The National Social Contract Initiatives, NSCI, commends the former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida for his patriotic stance over the terror attacks and violence in the North in particular and other parts of the country in general.

His appeal to all Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliations to support President Goodluck Jonathan and the Federal Government in tackling the activities of the Boko Haram sect is not only commendable, but patriotic, nationalistic and befitting the status of an elder statesman.

Also, we commend the former military ruler for condemning Wednesday’s twin bomb attacks in Kaduna where former Head of State and a leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari, narrowly escaped death.

We urge all Nigerians to emulate Gen. Babaginda by seeing the current state of insecurity in the country as a national problem and not a problem that is peculiar to any particular region, religion or tribe in Nigeria.

The NSCI supports the statement credited to the former leader that all Nigerians by virtue of our nationality should be free to live anywhere in the country without molestation, harassment and intimidation.

Nigerians must therefore, see the charge by Gen. Babaginda for all hands to be on deck in stopping the acts of terror by a select and misguided few as a clarion call to help the Jonathan administration tackle the insecurity that is threatening the unity and prosperity of the our dear country.

To this end, we earnestly urge other prominent Northern opinion and religious leaders to borrow a leaf from Babangida’s patriotic call and support President Jonathan and the security forces in ending the insurgency.
“The latest attack by the insurgents which appears to have been targeted at eliminating Buhari has shown that nobody is safe from the evil machinations of the terror group.”

We therefore, solicit for prayers for our President and the security forces for God to give them the wisdom and ability to defeat the agents of terror and wipe out all forms of insecurity in our dear country.

Meanwhile, we condemn the provocative and unfounded statements of former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, accusing President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of an assassination attempt on the life of former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

It has been observed that El-Rufai has the penchant for making wild and reckless allegations that he cannot substantiate all in a bid to score cheap political points as well as seeking unnecessary relevance.

We task our security agencies to take note of his actions which in our view, are capable of heightening the already tense situation in the country and taking appropriate steps to stop the ex-minister from doing further damage to the tranquility and peace that Nigerians are presently enjoying.

We advise him to desist from further acts capable of inflaming passions and frayed nerves and that he should always be conscious in thinking about promoting national unity and peace.

End.

Signed:

Onazi Adadu Onazi
Assistant National Publicity Secretary, NSCI
