Mainstream social media in Nigeria has created the misconception that crossdressing has to be limited to a form of self-expression.

Cross-dressing or transvestitism (not to be mistaken for transgender) is the act of wearing items of clothing not commonly associated with one’s sex. 

Cross-dressing has been used for purposes of disguise, comfort, comedy, and self-expression in modern times and throughout history.

This piece will be talking about 5 of the most entertaining crossdressers in Nigeria, in no particular order.

Josh2funny 

Josh2funny is a Nigerian skit comic, real name Josh Alfred. He garnered popularity for his skit character ‘Mama Felicia’ in 2016. 

The comic still crossdresses as Mama Felicia, though rarely.

Mama Felicia is most known for the remixes she always sings from a hymn book that she holds upside down.

Taaooma 

Yes, she crossdresses for some of her characters. Her real name is Maryam Apaokagi and she is also a skit comic. 

One of the characters she cross-dresses as is a Kunle. The character always rocks a traditionally male three-piece, with an unruly beard.

Zicsaloma 

The singer turned actor and skit comic. Zicsaloma, real name Aloma Isaac Junior first appeared on The Voice Nigeria as a contestant. 

 A while after his elimination, he focused on comedy and birthed the various characters he has today, and most of them are characters he has to crossdresses for.

Two popular characters are Sister Ekwitos with a mound-like headgear, and Mama Despirate, a pregnant lady that is always with a snack in hand.

James Brown 

James Chukwueze Obialor, his real name, became popular in 2018 after appearing in a viral video where he said “They did not caught me”. 

In 2018, James Brown was arrested alongside 46 other people. they were taken from a gathering of gay people.

After his release he took to social media to share videos of himself dancing in heels and graduated to wearing dresses and posing, as a method of entertainment.

In an interview with Hip TV in January of 2022, he revealed he is a drag queen. 

A drag queen is a person, usually male, who uses drag clothing and makeup to imitate and often exaggerate female gender signifiers and gender roles for entertainment purposes. 

James Brown shared a video via Instagram on March 7, 2022 announcing his pronouns are now ‘She/Her’. This means he identifies as a female. 

Bobrisky 

Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju. Bobrisky became famous through social media. 

Bobrisky keeps his fans entertained by teasing about the identity of her mysterious bae who owns a private jet. 

He confirmed his pronouns are She and Her in May 2019.

This crossdresser also revealed in 2021 that he has gone under the knife, because he wanted to create a more feminine appearance.
