log-in process. You only need to enter your login and password when using single-factor authentication. The advantage of 2FA is that it prevents unauthorized access to your account by requesting an additional verification credential. One of the following is acceptable as the additional verification credential:

  • Something about you, such as a biometric indicator (voice print or a fingerprint).
  • Something you possess, such as a phone, ATM card, or key fob.
  • Something you already know, such as a PIN, password, or pattern (personal identification number).

Deactivate Automatic Login

Ensure that your web browser is not saving any login credentials for your online banking account. Web browsers may automatically save your online banking information. Before you carry out any transaction, disable this function.

Bank On Sites with “https” in the Address

Your sensitive information is kept safe online via encrypted websites. To confirm that your banking site is encrypted, look for the letters “https” at the beginning of the web address and look for the padlock icon in your browser’s address bar. Additionally, you can download https browser add-ons that encrypt your web data automatically if a website offers them.

Use Secure Wi-Fi Networks

Public Wi-Fi networks’ security is not something you can rely on. Since they are typically not encrypted, hackers can readily take information from them. So avoid using a public network to access your online banking account. Do all your transactions through a secure network, such as the password-protected one at your house. Use just your cellular network if you need to conduct transactions away from home.

Use Antivirus

Although using antivirus software may seem like a no-brainer today, most computers are still unsecured. A reliable antivirus program protects your computer by identifying and eliminating dangerous software. Remember to keep your software updated to protect against new virus types. To accomplish this, set up automatic updates to update your antivirus software whenever a new update is released.
