Plants today range from the humble to the luxurious, with some costing thousands or even millions of dollars when the breed, pruning, and colouration are perfect.

Below is a list of some of the most expensive plants in the world

5. Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma – $27,100

Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma is a plant that grows in southern Thailand and parts of Malaysia. It has broad, rich green leaves with a specific pattern of wavy leaves that resembles cut paper.

Some extremely rare Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma specimens have variegated leaves, which means they have splotches of a secondary colouring, in this case, white. A seller in New Zealand saw one of these plants on the trading site “Trade Me” in June 2021. It was eventually sold for $27,100.

4. Adansonii Variegata – $38,000

Adansonii Variegata is a plant with broad leaves that is well-known for being a high-end houseplant. While most of these plants are unimposing, all-green houseplants, some have large holes between the white and green colouring of Swiss cheese. This expanding pattern is referred to as “fenestration.” Those Adansonii Variegata that possess it are highly prized.

A verified Adansonii Variegata can fetch hundreds of dollars even for a root cutting. One of its exquisite specimens was sold for $38,00 on Etsy.

3. Shenzhen Nongke Orchid – $217,000

Known for their delicateness, rarity, and beauty, orchids are prized for their use as ornamental plants. Despite being an artificial creation, the Shenzhen Nongke Orchid is the most expensive in the entire world. Over nearly ten years of study, architectural scientists at Shenzhen University in China created it in a lab.

This extremely rare orchid’s flowers only bloom once every five years, increasing their incredible value. The most expensive flower ever sold was a Shenzhen Nongke Orchid, purchased by an anonymous bidder for the Chinese Yuan equivalent of $217,000 in 2005.

The plant is distinguished for its medicinal properties, like Vitamin E and Vitamin C, to serve as an adjunct therapy for patients with certain eye diseases.

2. Bonsai Pine – $1,300,000

Bonsai is an ancient art form in which large trees are grown in small containers. When done correctly, the trees have the proportions of massive natural monuments despite only being a few feet tall. Many Bonsai trees sell for tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars.

The tree was brought to the Asia-Pacific Bonsai and Suiseki Convention & Exhibition by Seiji Morimae’s S-CUBE organization, where it sold on the second day.

1. The Kadupul Flower – Priceless

Although no Kadupul Flower has ever been sold successfully, the plant is remarkably expensive.

It only grows in Sri Lanka, where it is the country’s national flower. However, the plant’s fatal flaw makes it impossible to collect or sell because it perishes as soon as it is picked.

Even flowers that are not carefully selected and kept alive in their tiny plot of soil perish shortly after blooming. This means that the only way for foreigners to experience this floral phenomenon is through the ridiculously expensive perfume made from the Kadupul flower, which they can only do by travelling to Sri Lanka.

The Kadupul flower has a spiritual significance as well. According to ancient Sri Lankans, the blooming of this flower summons the Nagas, or holy snake people, from heaven to present flowers to Buddha.
