London court has denied former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu bail again

The Central Criminal Court, London has again refused to grant bail to former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

Ekweremadu was denied bail by the court on Tuesday at a pre-trial hearing on the grounds that he might leave the country.

According to Ekweremadu’s attorney, the Attorney-General of the Federal Government and the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom both wrote to the court to inform them that Ekweremadu was not a flight risk.

The attorney insisted that a promise to find him had been made should he represent a flight risk, and that the Nigerian High Commission in the UK had also offered the option of electronically tracking Ekweremadu’s movements.

Additionally, Ekweremadu’s attorney contended that the legislator was unable to flee London without leaving behind his wife and ill daughter since he had established himself as a loving and responsible parent.

The court, denied his bail application, stressing that the bail would not make much difference even as the trial is just over a month away.

Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice were arrested on June 23 and charged with conspiracy to traffic a person for organ harvesting in violation of the Modern Slavery Act 2015.
