Diego Simeone led Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night beat their city rivals, Real Madrid 2-0 in a Copa Del Rey fixture. This is the third consecutive derby in which Atletico is upsetting the more talented Real who enjoyed way more possession in the game but their profligacy in front of goal meant they finished the match as losers.

Prior to kick-off, the return of Fernando Torres to his boyhood club took over the headlines but when the game kicked off, he was still a shadow of the old Torres who banged in goals on a regular at Liverpool but this time he showed a little promise of becoming an important player for Atletico in coming weeks. He was substituted in the 59th minute however.

The reigning world footballer of the year, Cristiano Ronaldo started the game from the bench as a result of tiredness as his coach, Carlo Ancelotti later claimed. Despite being sent on in the second half, the Portuguese could not overturn the result in Real’s favour.

Atletico’s goals came first from the penalty spot through Luis Garcia after Sergio Ramos had fouled on him. The second came from a Jose Gimenez header later on in the game. With this result, Diego Simeone’s boys are close to sealing a place in the last eight of the Copa Del Rey.
