Hollywood Movies That Showcase Nigeria

By Balogun Kamilu Lekan

Nigeria is blessed with natural resources, good soil, and wonderful people and cultures. It is a fact that Nigeria is the giant of Africa.

Hollywood has come to recognise Nigeria in several movies and has referred to its beautiful people and their cultures.

Below is a list of Hollywood movies that portrayed Nigeria,

The Woman King

This film is about the Agojie, an all-female warrior unit led by General Nanisca who defends the kingdom and its young King Ghezo from the larger Oyo Empire.

That leads to some satisfyingly revisionist wish-fulfilment, in which King Ghezo and his Agojie recognise the evil of slavery and fight against it and colonialist manipulation in pursuit of Pan-African unity.

The Oyo represent the polar opposite: the evil of collaborating with the slave trade, the narrow path to power that Dahomey must fight.

Money Heist

The Spanish crime drama series La Casa De Papel (Money Heist) has managed to include representatives from every country on the planet and names from every continent. Africa’s two representatives are Nigeria and Nairobi. Nigeria is featured in the display of its #100 currency note.

Regardless of how well or poorly these films depicted Nigeria, the governments are working hard to make it a better place for citizens and visitors.

Captain America: Civil War

American superhero movie Civil War, released in 2006, stars Captain America from the Marvel Comics.

According to the movie, Crossbones and his group had acquired a bioweapon and fled to Lagos, so Captain America, Black Widow, Falcon, and Wanda were after them.

Despite the bioweapon being found, it caused a fight and explosion that resulted in the deaths of several civilians in the movie.

Tears Of The Sun

Tears of the Sun is an American action war drama film about a U.S. Navy SEAL team rescue mission in Nigeria during the civil war produced by Bruce Willis in 2003.

Despite not filming any scenes in Nigeria, Tears Of The Sun depicted the country. It was shot in Hawaii’s jungle regions.

It portrayed Nigeria as a rebel-infested battleground during the civil war.

X-Men – Origins ( The Wolverine )

The fictional character Wolverine from Marvel Comics is the inspiration for the American superhero movie X-Men – Origins (The Wolverine). The item was created in 2009.

In the movie’s opening scene, the General’s crew travelled to Lagos, Nigeria. People with diamonds were present, and a Nigerian was heard speaking Igbo in that scene.
