Suspected bandits killed four farmers and abducted eight others

Suspected bandits killed four farmers and abducted eight others from Nahuta village in Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State on Saturday.

Police spokesman in the state, ASP Abubakar Aliyu, confirmed the attack on Sunday in Katsina.

He said the farmers were harvesting their crops when the assailants struck.

One of the farmers that managed to escape received gunshot wounds, he added.

“The suspected bandits attacked the farmers, opened fire on them thereby killing four and injuring one; they also abducted eight others,’’ Mr Aliyu said.

The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has offered scholarship, through the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI, to the five rescued undergraduates of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, FUDMA, Katsina state, who were abductors on October 4.

The first lady, alongside the Wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, on Sunday in Abuja, presented N1 million and a new lap top to each of the students who were kidnapped from their private lodge at Dutsin-Ma on October 4.

She said the scholarship would run for four years, being the period the girls, Safiya Mutu, Hasiya Abubakar, Ramat Adam, Fatima Abdullahi and Fatima Mohammed, would spend in school.

They are all currently in 100-level.

She said that the Federal Government valued their education and safety and promised to give each of their parents N2 million and the Vice Chancellor of FUDMA, Prof. Armaya’u Bichi, N1 million.

“Since your dreadful abduction on Oct. 4, it has been a period of pain for you, your parents, your teachers and indeed all Nigerians. 

“Throughout this period, we have kept faith and trust in God and in our law enforcement agencies that you will return safely.

“Since the incident, law enforcement officers from various agencies worked tirelessly to ensure your return home. Today we thank Almighty God for protecting you and reuniting you with your loved ones.

“I, therefore, join your parents, teachers and all Nigerians to celebrate this day and assure you of our commitment to support you as you begin your recovery after more than 70 days in captivity.”

Mrs Tinubu also promised to go beyond their safe return, promising to do a follow up on their development both in school and concerning their mental health.

NLC debunks notice of nationwide strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has dismissed a notice of nationwide strike allegedly scheduled for Monday.

Mr Benson Upah, NLC Head of Information and Public Affairs, said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

There was statement purportedly signed by General Secretary of NLC and Secretary General of TUC, Emmanuel Ugboaja and Nuhu Toro respectively, that a nationwide strike would commence on Monday.

According to Upah, the statement is a fake news and there is no notice of strike from us.

“We want to re-assure  Nigerians that this notice did  not emanate from us, and neither do we have any intention of initiating any strike action this period,” he said.

He said concerned Nigerians were advised to ignore the notice and tray it as fake.

Fubara signs Rivers N800bn 2024 budget into law after presenting it to 4-man Assembly

 Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers on Thursday signed the state N800 billion 2024 budget into law, barely 24 hours after it was presented to a four-man State House of Assembly for approval.

Speaking at the ceremony at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Fubara said that the budget would provide the framework for his administration to undertake notable road projects that would connect communities across the state.

“This budget shows that we have a plan for our dear state. One of the reasons why our budget is in the volume of N800 billion is that we intend not just by desiring, to ensure that one key request of our dear state is met.

“God being our helper, we will commence immediately, by next year, flagging off the actual and main Trans-Kalabari road project phase 2.

“We have also in our budget provided to take care of the Elele-Omoku Road project that cuts through Ikwerre, Emohua and Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

“We are also taking that project as one of our cardinal achievements of this administration, we are not going back on it,” he said.

The governor assured that no effort would be spared in executing all the projects in the 2024 budget.

He said that the budget would make positive impact on the lives of the people of the state.

“I want to assure you that this administration has the best interest of our people. It is an administration that wants everyone to have hope.

“We have keyed into the Renewed Hope Agenda of our dear President Bola Tinubu to continue to assure our people of hope, so the best of us will be seen by everyone.

“We will continue to protect the interest of our people, do the best for everyone, not minding your position or class. Our government is a responsive and inclusive government. Our eyes and ears are open to the needs of our people. We will not disappoint you,” Fubara said.

Chief Adolphus Orubienimigha, the leader of the four-man State House of Assembly, while presenting the budget for ascent, said that the lawmakers gave due diligence before passing the budget.

Also, the factional speaker of the House, Mr Edison Ehie, said that the budget was in line with the developmental goals of the government.

Fubara had on Wednesday presented the N800 billion 2024 budget to a four-man State House of Assembly at the Government House, Port Harcourt for approval.

The lawmakers were believed to have passed the budget in less than 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC), had faulted the budget presentation to the four-man state House of Assembly.

Mr Tony Okocha, the state APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, said in a statement in Port Harcourt that the action was unconstitutional.

Okocha said that Section 120(2) of the Constitution clearly stated that no money shall be spent except it was appropriated by the state House of Assembly.

‘’The presentation of a bill to 4 suspended members of the House of Assembly does not fulfill the requirements of the constitution for all the reasons stated,’’ he said.

Police recover vehicles, motorcycles used by armed robbers in Ekiti

The Police Command in Ekiti says it has recovered three vehicles and two motorcycles used by the Armed Robbers that invaded Ikere-Ekiti, killing three people during bank robberies in the town.

This is contained in a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Sunday Abutu on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti.

The command is on the trail of the fleeing suspects who abandoned the vehicles after a hot chase by men of the command.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP OGUNDARE DARE, has also visited the scene of the armed robbery incident at Ikere-Ekiti for an on-the-spot assessment.

The commissioner, who expressed displeasure over the ugly incident, directed the Ikere Area Commander and all the Tactical Teams within the command to ensure the perpetrators were trailed, arrested and brought to book.

While commiserating with the family members of those who were fatally affected and wishing those currently receiving treatment in the hospital a quick recovery, the commissioner called for calm and implored everyone to go about their lawful businesses as the command would not rest until the hoodlums were made to face the full wrath of the law.

Meanwhile, the command’s tactical squads as well as the military who were deployed to the scene on Wednesday, Dec. 13, immediately information was received, engaged the hoodlums who abandoned the three vehicles and two motorcycles they used for the operation and escaped into the bush. The vehicles and motorcycles were recovered to the station.

Naira Marley the Nigerian singer, has demanded an apology from Iyabo Ojo for alleged defamation.

On September 12, Mohbad, Marley’s former label signee, died under mysterious circumstances.

His demise stirred up controversies on social media with several calls and cries for justice from colleagues and fans.

Ojo accused Marley of having a hand in Mohbad’s death.

She also alleged that the singer “spiked my children’s food and drinks with drugs during visits to his residence”.

Marley and Sam Larry, his associate, were arrested in October but released on bail in November after over five weeks in detention.

In a letter through his lawyers on Tuesday, Marley described Ojo’s statement as “false and damaging”.

He also demanded that the actress issue a retraction and a public apology on her Instagram page and in a national daily within seven days.

“It is our instruction that sometimes in September, 2023, you maliciously and falsely published of and concerning our client on your official Instagram handle “iyaboojofespris”,” the letter reads in part.

“Your publication of the above words on the Internet which is readily accessible to users of the system constituted a serious libel and has caused our client colossal damage to his reputation.

“Our client requires you within seven days after the receipt or delivery of this letter an unequivocal retraction.

“The public apology is to be published on your official Instagram handle “@iyaboojofespris” and also on one national daily.”

The lawyers added that failure to comply may result in legal action seeking N500 million in damages.

The Nigerian government has exempted its tertiary institutions – universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and monotechnics, from the use of the Integrated Personnel Payment System (IPPIS) for the payment of their staff salaries and allowances.

Channels Television quoted the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, a professor, who reportedly addressed the State House correspondents on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting.

Mr Mamman, who was joined by other ministers at the briefing, said the new directive takes immediate effect.

According to the minister, FEC observed that vice-chancellors of universities do not need to abandon their work to visit Abuja to process the salaries of their personnel, as currently obtained.

The deployment of IPPIS by the government led to prolonged conflicts between the workers’ unions across the federal government-owned tertiary institutions and the government.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in particular argued against IPPIS citing various reasons including the peculiarities of the universities. It eventually developed its payment platform which it tagged University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

Following the deadline issued by the Nigerian government for lecturers to be captured on IPPIS in 2020 and the eventual stoppage of salaries of those who were not captured, ASUU embarked on an indefinite strike on 23 March 2020.

The National President of ASUU at the time, Biodun Ogunyemi, a professor, while announcing the commencement of the industrial action at the time, said it was due to the non-payment of salaries of their members who failed to enrol in the federal government’s IPPIS.

ASUU consistently accused the government of tampering with the autonomy enjoyed by the universities, accusing the office of the Head of Service of the Federation of taking over the work of the university governing councils and vice-chancellors.

The new decision by the government may, thus, pave the way for the return of peace in the nation’s tertiary institutions.
