Court Frees Detained AIT Journalist

Mr Amaechi Anakwe, the African Independent Television Journalist who was arrested and detained by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 7, Joseph Mbu for calling him ‘controversial’ has been discharged by a Magistrate court sitting in Wuse Abuja.

Mbu had ordered the arrest and detention of Anakwe on the grounds that the journalist described him as q controversial police officer.

Anakwe was consequently charged before a Chief Magistrate court for defamation of character.

Prosecution counsel, Chijoke Okezie, in an oral application, told the court that the police had withdrawn the charge and asked that the accused person be brought to his office for further clarification.
