Commercial tricyclists caused a bit of havoc yesterday in the Ekeki Area of Yenogoa, Bayelsa State capital while protesting the growing menace of police extortion and use of force on highways.
The tricyclists popularly known as Keke NAPEP riders were reacting to the molestation of a pregnant woman who was hit by a police inspector. The Police inspector was trying to hit a Keke NAPEP driver wiwho had refused to give him a N50 bribe with the gun butt but mistakenly hit the pregnant woman. This led to the woman profusely bleeding from the mouth.
The woman was then rushed to Glory Land Hospital. Protesters tried to barricade the premises of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) situated along the Azikoro Road were dispersed by tear gas fired into the air by armed policeman.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe claimed he was not aware of the incident.
