The Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) Lagos will host the ACI Airport Excellence (APEX) in Safety Programme beginning from Monday May 18, 2015.

The programme which is an initiative of the Airport Council International (ACI) aims to enhance the level of safety at airports worldwide.

According to the Managing Director of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Engr. Saleh Dunoma,“the APEX in safety programme is essentially a safety review – gap analysis of airports’ infrastructure and operational procedures benchmarked against ICAO standard and recommended practices”

Some of the activities expected to take place during the programme include an on site assessment of the Airports safety program in order to ascertain the compliance level with international best practices, Identification of gaps as well as drawing up an action/implementation plan for the airport to address all vulnerabilities.

The team’s safety search light is also expected to be beamed on some aspects of MMA such as its Aerodrome Physical Characteristics, Safety Management System, Emergency Wild Life Hazard Management, Night and Day operations amongst others.

In addition to better service delivery, safer and improved passenger experience, the visit will go a long way towards enthroning a safety culture among the airport work force and stakeholders.

The APEX in safety programme was launched in September 2011 with a pilot safety review conducted in Lome, Togo. Since then, five other safety reviews have been conducted covering four regions, namely Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America.
