Trigger-happy police officer shoots 400-level UNIBEN student during protest

Sub-editorA police officer has shot a student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) during a protest by students at the gate of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).
The student identified as Juliana Martins according to reports is studying Mass Communication at UNIBEN.
Meanwhile, the students were at the gate of NPDC to protest the violation of some agreements by the oil firm for participants of a workshop on the Petroleum Industrial Act (PIA).

Speaking to journalists, Emieye Romeo, the spokesperson for the Niger Delta Student’s Union Government and coordinator PIA workshop said while they were still at the gate protesting peacefully, one of the police officers attached to the company started shooting sporadically despite warnings from his superior colleague.
He added that in the process, a 400 level student of the University of Benin was hit on her leg and was subsequently taken to the hospital for medical attention.
The students were protesting the non-fulfilment of the promised incentives such as transportation allowance to the venue of the workshop.
