Top Reasons Burna Boy Is One of the Most Talented Singers in Africa

Burna Boy is a name any Nigerian music lover is familiar with. He’s unarguably one of the biggest artistes on the continent and also one of the few Nigerians with Grammy Awards nominations.

This is without forgetting to mention that he won the Grammy Awards for the Best Global Music Album in 2021, thanks to his album, ‘Twice as Tall’.

Who is Burna Boy?

Burna Boy whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu is a Nigerian Musician, songwriter and rapper who was born by Mr and Mrs Ogulu on July 2, 1991, in River states, Nigeria.

He is the first child of the family and his father was a manager of a welding company while his mother was a translator. His grandfather, Benson Idonije, was once Fela Kuti’s manager.

He earned his SSCE certificate from Corona Secondary School in Agbara, Ogun State, Nigeria.

From 2008 to 2009 he earned a degree in media technology from the University of Sussex and from 2009 to 2010 he earned another degree in media communication and culture from Oxford University in London.

Why is Burna Boy one of the most talented singers in Africa?

After the completion of his academics, he returned to Nigeria and worked as an intern in Rhythm 93.7 Fm in Port Harcourt. After his internship, he moved to Lagos where he started his music career and due to his passion he was brought into the limelight in 2012 when he released his song titled “Like to party”.

Burna Boy is a musician who is passionate and hardworking making him stand out from others.

The following are reasons why Burna boy is one of the most talented singers in Africa:

1. He is unique with his music style

The first reason why Burna boy is one of the most talented singers in Africa is that it’s natural. We can say music is born with him, that is, he has an innate talent for music. Despite the complexity of music and diverse kinds of music, he still chooses to stay in one and make his own unique.

2. His Passion for People and African music

Burna boy is one talented singer in Africa because of his passion for unity among Africans. That’s why most of his songs tackle everyday issues like corruption, police harassment, and all. His mission is to keep passing messages through his music to have a better Africa.

3. His Style of dressing

Burna boy is one of the people that dress in a unique way so as to promote the uniqueness of African culture.

Therefore his style of dressing also made him one of the most fashionable singers in Africa.

4. Self-confidence

Burna Boy is so confident that he doesn’t consider anyone being the reason for his success except for few occasions when he pay respects to legend musician, Fela Kuti.

In an interview he said; “Fela is my inspiration and my childhood hero, so if you think comparing me to Fela is honorable, it’s actually not,” he states. “It actually makes me feel weird. Fela was Fela, and if it wasn’t for Fela, there probably wouldn’t be any me, so I don’t understand the comparison.”

Some people have termed this as arrogance, he seems to be less bothered. Handling social media pressure without losing focus has made him one of the greatest singers from Africa.

He once went viral on Twitter NG when he claimed he’s not a Nigerian artiste and didn’t make his money from Nigeria.

The singer made the statement while responding to various tweets from fans on the microblogging platform.

One of the tweets read, “Burna boy go soon leave Twitter NG for una.”(sic) The African Giant replied, “Me wey no even be Nigerian artist.”

Another fan queried the singer’s response with a tweet, which read, “But you dey promote African culture and you Dey deny your own motherland, all na showbiz as usual.” (sic).

The Odogwu singer seized the moment to reveal that he does not make money from Nigeria as he tweeted, “I’m from here and I live here because I love my home and my people, E no pass like that. I don’t make money from Nigeria. Na only cruise dey here.”(sic).
