Students of the Lagos State University, Ojo, on Thursday protested at the Ojo campus of the institution over poor facilities at the school.

The protest that started Wednesday the students say will not stop if the institution will not provide the very basic amenities to back the huge school fees collected from the students.

Most of the students claimed to have paid about N250,000 as school fees. They kicked against the shut down of the school registration portal, which they said meant that some students, who could not complete their registration before the portal was shut down, would have an extra academic year.

Meanwhile Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) has summoned the Commissioner of Education, Mr Yinka Oladunjoye, the management of the Lagos State University (LASU) and the Students Union Government (SUG) over students’ protest.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the students union government of the university had embarked on a peaceful protest on Wednesday, Jan. 22, over the closure of the university’s portal by the authorities.

NAN further reports that the alleged closure of the portal had deprived the students from registering for the second semester examination.

Mr Wahab Alawiye-King, Chairman, House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, brought the notice to the House at plenary on Thursday, under matter of urgent public importance.

Alawiye-King (APC-Lagos Island II), appealed to the school authority to reopen the portal for two days, to enable the students register for the examination, so as to halt the current crisis.

He said students were to commence the second semester examination two weeks after resumption, but without the necessary registration, no student could write the examination.

NAN reports that the issue generated a heated debate at the plenary, as the lawmakers saw the issue from different perspectives, which almost resulted in an open disagreement.

The Speaker, Mr Adeyemi Ikuforiji, was compelled to call for a short adjournment to enable the legislators resolve the issue at a parliamentary session.

Ikuforiji, however, announced the decision of the lawmakers to invite the mentioned stakeholders to plenary, to brief the House.
