Nigeria contributes to producing some of the best movies in the world.

Over the years, the industry has developed to the point where it has gained recognition on a global scale and generates significant money. 

The second-largest film industry in the world is currently Nollywood, Nigeria’s entertainment sector. The industry had a market value of $3.6 billion in 2016 and $6.4 billion in 2021, and in 2020 it contributed roughly 2.3 per cent and $660 million to the nation’s GDP

Below is a list of some of the top-grossing Nigerian movies of all time.

1. Omo Ghetto; the saga – N636,000,000

The comedy “Omo Ghetto: The Saga” was created and directed by Funke Akindele. It is a sequel to the actress’s trilogy film “Omo Ghetto,” which was released in 2010 and is about identical twin sisters who were split up at birth.

It was the first Nollywood movie ever to make over N99 million in its opening weekend, grossing over N189 million in its first week of release.

Omo Ghetto made a total of N636 million during its ten-week reign at the top of the Nigerian box office.

2. The Wedding Party – N453,000,000

The comedy-drama movie “The Wedding Party” was made in Nigeria by the ELFIKE Film Collective and directed by Kemi Adetiba. It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the Eko Hotel & Suites in Lagos.

The movie, which had a global release on December 16, 2016, held the record for the highest-earning Nigerian film following its launch, making over N453 million. Funke Akindele’s “Omo Ghetto” will eclipse it in 2020.

3. The Wedding Party 2 – N433,197,377

The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai’ is a 2017 Nigerian romantic film 

The movie was directed by Niyi Akinmolayan and was filmed in Lagos and Dubai, 

It is the third-highest box office earnings in Nollywood history, with around N433 million.

4. Chief Daddy – N387,540,749

Niyi Akinmolayan directed the Nigerian comedy-drama film “Chief Daddy,” also co-produced by Mosunmola and Temidayo Abudu. Bode Asiyanbi wrote the project. 

The movie opened in Nigeria on December 14, 2018, and on March 15, 2019, Netflix began airing it in the Netherlands.

It included well-known Nollywood actors and actresses such as Funke Akindele Bello, Kate Henshaw, Nkem Owoh, Joke Silva, Patience Ozokwor, Richard Mofe Damijo, and Racheal Oniga. Chief Daddy made over N387m at the box office.

5. Sugar Rush – N287,053,270

‘Sugar Rush’ is a 2019 comedy movie from Nigeria that was written by Jadesola Osiberu and Bunmi Ajakaiye and directed by Kayode Kasum. 

Adesua Etomi, Bisola Aiyeola, and Bimbo Ademoye appeared in the movie which was released on December 25th, 2019. The film has made nearly $287 million in Nigeria since its Christmas premiere, making it the fifth-highest-grossing Nollywood movie of all time.
