1. Electoral Act amendment: Senate bows to Buhari, includes consensus for party primaries [Punch Newspaper]

The Senate on Wednesday included the consensus mode of primary in the Electoral Act  (Amendment) Bill as suggested by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Both chambers of the National Assembly, the Senate and the House of Representatives, however, deleted compulsory direct primaries from the bill. Read more.

2. Convention: Tension as Police take over APC secretariat [Vanguard Newspaper]

As jostling for various positions gathers more steam, there was tension, yesterday, as the national secretariat of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, witnessed an unusual huge police presence.

Policemen in several Hilux vans were stationed in strategic locations along the secretariat on Blantyre Street, in what party sources said was to forestall any breakdown of law and order following continued interplay of forces that led to scheduling the convention for February 26.

3. 2023: I don’t believe in president of Igbo extraction — Orji Kalu [NewsWireNGR]

Former governor of Abia state, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has claimed he did not believe in a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction.

The Chief Whip of the Senate and member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) stated this on Wednesday in Abuja during an interaction with journalists.

4. OPEC daily basket price now $86.54 per barrel [NewsWireNGR]

The price of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) basket of 13 crude oil samples stood at $86.54 per barrel as at Monday, Jan. 17.

This is compared with $85.46 per barrel of the previous Friday, according to OPEC Secretariat calculations in Abuja as released by OPEC on Tuesday. Read more.

Governor Ben Ayade of Cross Rivers State has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts at addressing insecurity in Nigeria, saying the country would have collapsed if not for his drive.

The governor said this on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, explaining that the President’s military background helped in making that possible. Read more.

6. Virgin IDP commits suicide after alleged raped by NGO official [NewsWireNGR]

A young lady identified as Aisha Umar has committed suicide in Borno state after she was allegedly raped.

The victim who is an Internally Displaced Person (IDP) was reportedly raped by an official of an International Non-Governmental Organisation.

The deceased, who was into menial jobs for survival, was reportedly lured to the apartment of the suspect at 303 Housing Estate, near Dalori IDP camp, Maiduguri, under the guise of cleaning the place. Read more.
