Two female suicide bombers killed at least 40 people at a Nigerian market in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, according to witnesses.
“We have been evacuating dead bodies and those injured in the blast, those that died are more than 40,” Abubakar Gana, a vigilante group member, said by phone from the city tells BLOOMBERG . “The second bomb exploded when many people came to see and help those involved in the first blast, which worsened the situation.”
The attacks happened in quick succession at the busy Monday Market, Hassan Ibrahim, another vigilante, said by phone. Nigerian authorities are still determining the number of casualities from the explosions, which may have killed more than 10 people, said Chris Olukolade, a military spokesman, based in the capital, Abuja.
“The wounded have been evacuated,” said Olukolade. “We’re hearing a female bomber was carrying a child. We’re still getting details.”
