How Angry Kano Pillars Fans Attacked Referee, Shooting Stars Players

0

Violence erupted at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Sunday evening after Shooting Stars (3SC) of Ibadan scored a dramatic 94th-minute equaliser to snatch a 1-1 draw against Kano Pillars in a Matchday 8 fixture of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL).

Shortly after the away team scored, furious Kano Pillars supporters stormed the pitch, physically assaulting the referee, match officials, and Shooting Stars players.

This forced security operatives to fire teargas in a desperate bid to restore order.

Pictures of the incident showed dozens of fans wielding sticks and other objects, breaking through the security cordon before charging at the officials, who fled toward the tunnel for safety.

The confrontation began immediately after Shooting Stars equalised deep into stoppage time, a goal that infuriated sections of the home crowd, who accused the referee of bias.

Eyewitnesses told newsmen that several match officials narrowly escaped assault, while players and coaches from both sides rushed off the field amid the chaos.

“It was total confusion. Once Shooting Stars scored, the fans lost control. They jumped the barriers, ran into the pitch, and started chasing the referee. Security had to fire teargas to push them back,” a journalist who was at the stadium narrated.

In April, angry Shooting Stars fans held players, coaches, referees, and journalists hostage for over an hour at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan after a goalless match against Ikorodu City.

Speaking to newsmen Samuel Bamisebi, spokesperson for Ikorodu City FC, confirmed that it was the intervention of military personnel that dispersed the angry crowd and evacuated those trapped in the dressing rooms.

“As you saw in the viral video, the players, coaches and officials were held hostage inside the dressing room after the game. Even the referee and other officials, as well as some journalists,” Bamisebi said.

“So, the management later called for reinforcement, and it took the intervention of some military personnel deployed before everyone was able to leave. The military came to disperse the crowd, and everyone left unharmed.”

He explained that although no players or officials sustained physical injuries during the ordeal, fans of Ikorodu City were not as lucky.

“It was our fans that were attacked. Their bus was destroyed, and one of them was injured during the process. Many of them lost their phones. When they took their phones out to record what happened, they got snatched, and they lost them,” he said.

Bamisebi also addressed speculations that the stadium lights were intentionally turned off to intimidate the visiting team.

“On the issue of the light being switched off, I think it was not targeted at us. The lights were switched off throughout the entire stadium, not just in our dressing rooms. None of our players and officials were injured,” he said.

Mbappe has described himself as “lucky” to have teamed up with Lionel Messi during their shared stint at Paris Saint-Germain

0

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has described himself as “lucky” to have teamed up with Lionel Messi during their shared stint at Paris Saint-Germain, praising the Argentine icon’s humility.

Speaking in an interview on Spanish television channel Movistar Fútbol on Sunday, the 26-year-old French captain opened up about the unexpected partnership that occurred between 2021 and 2023 at PSG.

He explained that it was a tremendous opportunity to share the pitch with the FC Barcelona legend.

He said, “I was lucky enough to play with Leo Messi. I never thought I’d play alongside him, because my dream was always Real Madrid.

“I never considered joining Barcelona. I was really surprised, because everything was so normal in the dressing room.”

The French star went on to emphasise Messi’s grounded personality despite his spotlight of superstardom.

“When you’re famous, a lot of people label you, both as a person and as a player.

“But Messi is completely down to earth; he respects everyone. And he’s a unique player.”

Mbappe’s praise comes amid his own transitional phase at Real Madrid, where he joined on a free transfer in the summer of 2024 after fulfilling his lifelong ambition.

The move marked the end of a seven-year spell at PSG, during which he became the club’s all-time leading scorer with 256 goals in 308 appearances.

Messi provided 20 assists for Mbappe at PSG.

David Umahi, has called on Nigerians abroad to stop de-marketing the country

0

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has called on Nigerians at home and abroad to stop de-marketing the country, urging them to promote national unity, optimism, and patriotism.

Umahi, who stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday, decried what he described as a growing culture of negativity and public condemnation of Nigeria.

“I feel so sad when people demarket the country both outside and inside Nigeria, cursing without knowledge.

“This is because a job is very easy when you are not the one doing it. Let there be a rethink.

“We are all journeying through this life, and there is a need to have lasting treasures beyond this life by putting Nigeria first, by being your brother’s keeper, by doing things with the fear of God.

“I wonder that when our people go outside the country, they suffer more; they pass through all kinds of humiliations and oppressions; they work sometimes for 19 hours, and they obey all the rules.

“But when they come here, they break all the rules. That is not good; let us have hope here. This is the only country you can make 100 per cent doing a job, whereas you can’t make more than 10 per cent outside the country,” he said.

According to him, there are lots of opportunities in Nigeria, stressing, however, that people would not see the light if they decided to close their eyes.

He urged Nigerians to be optimistic, forward-looking and have love for themselves because approaching issues with bitterness and being unappreciative would not do anybody any good.

“There is a saying that ‘forgiveness sets the captive free’, and when you are forgiven, you will find out that you were the captive.

“So let us work with the fear of God and support our government, and of course, engage in constructive criticism. Nigeria is great again.”

Umahi praised President Bola Tinubu’s resilience and commitment in the face of what he described as a terrible economic situation inherited from the previous administration.

He said that the president’s refusal to complain publicly was a mark of leadership courage.

Umahi said as a governor, he knew what the Tinubu administration inherited, explaining that everything became a priority for him, and the burden of debt became so terrible.

Report: Wale Edun, has been flown abroad for urgent medical treatment after suffering a stroke

0

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has been flown abroad for urgent medical treatment after suffering a stroke, SaharaReporters has learnt.

A top government source confirmed the development on Sunday, describing Edun’s condition as “very serious,” though adding that he is receiving intensive medical attention overseas.

“It’s very serious. He may survive, but he can’t get back to work again,” the source told SaharaReporters, disclosing that the minister suffered severe paralysis as a result of the stroke.

The source further revealed that President Bola Tinubu has begun discreet consultations to identify a possible replacement for Edun following his health challenge.

“President Bola Tinubu is looking for a replacement urgently,” the source said, hinting at the mounting pressure surrounding recent economic and foreign exchange challenges. “The paralysis is severe. May God guide us all. This running after dollars is another matter.”

According to the source, Edun’s deteriorating health may be linked to exhaustion and stress resulting from his demanding schedule and poor lifestyle habits.

The source noted that senior officials reportedly work with little rest, irregular meals, and minimal sleep, often staying up until the early hours of the morning and resuming work after only a few hours of rest.

According to the source, Edun’s condition was confirmed by contacts within security circles, including the Department of State Services (DSS), who described him as “extremely ill.”

Meanwhile, President Tinubu departed Abuja on Sunday, October 12, for Rome, the capital of Italy, to participate in the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Level Meeting, with special focus on the security crisis in West Africa.

The meeting, which will begin on October 14, will bring together Heads of State and Government, senior intelligence and military officials from African countries, and representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations to discuss the evolving security challenges in West Africa.

The Aqaba Process Meeting is a counter-terrorism initiative launched by King Abdullah II of Jordan in 2015. It is co–chaired by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Italian Government.

It recognises the complex security challenges confronting West Africa, including the expansion of terrorist networks, the growing crime-terror nexus, and the increasing overlap between land-based terrorism in the Sahel and the maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

Edun was appointed by President Tinubu as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy on August 21, 2023. Their professional relationship dates back to Tinubu’s tenure as Governor of Lagos State, where Edun served as Commissioner for Finance from 1999 to 2004.

He has overseen Nigeria’s fiscal policy, economic planning, and coordination of financial institutions.

Edun has been a central figure in Tinubu’s economic team since his appointment in August 2023; therefore, his temporary exit could impact ongoing fiscal reforms and budget planning.

Despite health concerns, he was recently involved in budget discussions with the Senate on Thursday.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has said that the South-East zone must exercise patience in its quest for Nigeria’s presidency

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has said that the South-East zone must exercise patience in its quest for Nigeria’s presidency, declaring that it is not yet its turn to produce the country’s next leader.

Umahi stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja.

He emphasised the need for political fairness and continuity in 2027, referencing the good works that President Bola Tinubu had been doing since his assumption of office in 2023.

“No, it is not our time; it is not the time of South-East yet. We, the 17 Southern governors, went to Asaba before 2023, and we went to say, listen, it doesn’t matter the political party, but the next president should come from the South.

“All of us tried, but the crown came upon President Bola Tinubu. He is from the South, and so, it is wrong for the Southeast to come and say, Oh, it is their turn.

“No, he (Tinubu) has to finish the eight years. The eight years he took are for all of us, both the South and the North. So he has to finish, and when he has finished in 2031, the south-east can now vie, in the sense that they have never tasted the position before.

“The North-East too can vie in the sense that they have not tasted the position before. I believe strongly that it is when equity and fairness have been established that equity and rotation will become a thing of joy.

“So for me, it is not the time (of the south-east). And when the time comes, we have sons and daughters that are eminently qualified (to contest for president),” he said.

According to Umahi, there are people who are eminently qualified and better than those who are clamouring for it now.

The minister, however, admitted that the south-east had suffered some measure of marginalisation in the past, stating that that was why it was very difficult for some governors like him to deliver the zone for All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 general elections.

NAN reports that APC performed poorly in 2023 in the south-east, with the entire zone delivering a paltry 5.85 of the total votes in the zone to the party.

Umahi attributed the situation to what he called the unfair treatment of the South-East people in the past.

“But right now, President Bola Tinubu does not want to know where you come from. He is treating everybody very nicely.

“The southeast might say they did not get a lot of appointments, but the position of the Minister of Works is equivalent to five grade A ministers.

“The question is that there was a time we (southeast) had all sorts of appointments. Did it translate into infrastructure development? The answer is No.

“But if it is only one or two or three or four or five that we have now, and we are doing over N350 billion projects from Enugu to Onitsha by this president. MTN, N202 billion; and then CBC, N150 billion.

“If we are spending N174 billion to do the second access routes in Anambra state to Anambra second access, which is about 35 kilometres, and we are spending money to connect the southeast.

“Yesterday, I saw on social media where the roads in Onitsha and Owerri cut into two. We have sent people there that are mobilising to do the work; the president has awarded that project,” he said.

Although the minister admitted that there had been some ‘little challenges’ in funding, he, however, said that the contractors had been convinced to believe in the ministry that they would be paid, and so they should go back to site.

He highlighted other roads currently being constructed in the zone, including the Port Harcourt-Aba road (86 kilometres); Aba-Umuahia road (56 kilometres by two); Umuahia-Lokpanta road (six kilometres) and Lokpanta- Enugu (61 kilometres by two), worth over N100 billion.

He also mentioned the Enugu dualisation to Abakaliki, which is N183 billion well as the Trans-Sahara road from Ebonyi to Benue boundary, which he put at N456 billion.

“If the president is doing from Afigbo to Uturu and down to Okigwe, which is cutting through Ebonyi-Abia and Imo for N193 billion by Dangote tax credits.

If he is connecting our bridge between Cross River and Ebonyi within the axis of Afikpo, if he is connecting our bridge between Cross River and the Ebonyi-Aduferegbe axis.

“Is it the Abakpa flyover that the president is doing? Is it the flyover to Obinago? Is it the two bridges within Enugu that failed in the 2023 flood, and the president is doing it?

“So, we have no reason not to be grateful to the president. I do not know what else, and of course, we have the Chief of Naval Staff too,” he said.

According to him, while it is true that the southeast can compete favourably with other zones and that its people can beat their chest that they can do it, they should, however, be very sensitive to the situation on ground.
“Yes, acknowledge the past, but let us also emphasise on the realities of what is happening now,” he said.

Umahi said that he could beat his chest about what Tinubu had done for the south-east in the last two years.

“We should be clapping with our hands and legs for President Bola Tinubu. And the point remains that my appointment as Minister of Works is one appointment too many.

“This is because it is not just the appointment; it is what you have used it to do for the entire country.

Breaking: ASUU declares comprehensive two-week strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on Sunday declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria.

The announcement was made by the National President of the Union, Prof. Chris Piwuna, at an ongoing press briefing in Abuja on Sunday at the University of Abuja.

“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th September 2025.

“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, the 13th October, 2025.

“The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” Piwuna said.

The latest standoff between the university lecturers and the Federal Government comes despite ongoing negotiations aimed at averting another round of industrial action in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

On Wednesday, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed in Abuja that the government had entered the final phase of talks with ASUU and other unions to resolve lingering disputes over welfare, funding, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.

Alausa noted that the Tinubu administration had already made significant progress with the release of N50bn for the payment of Earned Academic Allowances, while another N150bn had been captured in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, to be disbursed in three tranches.

Mandy Kiss has raised an alarm over alleged plans to have her taken to a psychiatric hospital

Controversial social media influencer, Ayomiposi Oluwadahunsi, popularly known as Mandy Kiss, has raised an alarm over alleged plans to have her taken to a psychiatric hospital.

In a post shared on her social media page, Mandy Kiss claimed that some people were scheming to forcefully admit her to a psychiatric facility, a move she described as unnecessary and unjustified.

According to her, she is mentally sound and merely engages in online content creation as a source of livelihood.

The controversy comes weeks after her public declaration to attempt a Guinness World Record by sleeping with 100 men in one day, a statement that drew widespread criticism across social media.

Following the backlash, the influencer clarified that her comments were purely for content creation and not a real-life intention.

“Please, Nigerians, have mercy on me. I am not mentally ill. I am only trying to make a living. They are using an excuse to take me to a psychiatric hospital. Everything I do online is for content and to trend,” she pleaded.

Despite her growing controversies, Mandy Kiss was recently appointed as a brand ambassador for the Lagos State Kicks Against Drug Abuse initiative, a development that has continued to stir mixed reactions among Nigerians online.

Activist raises alarm, says only Yoruba’s are now employed into Nigerian customs

0

Political activist, Mahdi Shehu has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Comptroller-General of Customs of promoting nepotism and regional bias in the newly released 2025 Customs Cadet Officers shortlist.

In a post shared on X on Saturday, Shehu alleged that the recruitment list shows a clear preference for candidates from the South, especially the South-West, at the expense of the North.

He claimed that out of a total of 1,785 shortlisted candidates, 1,244 were from the South while only 541 came from the North.

According to him, about 45 percent of the entire list roughly 803 candidates were from the South-West alone.

“The most outstanding and visible political blunder of Tinubu is that of open nepotism and foreign loans accumulation, an attitude he inherited from Buhari and even surpassed him a billion times over,” Shehu wrote.

“Bola’s nepotistic inclination and perfection is so glaring and compelling that one could surrender to him the title of ‘Emeritus Professor of Nepotism,’” he added.

The activist further accused the President of favouring his kinsmen in key appointments and major government projects.

“It is not enough that he handed over the management of Nigeria’s entire wealth institutions to the South-West. He was not satisfied even after allocating over 70 percent of his capital projects to the South-West,” he said.

“He feels no guilt that he decimated the entire economy of the North. He is satisfied that all parastals under the control of South westerners are skewing appointments, promotions etc in favour of the south west. ENDLESS EXAMPLES,” he added.

Shehu argued that the Customs recruitment list reflects open bias, partiality, and hate and that the Comptroller-General would not have acted in such a way if he knew Tinubu would be angry with him.

He said Northerners now feel hated and profiled under Tinubu’s administration, adding that many people from the region would prefer to live in a country of their own where they are not treated like beggars and animals.

Citing the Bible, Shehu ended his post with a warning: “The wicked make evil plans against good people… But the Lord laughs at the wicked because he sees that their day is coming,” he quoted from Psalms 37:12-13.

“When tomorrow comes, even the hypocritical Northerners will look back and pray,” he said, adding that no leader can build a nation with this level of open, deliberate, and well-crafted lopsidedness.”

How President Tinubu granted clemency to ‘drug lords, murderers’ – Lawmaker

0

Member of the House of Representatives, Obi Aguocha, has criticised the federal government for what he described as selective justice in the handling of the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The Lawmaker accused the Nigerian government of applying different standards of justice to the Igbo ethnic group compared to other regions of the country.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television News, Aguocha said President Bola Tinubu recently granted clemency to individuals convicted of serious crimes such as drug trafficking and murder, while Kanu, who according to him has committed no offence, continues to languish in detention.

He said: “I firmly believe that we must all raise our voices, even if it means doing so through peaceful protests. In the administration of criminal justice in Nigeria, an Igbo man faces a host of challenges that other tribes do not experience. In a recent series of pardons, President Tinubu granted clemency to ‘drug lords’ and ‘murderers,’ yet Nnamdi Kanu, who has committed no offence, has endured extensive dehumanisation for ten years.”

Aguocha, who represents the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, has been consistent in his calls for the immediate release of Kanu.

He said the continued detention of the IPOB leader, despite several court rulings in his favour, undermines justice and threatens peace in the Southeast region.

Recall that Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, since his re-arrest and extradition from Kenya in 2021.

He faces charges bordering on treasonable felony and terrorism.

Atiku Abubakar says young Nigerians are losing hope in the country

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concerns that young Nigerians are losing hope in the country.

Atiku said he feels deeply sad over how young Nigerians are lamenting the hardships, fraudulent elections, and poor governance.

Posting on his Facebook page, the former Vice President told the youths that the change they desire cannot be attained by voter apathy, noting that 25 per cent to 30 per cent voter turnout in every election cycle is not encouraging.

He wrote: “I am extremely concerned about how young Nigerians are losing hope about the future of our country.

“Every time they come to have a conversation with me about bad governance, fraudulent elections, and resultant hardship being faced by citizens, I deeply feel sad about the situation.

“Yesterday evening, I received yet another group of youths from across the 19 Northern states, led by Alh. Adamu Bappa Gombe.

“They were worried about how their votes don’t count and how bad governance and policies negatively impact on their standard of living and private businesses.

“I have continued to encourage them not to give up. I told them the change they desire can only come through the ballot. I reminded them that they have a responsibility to mobilise their fellow young people to continue participating in the leadership recruitment process through elections.

“I reminded them that the change they desire cannot be attained by voter apathy and that 25% to 30% voter turnout in every election cycle is not encouraging. I challenged them to make a huge difference by influencing massive participation in 2027.

“On our part, we shall not relent until Nigeria is recovered from anti democratic forces.”

Chidi Anselm Odinkalu: Senior Advocates of No-Consequence (SANs)

0

By Chidi Anselm Odinkalu

The ritual of the “Call to Bar” is the formal ceremony for the admission of new entrants into Nigeria’s legal profession. The responsibility for administering it resides in the Body of Benchers (BoB), a statutory entity described by law as “a body of legal practitioners of the highest distinction in the legal profession in Nigeria.”

The solemnity of the Call to Bar is guaranteed by the presence of members of the BoB who administer the ceremony resplendent in ceremonial gowns supposed to testify to their high distinction in matters legal. The criteria for the determination of this threshold requirement of “highest distinction” antecedent to membership of the BoB are, however, opaque.

The ceremony itself is usually an occasion for members of the Body of Benchers to remind the new entrants of the obligations that come with their new status. It should go without saying that the members of the BoB should themselves embody those values through their own records and example. It should be no surprise that, in Nigeria, this is not usually be the case.

There are three categories of membership of the BoB. Membership can exceptionally be honorific, a mostly vacuous conferment reserved for political or diplomatic occasions.

Separately, there is ordinary membership attained through high office in public service as judges or Attorneys-General or as leaders or nominees of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). Such membership these days also extends to the chairpersons of the judiciary committees of the two chambers of the National Assembly as well as to principal officers of the National Assembly who are lawyers. Members who are conscientious in attending meetings and official dinners of the BoB over a period of four years may be conferred with the status of Life Benchers. That is the stuff of high distinction. The most recent Call to Bar ceremony occurred in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, over three days from 23 to 25 September 2025. Away from the cameras, on 24 September, something happened which speaks to the existential – even terminal – crisis of values, leadership and responsibility that currently afflicts the governance of Nigeria’s legal profession. At the insistence of certain members of the BoB, one of the members elevated to the status of Life Bencher only in January 2025, Chief Mike Ozekhome, was prevailed upon to quietly withdraw from participating in the process of admitting the new entrants into the profession.

The reason given by the objecting members of the BoB was a judgment delivered a mere

six weeks earlier on 11 September 2025 in his ultimately unsuccessful application for registration

of title in real estate before a property registration tribunal in England, in which the presiding judge shredded Ozekhome’s testimony as “an invention and contrivance.”

According to Gideon Christian, a law professor the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, “this case illustrates how corruption operates [in Nigeria]: politicians hide wealth abroad under false identities, while lawyers – sworn to uphold the law – serve as enablers of fraud.”

The most significant thing about the enforced withdrawal of Chief Ozekhome from the Call to Bar ceremonies last month is not that it occurred. It is that the BoB went out of its way to ensure that it was a well-guarded secret. It is relevant here that in addition to its role in admitting new entrants into the vocation of the law in Nigeria, the BoB also hosts the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), the statutory body charged with enforcing consequences for ethical lapses in Nigeria’s legal profession. When it encounters cases affecting senior lawyers, however, the BoB seems to lapse into a habit of no consequence. On 10 December 2021, the Supreme Court of Nigeria determined that Michael Aondoakaa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, (SAN), and former Attorney-General of the Federation (HAGF), “had, by his conduct, undermined and subverted the administration of justice and the independence, authority and integrity of the judiciary” and “ought not to be entrusted with any other public office at all.” In effect, the Supreme Court barred Mr. Aondoakaa from public office again in Nigeria. The antecedents of this decision were staggering. Ahead of Nigeria’s 2007 general elections, political parties organized processes in 2006 to select their candidates for various offices to be contested across the country. In Uyo Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State, the then ruling party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, in primaries conducted in December 2006, selected Bassey Obot as their candidate to fly their flag in the contest for a seat in the House of Representatives. In a country where the most

consequential things are accomplished by the unknown, some unknown persons contrived to remove Mr. Obot’s name from the records of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, substituting him with one Mr. Bassey Etim as the PDP candidate.

In December 2007, the Court of Appeal ordered the President of the Court of Appeal to constitute a new tribunal in Uyo to hear Mr. Obot’s case. Mr. Aondoakaa, then newly installed as the HAGF, wrote to the President of the Court of Appeal (PCA) claiming powers to instruct him not to comply with the order of the Court of Appeal. He cited as his reason the fact that he wasconsidering a petition from Mr. Etim. Unable to contrive a sensible reason to disobey the order of a court over which he presided, however, the PCA disregarded Mr. Aondoakaa’s importuning and obeyed the Court of Appeal.

In April 2008, the Tribunal decided in favour of Mr. Obot, ordering INEC to certify him

as the winner, so he could be sworn in as such. The Court of Appeal, the final arbiter then indisputes over elections to parliament, affirmed the judgment of the tribunal. In separate letters thereafter to the INEC Chairman and to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr.

Aondoakaa again required them to disobey and disregard the final orders of the Court of Appeal.

They complied. Allegations that Mr. Aondoakaa issued those letters in exchange for value were unverified but not implausible.

On 15 May 2009, Mr. Obot, whose judicial victory had been frustrated by the HAGF, returned to the Federal High Court asking it to declare that Mr. Aondoakaa had abused his office and desecrated the independence and authority of the judiciary. On 1 June 2010, the Federal High Court obliged him, lamenting that “the hallowed office of the HAGF has been gradually desecrated and put into disrepute with the likes of [Mr. Aondoakaa] being appointed and occupying it. It is meant for learned eminent members of the Bar and not for political charlatans, jobbers or latter-day praise singers/converts….” On 3 September 2015, the Court of Appeal affirmed that judgment of the High Court with the hope that “that office [of HAGF] should never again be occupied by individuals of such poor quality as [Mr. Aondoakaa].” The Court of Appeal went further and invited the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, “to subject [Mr. Aondoakaa] to its appropriate disciplinary processes.” In his appeal to the Supreme Court, Mr. Aondoakaa did not deny what he did but claimed that he only acted as an adviser in the letters he wrote and that the recipients were at liberty to disregard his opinion. The Supreme Court made short shrift of Aondoakaa’s chicanery. Describing his conduct as “reprehensible”, “reckless” and “unbecoming of the occupant of such an exalted office,” the Court accused him of violating Rule 30 of the Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC) in the Legal Profession which require every lawyer to refrain from doing “any act or conduct….in any manner that may obstruct, delay or adversely affect the administration of justice.” There were no consequences Before Mr. Aondoakaa, there was the case of Kunle Kalejaiye, SAN, involved in corrupting a judge, Thomas Naron, in an election petition. In 2013, Thomas Naron lost his job but the Supreme Court decided in 2019 on a disreputable technicality that Mr. Kalejaiye could keep his. Two years later, the same court similarly decided that there should be no consequences in the case of Dr. Joseph Nwobike, another SAN whose specialty was “inducing court registrars to ensure that his cases were assigned to his preferred judges so he could obtain favourable judgments.”

Chief Mike Ozekhome is rightly described as “one of Nigeria’s most high-profile lawyers.” Few will quibble with his claim to be serenaded in those terms. In addition to being a Life Bencher, Chief Ozekhome is also a SAN. The combination of these two attainments makes him one of the most senior lawyers in Nigeria. His is only the latest in a long line of senior lawyers whose relationship with the rules professional conduct appears to be governed by a Teflon rule of no consequence.
