Olubadan of Ibadan dies aged 93

The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has reportedly died at the age of 93 but the palace and state government are yet to confirm the development.

When an aide to the monarch was contacted, he said; “Even if he is dead, it is the governor that will announce it”.

NewsWireNGR gathered the monarch was reported dead at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo state.

Another aide said in Yoruba, “You don’t hear bad news from a priest,” and cut the phone.

The monarch, Adetunji, was crowned the 41st Olubadan on March 4, 2017. He was born on August 26, 1928.

He was the first of 17 children of his parents.

Confirming the incident, Personal Assistant/Director of Media and Publicity to the late monarch, Adeola Oloko in a statement titled: ‘Olubadan passes on, to be buried today’ said; “The 41st Olubadan of Ibadanland, and Chairman, Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso 1 has joined his ancestor.

“Oba Adetunji, 93 passed away in the early hours of this morning at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.

“He is survived by his wife, Olori Rashidat Ololade Adetunji, Children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

“He will be buried at 4.00 pm today at his Popoyemoja, Ibadan Palace according to Muslim rites. Other things follow later”.
