Nigerian students in the UK panic, scramble for work visas over removal threats

Nigerians in the United Kingdom are in a race against time in their quest to extend their stay in the country as the expiration of their visas draws near.

Towards this end, many of the students are now seeking legal means to obtain a work visa after the UK government announced that about 10,000 international students had already been contacted to leave the country after the expiration of their visas.

Recall that the UK government, in an emergency alert published on its website last Sunday, issued fresh immigration warnings following a surge in asylum claims from visa holders.

Asylum applications from work, study and tourist visa-holders were said to have more than tripled under the previous government and accounted for 37 per cent (41,400) of overall claims in the year ending June 2025.

According to the BBC, the message sent to student visa holders read, “If you submit an asylum claim that lacks merit, it will be swiftly and robustly refused.

Any request for asylum support will be assessed against destitution criteria. If you do not meet the criteria, you will not receive support. If you have no legal right to remain in the UK, you must leave. If you don’t, we will remove you.”

International students made up the highest proportion of claimants at 40 per cent, followed by 29 per cent from work visas and 24 per cent from visitors.

To reduce the trend, the government said it launched a direct messaging campaign to remind students that their visas were expiring.

In a research briefing dated June 27, 2025, the UK House of Commons Library revealed that about 732,285 overseas students, representing 23 per cent of the total student population, studied at UK universities and colleges during the 2023/24 academic session.

The 2023/24 figure included 428,200 new overseas entrants, a 6.75 per cent drop from the 459,200 recorded in 2022/23. The top sending countries have shifted in recent years, though Nigeria retained its position as the third largest source with 34,500 students.

US visa policy now requires interviews in the country of residence

0

The US Department of State has announced a major policy change for non-immigrant visa applicants, requiring them to schedule their interviews “at the US Embassy or Consulate in their country of nationality or residence.”

The new guidance, effective immediately, was published on September 6, 2025, on the State Department’s official visa portal.

The update supersedes all previous instructions on designated visa processing locations.

The Department noted: “Nationals of countries where the U.S. government is not conducting routine nonimmigrant visa operations must apply at the designated embassy or consulate, unless their residence is elsewhere.”

The list of designated locations covers nationals from conflict-affected or diplomatically restricted states such as Afghanistan (Islamabad), Belarus (Vilnius, Warsaw), Cuba (Georgetown), Iran (Dubai), Russia (Astana, Warsaw), Venezuela (Bogota), and Yemen (Riyadh).

Applicants are also warned of three critical changes:

Residence Requirement: “Applicants must be able to demonstrate residence in the country where they are applying, if the place of application is based on their residency.”

Fees: “Applicants who schedule non-immigrant interviews at a U.S. embassy or consulate outside of their country of nationality or residence might find that it will be more difficult to qualify for the visa. Fees paid for such applications will not be refunded and cannot be transferred.”

Appointment Availability: “Applicants applying outside their country of nationality or residence should expect to wait significantly longer for an appointment.”

Existing appointments, however, “will generally not be cancelled,” and the Department emphasised that the new rules do not apply to diplomatic, NATO, or UN-related visas.

According to the Saturday release, exceptions may still be granted for “humanitarian or medical emergencies or foreign policy reasons.”

The Department urged applicants to check their local embassy or consulate websites for details on requirements and wait times.

This sweeping adjustment, officials noted, is part of efforts to streamline nonimmigrant visa adjudications while managing global backlogs and security considerations.

DSS asks X to delete Sowore’s anti-Tinubu tweet

0

The Department of State Services has written to X Corp, demanding the immediate takedown of a tweet posted by activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, saying it disparaged President Bola Tinubu and posed a threat to national security.

On August 25, Sowore, through his verified X account @YeleSowore, shared a video of Tinubu during a state visit to Brazil, and criticised the President’s comment that corruption is no more in Nigeria.

The former presidential candidate posted, “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

In a letter dated September 6 and signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the Director-General, State Services, the DSS described the post as false, online harassment and a willful attempt to further an ideology.

The intelligence agency told X Corp the tweet is directed at the President through his official known X handle @officialABAT.

It warned that the publication could provoke unrest among some Nigerians, including supporters of the President.

The letter reads, “The said tweet is still in circulation and has attracted widespread condemnation by the majority of Nigerians, some of whom may resort to unwholesome activities to vent their grievance over it, especially supporters of the President who have started taking to the streets in protest, thereby creating political tension and threatening the country’s national security.

“This is in addition to the disparaging effect the tweet has on the reputation of Mr. President and the country before the comity of nations.

“The tweet under reference is against the transparency on X and the government has frowned at it and found it extremely dangerous, false, privacy violation behaviour that manipulates and negatively impacts the person of the President and the country.”

The DSS cited several Nigerian laws it said the post violated, including Section 51 of the Criminal Code Act, provisions of the Cyber Crimes Act 2025 and Section 2(3) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

It said the post contravenes “Sections 19,22, and 24 of the Cyber Crimes Act 2025, which prohibit and make it an offence to spread fake news or publish content, especially with the intent to embarrass or humiliate others, provoke ethnic, religious, or tribal hatred through online or offline statements; amounting to domestic terrorism.”

It added, “It is not in doubt that the words employed by Mr. Omoyele Sowore is misleading information, online harassment and abuse, willful intention of furthering an ideology capable of serious harm, hate speech, cause disunity, discredit/disparage the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria within the Comity of Nations to damage the image of Nigeria and cause serious threat to national security of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The agency asked X Corp. to take the tweet and related re-tweets down within 24 hours.

“It is against the above highlighted backdrop that we make an immediate and urgent demand on your corporation to as a matter of its own policy, immediately take down the tweet and its attendant re-tweets,” it added.

DSS that should X “fail to comply with the command, the Federal Government will be compelled to take far-reaching, sweeping and across-the-board measures.”

Recall that in June 2021, the Federal Government under late President Muhammadu Buhari suspended X’s (known then as Twitter) operations indefinitely in Nigeria.

That was after the platform deleted and temporarily suspended Buhari’s account, but Abuja framed it as undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

Twitter remained banned in the country until January 13, 2022.

How Ex-Ondo Gov candidate Akingboye reportedly died of domestic violence at the hands of his wife.

One of the wives of Bamidele Akingboye, a former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024, Ondo State election, has been accused of being responsible for his death.

Akingboye reportedly passed away last Wednesday at his Victoria Garden City (VGC) residence in Lagos at the age of 60.

Confirming his death in a statement, his Personal Assistant and Media Adviser, Oyeniyi Iwakun, described him as a man of integrity, a philanthropist, and a visionary leader. He said burial details would be announced later.

However, a source told SaharaReporters that Akingboye’s de@th was not natural but the result of domestic violence, alleging that his wife p¥shed him off a balcony. Images of his body circulating online show br¥ises and deep cuts on his head and neck.

The late politician, also the CEO of Benshore Maritime, Clog Oil Systems, and President of WeAfrica Group, had contested the 2024 Ondo governorship election against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the APC, Agboola Ajayi of the PDP, and other candidates.

The shocking news of the demise of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, an illustrious son of Ikale and gubernatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the last election, got to me. Every death diminishes humanity and this is one that aches so much.

Ultimately, the inevitability of death provides a soothing balm and shifts our collective focus to good deeds as long as we still breathe.

The late Otunba Bamidele Akingboye did his best to cheat death through his numerous good deeds and we can take solace in the testaments of greatness from the people he touched while on earth.

NUPENG says Dangote is amassing wealth on the basis of enslavement

0

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has protested what it described as Aliko Dangote’s anti-union agenda in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

This was stated in a joint statement signed by Mr Williams Akporeha, National Executive President, and Mr Aflabi Olawale, Secretary General of the union, on Friday in Abuja.

The union accused Dangote and his cousin, Sayyu Dantata, of plotting to create a monopoly that threatened jobs, unions, and the economic rights of Nigerians.

“NUPENG is seriously concerned and disturbed with the unconscionable business practices of Alhaji Sayyu Aliu Dantata and Alhaji Aliko Dangote who are scared of allowing unions to exist in their business outfits.

“To us, amassing wealth on the basis of enslavement, depriving workers of a union and voice amounts to creating filthy wealth.

“NUPENG will not stand idly by while these billionaires seek to destroy the livelihoods of thousands of workers, including tanker drivers,it said.

The union also raised concerns over Dangote’s plan to import 10,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks for fuel distribution, which NUPENG claimed was a scheme to dominate the downstream sector.

According to NUPENG, new drivers recruited under the scheme are being forced to sign agreements preventing them from joining existing trade unions, a move the union has labeled unconstitutional.

Union leaders stated that this practice violated workers’ rights protected under Nigeria’s Constitution and international labour conventions ratified by the country since 1960.

“This is not philanthropy, it is economic sabotage.Dangote’s plan will enslave workers, crush competition, and ultimately raise fuel prices for ordinary Nigerians.

“Therefore, all the members of

The Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of NUPENG will from Monday,  Sept. 8, start looking for alternative employment, skills and sources of livelihoods, ”the union said.

NUPENG urged the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to intervene, warning that failure to act would encourage “tyrannical, anti-union business practices.”

The union also called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and international labour organisations to prepare for mass protests and industrial action in solidarity.

“Workers are no slaves; to resist unions is to resist collective bargaining.

“The working class will not be sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed,”it said.

Admission scandal at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, has cracked down on admission racketeering in the institution, ordering disciplinary sanctions against a staff member, Nnaji Kenneth, for alleged fraudulent practices.

Kenneth, a staff member of the Personnel Unit(Statistics) in the Registry Department, was alleged to have collected ?400,000 from a prospective student’s mother, with the promise of securing admission for her son into the Faculty of Medicine.

However, the bubble burst when the deal was later renegotiated for admission into Nursing Science, and the mother of the admission seeker, who made the payment, reported Kenneth’s actions to the Acting Vice-chancellor after he stopped picking up her calls.

This was disclosed in a press statement issued on Saturday by the Acting Head, Information and Public Relations Officer/Protocol of the institution, Louis Njelita.

Njelita said the case came to light after the mother of the victim reported the matter directly to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, after the accused staff member stopped taking her calls.

He said the accused staff member reportedly admitted to the allegation, adding that the case has since been referred to the appropriate disciplinary committee, with the university community awaiting the outcome.

The statement read in part, “The Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has cracked down on admissions racketeering within the institution.

“A staff member of the Personnel Unit (Statistics), Registry Department, Mr Nnayi Nnamdi Kenneth, was accused of collecting the sum of N400,000 only from a prospective student’s mother, promising to secure admission for her son into the Faculty of Medicine.

“However, the deal was later renegotiated for admission into Nursing Science. The Woman, who made the payment, reported Kenneth’s actions to the Acting Vice-Chancellor after he stopped picking up her calls.

“When confronted, Kenneth admitted to his actions in the presence of the Chief Safety Officer, Mr Ken Chukwurah, Chief Legal Officer. Rev. Fr. Maurice Izunwa, and the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Nyelita Louis.

“The acting VC reiterated the university’s policy on admission, emphasising that ‘admission is free’.

“The matter has been referred to the appropriate disciplinary committee, and the university community awaits the outcome.”

According to the institution, this decisive action is seen as a welcome development, and it is hoped that it will serve as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to engage in similar acts of corruption.

Here’s why NNPP expelled Abdulmumin Jibrin

0

The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party has expelled the member representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, over alleged anti-party activities and failure to meet his financial obligations to the party.

The decision was announced on Saturday by the NNPP State Chairman, Alhaji Hashim Dungurawa, while briefing journalists in Kano.

Dungurawa said Jibrin’s expulsion followed repeated media outbursts against the party and its leadership, as well as his public association with political opponents of former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“Instead of dialogue, he went further to work against our interests, openly declaring loyalty outside the party. That is why we expelled him. He has no value to add,” Dungurawa said.

He also accused the lawmaker of failing to pay his mandatory dues and vowed that the party would take legal action to recover the arrears.

“We will drag him to court to recover what he owes the party. It is a constitutional requirement for every member to pay dues, but he has consistently failed to do so,” the chairman added.

Addressing speculations that Jibrin’s possible return to the All Progressives Congress could weaken the NNPP, Dungurawa stressed that the Kwankwasiyya movement remained solidly behind Kwankwaso.
