“Nigeria Is At War” Human Right’s, Chidi Odinkalu Calls For Military Deployment For Nigerian Elections

The Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu has backed the call for troops to take charge of security to ensure peace in the forthcoming general elections.

The call for Military deployment is coming as Opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC, kicked against the deployment of the military for the exercise based on a court judgement against the move.

“I’m not a politician, i will not be a politician, part of the law we’ve got to read let me remind everybody who is listening to this, the Geneva Conventions act and they are applicable to Nigeria in armed conflict” he said.

Odinkalu continued, “As far back as 2013,  Nigeria has been in a civil war and we can’t now in 2015 decide to say Nigeria is not in a civil war.

“We don’t have the assets to protect all of Nigeria, given that Nigeria is fighting a  war”

In an interview with Channels Television’s political correspondent, Seun Okinbaloye, Mr Odinkalu gave his opinion on the matter, noting that Nigeria is currently in a state of war, which justifies such action in line with the Geneva Convention Act.
