Senate panel begins screening of new service chiefs

The senate joint committees on army, navy and airforce have started screening the newly appointed service chiefs in a closed door session. The service chiefs are Lucky Irabor, chief of defence staff; Ibrahim Attahiru, chief of army staff; Awwal Gambo, chief of naval staff; and Isiaka Amao, chief of air staff.

President Muhammadu Buhari had announced their appointment earlier in the month.

Speaking before the exercise commenced, Bashir Magashi, minister of defence, said the military will do whatever it takes to protect the territorial integrity of the country.

“Our armed forces will do whatever it takes to protect lives and property and the integrity of this country,” Magashi said.

“They (the nominees) are eminently qualified for the job.”

On his part, Irabor said he would use his experience to enhance the performance of the military.

“I want to lead the armed forces in a professional manner,” he said.

“The mandate of the president is very clear to me and my colleagues. I have had instructional and field experiences.”

Also speaking, Attahiru promised to “provide the right leadership” to ensure that the enemies of Nigeria are defeated.

“If confirmed, I will provide the right leadership with my vision of defeating all adversaries of the Nigerian environment. My mission and vision is for an army to be repositioned,” he said.
