Just In: Former Governor Akpabio Again Detained By EFCC, Hours After Interrogation

A former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, has returned to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for more questioning after he was allowed to go home Friday night.

The minority leader of the Senate, arrived the EFCC at 11.45 am Saturday, accompanied by his counsel and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Rickey Tarfa and some aides.

As soon as the former governor arrived at the commission, he was moved into the interrogation room, a source who pleaded not to be named because he is not authorised to speak on the issue, told PREMIUM TIMES.

NewsWireNGR had reported that Akpabio had arrived the headquarters of the agency in Abuja on Friday evening accompanied by his lawyers led by Mr. Ricky Tarfa and some aides.

A senior security official, who asked to remain anonymous, confirmed the development, saying, “Akpabio left the EFCC at about 9.pm local time after questioning.”

The EFCC had begun investigation into alleged theft of N108.1billion of Akwa Ibom funds by the former governor in June.

The action followed a petition forwarded to the commission by an Abuja-based lawyer and activist, Leo Ekpenyong.

Ekpenyong had on June 8 petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the EFCC, calling for Akpabio’s probe and accusing him of looting Akwa Ibom state treasury.
