Update: Ex-CBN deputy gov, Obadiah Mailafia, died of COVID-19

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Obadiah Mailafia, died of coronavirus (COVID-19) complications.

A close source to the family confirmed the development to NewsWireNGR. The source said the former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was rushed to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital but didn’t make it.

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Middle Belt Forum, Ms Ndi Kato, in a terse statement had earlier confirmed the death of the international polymath to NewsWireNGR.

Mailafiya was born on 24 December 1956. He was a Nigerian development economist, central banker, statesman and the 2019 Nigeria Presidential election Candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He is a former official of the African Development Bank Group and one-time Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (5 May 2005 – 26 March 2007).

He was also the Chief of Staff of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP), the 79-nation multilateral development institution based in Brussels, Belgium.
