Anambra Guber: ZLP substitutes candidate’s name with Okonkwo

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has substituted its candidate name with that of Dr Obiora Okonkwo as its flagbearer in the coming November 6 governorship election in Anambra.

Obiora, a prominent businessman dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in protest over the outcome of the primary election he described as an event “where the party abandoned its constitution and used an illegal process to pick its governorship candidate.”

According to report, the substitution of name submitted by the ZLP to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was completed on Friday, July 30, 2021.

Also submitted to INEC was the name of Dame Jessie Balonwu, a lawyer, former member of the House of Representatives and former State Women Leader of the PDP, as running-mate to Okonkwo.

Dame Balonwu, who is from Onitsha North and South Federal Constituency of Anambra North Senatorial District, was commissioner for education in Anambra State and served as chairperson of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, between 2005 and 2007.

The leadership of ZLP will is expected to formally unveil Okonkwo and Dame Balonwu to Anambra people in the next few days.
