He had his fair share of setbacks; it was not an easy climb. Johnny participated in the sixth MTN Project Fame period in 2013, where he finished tenth and was eliminated. Even though his fan base was small, he continued to record and release music after being eliminated from Project Fame.

Following the recording of a cover of Di’ja’s “Awww,” Drille’s narrative changed. His “Awww” cover gave him a sizable fan base and, like a magnet, caught the attention of Don Jazzy, the head of Mavin Records. In 2013, he released and promoted the single “Love Do not Lie” using the same drive. His other single, “wait for me,” which was released on August 12th, 2015, attained astronomical success.

On February 28, 2017, Mavin Records announced that Johnny Drille had signed a contract with the outfit. He then made a guest appearance on Project Fame to share his knowledge with the season 6 challengers.
