Breaking: Nigerian Bar Association Chairman In Delta Assassinated

The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ughelli chapter in Delta State, Nigeria, Austin Icheghe, has been assassinated.

One wonders why the President of the NBA is a target of assassinations, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is a non-profit, umbrella professional association of all lawyers admitted to the Bar in Nigeria. It is engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights, the rule of law and good governance in Nigeria.

The lawyer was assassinated in front of his home late Thursday, according to official information from the Nigeria Police Force.

Niece to the deceased, Egunor Uviesa, said the incident happened at about 9pm as Austin arrived from work and was alighting from his car.

He was accosted and shot in the head by the unknown assassins. Though rushed to a private hospital in the town, he did not survive as he was confirmed dead at the hospital.

Confirming the incident, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu, said the Police was investigating the incident.

In addition, the NBA has an observer status with the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, and a working partnership with many national and international non-governmental organizations concerned with human rights, the rule of law and good governance in Nigeria and in Africa.
