Prominent business executive and socialite, Aisha Achimugu, has reportedly declared a hunger strike in EFCC Custody

0

Prominent business executive and socialite, Aisha Achimugu, has reportedly declared a hunger strike while in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, following her arrest by operatives of the anti-graft agency.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, her legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Chikaosolu Ojukwu, confirmed that Achimugu was arrested at approximately 5 a.m. at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the EFCC declared Achimugu wanted in March 2025 over allegations bordering on criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

NAN also recalls that a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice I.E. Ekwo, had on Monday ordered Achimugu to appear before the EFCC on Tuesday, and to also, appear before the court on Wednesday.

Ojukwu said that their client had arrived voluntarily from London to honour the EFCC invitation before her arrest by operatives of the commission.
He said that the socialite had through her lawyer informed the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday that she would visit the EFCC on Tuesday.

He explained that the planned visit was in connection with an ongoing investigation into an alleged case of criminal conspiracy and money laundering brought against her.

”In the light of what transpired in court on Monday, our client returned based on the undertaking before the court to honour the EFCC’s invitation, but was arrested at the airport.

”She has immediately gone on a hunger strike. She is a prisoner of conscience and our stand in the arrest is that it has run contrary to the rule of law,” he said.

NAN reports that efforts to reach out to the EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale on the arrest of Achimugu proved abortive as the phone rang severally without picking.

Ojukwu said that Achimugu was a well-known business magnate and the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Felak Concept Group, a consortium comprising several companies in engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology.

Corporate Affairs Commission has issued a six-week notice to unregistered businesses to register with the Commission or face jail term

0

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has issued a six-week notice to unregistered businesses to register with the Commission.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the CAC on Tuesday, titled: “PUBLIC NOTICE: CARRYING ON BUSINESS IN NIGERIA UNDER AN UNREGISTERED NAME OR ACRONYM.”
In the statement, the CAC said failure to comply with the notice will attract a jail term or prosecution.

The commission informed the general public that it is a criminal offence under Section 863 of the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020, to carry on business in Nigeria as a company, limited liability partnership, limited partnership, or under a business name without registration. It is also an offence to operate under a name (or acronym) other than the one registered under the Act.

The public was further advised that Section 729 of the Act requires every registered company to display its registered name and registration number at every business location.

“In addition, the company is required to state its registered name and registration number on all its official publications, including letterheads, signage, marketing, and publicity materials,” the statement added.
The CAC emphasised that non-compliance with business registration requirements may result in prosecution and a conviction that carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment.

The statement continued: “In particular, the general public should note the provisions of Section 862 (1) of the Act, which state that any person who, in any document required under the Act (including the aforementioned official publications of a company), knowingly makes a false statement in any material respect commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of two years, in addition to a daily fine imposed on the company for every day the offence continues.”

In light of the above, the CAC stressed that all companies, limited liability partnerships, limited partnerships, and business name proprietors must comply with the provisions of the Act within six weeks of this notice.
Failure to comply will result in enforcement actions, including prosecution, the CAC stressed.

EFCC Arrests businesswoman, Aisha Achimugu

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested businesswoman Aisha Achimugu at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Achimugu was arrested around 5 am on Tuesday shortly after her return from London.

A top EFCC staff confirmed this to Channels Television in a telephone conversation on Tuesday.

The socialite had been declared wanted in March by the EFCC over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

Her lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), confirmed her arrest, saying, “Aisha Achimugu, who arrived voluntarily into the country from London, was arrested by the EFCC around 5 a.m. on Tuesday.”

He criticised the EFCC’s action, describing it as a violation of a court order.
“In light of what transpired in court on Monday, my client returned based on the undertaking before the court to honour the EFCC’s invitation, but was arrested at the airport,” the lawyer said.

He further disclosed that Achimugu had commenced a hunger strike to protest what he termed a breach of her fundamental rights.
“She is a prisoner of conscience,” Ojukwu stated.

However, EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, is yet to confirm the development.

Her arrest comes a day after Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court Abuja, ordered her to appear before the EFCC on Tuesday, and also to appear before the court on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

According to a statement by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the order was made in a ruling in respect of a suit filed by Achimugu against several law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, the Department of State Services, DSS, the EFCC, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS.

Bauchi governor appoints 168 political aides

0

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has appointed 168 political aides to reinvigorate the machinery of governance and deepen participatory leadership.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Mukhtar Gidado, the Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Publicity, on Tuesday in Bauchi.

Gidado said the move was part of the governor’s ongoing effort to ensure greater inclusion, enhance service delivery, and foster a government that reflects the diverse interests and aspirations of the people of the state.

He said that the appointments spread across Principal Special Assistants, Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants and Personal Assistants.

Gidado said that the appointment consists of 63 Personal Assistants, 60 Senior Special Assistants and 38 Special Assistants all on Political and Community Relations.

Others are five Principal Special Assistants on Political and Community Relations, one Principal Special Assistant on Pension Matters, and one Senior Special Assistant on Labour Matters.

He said that the newly appointed aides, largely former political office holders at the national, state, and local government levels, were selected based on merit, proven experience, political background and leadership capabilities.

“They are expected to inject fresh energy into the administration and support the governor’s vision of a more responsive and effective government.

“The governor urged them to see their appointments as a call to greater service while emphasising the need for dedication, loyalty, and a people-centered approach to governance.

“This is because the administration is intensifying efforts to deliver more democratic dividends to the good people of Bauchi state,” Gidado said.

He said the government was confident that the new appointments would position the administration better to consolidate on its achievements, and build a legacy of good governance, inclusivity, and sustainable development.

Presidency has stated that the recent defections of opposition politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress were voluntary and not under any form of duress

0

The Presidency has stated that the recent defections of opposition politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were voluntary and not under any form of duress, as has been speculated in some quarters.

Denying accusations of a one-party state, the Presidency insisted that democracy is not under threat or undermined “simply because politicians exercise their rights of association.”
This was contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday.

“Nigerians migrating to the APC and expressing support for Tinubu are doing so out of their free will, based on the belief that the reforms being executed are in the interest of Nigerians and the unborn generation,” Onanuga said.

This is coming after last Wednesday’s defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, commissioners, local government chairmen, among others.

The defection of Okowa, who was PDP’s presidential running mate in the last election, and others further depletes the main opposition party.

The other opposition parties, the Labour Party and the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), are also grappling with internal crises, leaving observers to wonder if they could challenge the ruling party in 2027.

Some have alleged that the crisis within the opposition parties is being orchestrated by the ruling party, a claim that the Presidency has denied.

“The opposition cannot blame President Tinubu and the governing APC for their poor organisation, indiscipline, and gross incompetence in managing their affairs. It is certainly not part of President Tinubu’s job to organise or strengthen opposition parties.

“We find it curious that those who celebrated the defection of the former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the formation of a regional grand coalition with the sole aim of defeating President Tinubu in the 2027 election are the same people shedding crocodile tears over Nigeria’s so-called drift to a one-party state and authoritarianism.

“While the latter-day defenders of democracy raised no anxious voice against the disgruntled politicians cobbling an anti-Tinubu, anti-APC coalition along dangerous regional lines, even before INEC blows the whistle for party politicking, they are quick to ascribe the political shifts in some states to “bribery, blackmail, and coercion” without any shred of evidence.
“Without any equivocation, freedom of association, freedom of speech and freedom of choice are part of the cherished ideals of democracy.  When politicians and citizens cannot freely join any association or political party of their choice or cannot openly express their views, democracy is imperilled.

“Those opposed to the Tinubu administration should understand that they can issue diatribes, without fear, against the government because we practice a thriving democracy.

“It is hypocrisy writ large when opposition politicians and their collaborators in the ‘human rights’ movement desire that the party of the President should implode so they can gain electoral advantage and cry wolf when their wish does not materialise.

“We want to state that democracy is not threatened or undermined simply because politicians exercise their rights to freedom of association.”

Onanuga maintained that under Tinubu, democracy is strong, and the multiparty democratic system will continue to flourish unhindered.

“His administration remains resolutely committed to upholding and strengthening the democratic foundations upon which our Fourth Republic has stood since 1999. Politicians changing party affiliation is not new or peculiar to Nigeria.

“In more advanced democracies, there are ready examples of notable politicians, statesmen and women who changed their parties,” he said.

Onanuga added that President Tinubu and the National Working Committee of the APC, under the leadership of Abdullahi Ganduje, deserve commendation for making the ruling party viable and attractive to all Nigerians willing to participate in the democratic process.

“President Tinubu is an avowed democrat and a firm believer in multiparty democracy. His political activism and democratic credentials in galvanising and strengthening opposition platforms as a force that defeated a sitting President and the then ruling party attest to his credibility as a tested defender of multiparty democracy.

“We urge all Nigerians to join hands with the administration in protecting our democracy by respecting our people’s choices and giving alarmists, who draw their narratives from the pool of fiction, a wide berth,” the statement added.

Kano State Judicial Service Commission has queried two Upper Sharia Court Judges for various offences bordering on judicial impropriety

0

The Kano State Judicial Service Commission has queried two Upper Sharia Court Judges for various offences bordering on judicial impropriety.

The commission considered the disciplinary action during the recently concluded 80th meeting, where the recommendations of the investigation conducted by the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee were adopted.

The affected Judge, Mansur Ibrahim of the Upper Sharia Court, was issued a formal warning upon evidence that confirmed he applied derogatory language against a litigant.

Similarly, an Upper Sharia Court Judge, Nasiru Ahmad, also served a query and formally cautioned for ordering the detention of a judgment debtor in a manner that suggested personal interest and compromised judicial impartiality.

The commission, in a statement, by Baba Jibo Ibrahim, spokesman of the state judiciary, on Sunday evening, reminded all judicial officers to maintain restraint and always respect the dignity of court users.

The commission emphasised that discretionary powers must be exercised with fairness and objectivity to preserve public confidence in the judiciary while reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy for misconduct and corruption.

Adamu, who was said to have committed similar violence-related offences and served with a series of queries, was found guilty of gross misconduct and necessitated disciplinary sanctions against him.
Also sanctioned, a principal Registrar, Maigida Lawan of the Sharia Court of Appeal, was found guilty of demanding and accepting improper gratification under false pretences. The Commission demoted Lawan by one grade level from GL-13 to GL-12 and suspended him for six months without pay.

“In line with the mandate, the Commission adopted the recommendations of the investigations carried out by the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee and resolved to suspend two court registrars and issue formal warnings to two Upper Sharia Court judges whose conduct fell short of expected standards,” Lawan said.

“In addition to the specific sanctions against those individuals, the Commission issued a strong warning to all court staff, anyone found engaging in corrupt practices will be directed to proceed on compulsory retirement, as the JSC will not and cannot condone any act of corruption.”
