Nigeria dominates Sub-Saharan Africa in 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings

Nigeria has taken the top spot in Sub-Saharan Africa’s higher education rankings, with 24 universities listed in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

This makes Nigeria the most represented country in the region, ahead of South Africa, which has 13 universities on the list.

The Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa Insights 2026 report, released on Thursday on THE’s website, shows that the region now has a record 55 universities from 14 countries in the global rankings, which is a significant rise from just 10 universities less than ten years ago.

The report described this as a “moment of celebration” for African higher education, noting that universities are improving not only in number but also in quality and global visibility.

South Africa still leads in performance, with four universities ranked among the world’s top 500. The University of Cape Town is Africa’s highest-ranked institution at 164th globally, its best-ever position.

The University of Johannesburg also reached a major milestone by entering the global top 400 for the first time, while the University of Pretoria returned to the 501–600 range after some years.

For Nigeria, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos both entered the world’s top 1,000 universities for the first time.

Ghana’s University of Cape Coast and Uganda’s Makerere University also featured in the same range, marking steady progress for West and East Africa.

Other countries also improved their presence. Ghana now has four ranked universities, while Botswana has two. Kenya and Tanzania maintained two each.

Senegal made a debut in the rankings through Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar marking a new era for Francophone Africa.

The report showed how fast the region has grown in the rankings over time. From just 12 universities in 2017, the number has grown steadily to 18 in 2020, 25 in 2022, 43 in 2024, and now 55 in 2026, the highest ever.

Times Higher Education’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Phil Baty, said Africa’s progress is not just about numbers butquality.

“We are not just seeing improvements in representation; we are seeing improvements in quality too… a great opportunity to build on the momentum and make sure Africa’s universities are ready to drive innovation and development,” he said.

The top 10 universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to The Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa Insights 2026 report include:

1. University of Cape Town (=164 globally)

2. Stellenbosch University (301–350)

3. University of the Witwatersrand (301–350)

4. University of Johannesburg (351–400)

5. University of KwaZulu-Natal (501–600)

6. University of Pretoria (501–600)

7. University of the Western Cape (601–800)

8. Makerere University (801–1,000)

9. University of Cape Coast (801–1,000)

10. University of Ibadan / University of Lagos (801–1,000)

The report also noted that the global higher education system is changing. Some of Asia’s top universities, such as Tsinghua University and the National University of Singapore, have slowed in growth, while many US and European universities are facing challenges from funding cuts and political pressure.

These changes, the report said, create a new opportunity for Africa to rise further by focusing on research, innovation, and strong international partnerships.

Three feared dead as trailer crushes tricycle in Anambra

0

No fewer than three persons were feared dead while others were trapped when a trailer conveying a 40-foot container fell and crushed a tricycle carrying two passengers at Mgbaemene Bus Stop, near Upper Iweka, along the Onitsha–Owerri Expressway on Thursday.

PUNCH Online gathered that the trailer, whose registration number had been defaced, was navigating through the bad portion of the road inward Upper Iweka when it lost balance and toppled, with the container landing on the tricycle beside it.

Eyewitnesses near the scene said the driver lost control while attempting to manoeuvre through the damaged section of the Mgbaemene axis of the road.

One eyewitness said, “The accident happened at about 6:48 a.m. Due to the large potholes that have taken over most parts of the road, tricycle operators usually use the small remaining portion of the lane. As the affected tricycles were navigating the road, the trailer was also doing the same thing.

“Before we knew what was happening, we heard a loud noise and saw that the trailer and its container had fallen on the tricycle. It trapped the passengers. Three persons have been confirmed dead, including the tricycle rider, while some others are still trapped under the container.”

Another eyewitness, a resident of the area who identified herself simply as Udoka, blamed the fatal crash on the deplorable condition of the road.

She said, “I was on the balcony of my house on the other side of the road when the trailer was heading towards the Upper Iweka axis. It got to that bad portion of the road and slowed down before it fell on the tricycles riding beside it.

“It took the intervention of passers-by, drivers, and other residents before rescue efforts began, during which the carcasses of the tricycles and some lifeless bodies were pulled out.

“Security operatives, including personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps, had a difficult time controlling the rampaging crowd that had besieged the scene of the incident.”

The spokesperson for the Anambra State Command of the FRSC, Margaret Onabe, could not be reached for official confirmation as she did not respond to calls or messages sent to her phone.

Personnel of the Rapid Response Squad had cordoned off the area while rescue efforts were ongoing.

As of the time of filing this report, at about 10:24 a.m., a crane said to have come from Asaba, Delta State, had arrived to evacuate the fallen trailer and tricycle from the road.

Incidents of road crashes involving articulated vehicles and tricycles have become frequent along the Onitsha–Owerri Expressway, particularly around the Upper Iweka and Mgbaemene areas, which are notorious for deep potholes and poor drainage.

THISDAYLIVE reported a truck tragedy at Upper Iweka on March 15, 2025, in which six persons died after a truck lost control and rammed into tricycles and a commercial bus.

The Federal Road Safety Corps has repeatedly warned motorists, particularly truck drivers, to maintain low speed and exercise caution along the Onitsha–Owerri route.

The agency has also called on the Federal Government to expedite the rehabilitation of the expressway to avert further tragedies.

Kenneth Okonkwo, has urged the INEC to declare the seat of Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, vacant

0

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress and Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to declare the seat of Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, vacant following his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Governor Diri announced his resignation from the PDP on Wednesday, alongside members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, sparking speculation that he might defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Reacting to the development, Okonkwo, in a post on Instagram, argued that Diri had automatically lost his position as governor by resigning from his party and remaining unaffiliated with any political party.

He cited Section 177(c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which states that a person is qualified for election to the office of governor only if they are “a member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party.”

“Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has just vacated his seat as governor by resigning from the PDP and not belonging to any party,” Okonkwo wrote.

“The law is clear: every elected official must be a member of a political party. An elected official can defect from one party to another but cannot remain partyless at any point. I therefore call on INEC to declare his seat vacant immediately and conduct a fresh election in Bayelsa State within the next 90 days.”

Ayo Fayose, has said that the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is the only remaining opposition voice in Nigeria

0

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has said that the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is the only remaining opposition voice in Nigeria.

Fayose made the remark on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, while maintaining, however, that no one would defeat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.

“Tell me, who will defeat the APC? The only opposition that I know in Nigeria—let me tell you now—the only opposition, I didn’t say the opposition can win Asiwaju, but the only opposition that still has traction is Obi, no other one.

“The only voice that has traction, that is still talking, that is everywhere despite not being in government, is Obi. I give it to him. But let me tell you, all others are just filling the gap. Atiku is filling the gap, and all the others too, because people don’t listen to them anymore.”

The opposition leaders, including Peter Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and his Rivers State counterpart, Rotimi Amaechi, among others, have formed a coalition to wrest power from the APC in 2027.

The coalition has also adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the political party to carry out their mission in the 2027 elections.

However, Fayose has dismissed the ADC’s threat to the APC, saying that the opposition party is “going nowhere.”
“Listen to me, ADC — they are our old friends, senior colleagues, junior colleagues. Let me tell you that ADC is going nowhere,” he said.

The former Ekiti State governor reiterated his support for President Tinubu but clarified that it does not mean he is hobnobbing with the APC.

Maintaining that his support for the President is not for personal gain, Fayose revealed that he had rejected an appointment from Tinubu.

“Have you seen me taking an appointment from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, ‘Oshoko, what would we give you?’ I said, ‘Nothing, sir.’

“At 65, I would rather be at home, being more responsible and doing other things that I need to do. I have served well — two-term governor — I have done well. Let tomorrow hold itself.

“I am not hobnobbing with the APC, but I have been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time. That is the truth.”

Nigerian Pilots are drug addicts -Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu

0

Former Abia State Governor and current Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, has ignited a significant public safety debate by alleging that some Nigerian pilots use illegal substances before operating commercial flights.

During Wednesday’s plenary session, Senator Kalu specifically claimed that some pilots consume cannabis (Indian hemp), calling on the Federal Ministry of Aviation and regulatory bodies to immediately implement stringent oversight measures.

Senator Kalu used his floor remarks to accuse aviation oversight agencies—including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)—of negligence in ensuring pilot fitness.

“The agencies overseeing these pilots are not doing enough. I’ve personally refused to board a flight because the pilot didn’t seem normal. Some of them smoke Indian hemp; yes, it’s true,” Kalu stated.

He criticized the current medical protocols, arguing that a lack of ‘on-the-spot testing’ for drugs and health vitals, such as blood pressure, poses a “dangerous” risk to travelers. The Senator claimed he had once directly intervened to stop a flight due to concerns over the pilot’s condition, stating, “Some take Indian hemp like cigarettes. If you go close, you can smell it.”

Senator Kalu’s claims follow a period of heightened scrutiny on pilot conduct:

  • NSIB Report Context: His remarks come weeks after the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) was reported to have identified the presence of alcohol and cannabis in two Air Peace pilots following a runway incident in July 2025 at Port Harcourt International Airport.
  • Air Peace Denial: The airline, Air Peace, has forcefully denied the NSIB report, asserting that it maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for substance use. Air Peace management stated that all crew members involved in the incident were tested within an hour, and all results returned negative.

Senator Kalu urged the Minister of Aviation to intensify supervision and ensure that regulatory agencies perform proper, unannounced medical and drug assessments before pilots enter the cockpit. The seriousness of the allegations has prompted calls for a definitive investigation to either substantiate the claims and implement new safety protocols or publicly confirm the fitness of Nigeria’s flight crews.

Cristiano Ronaldo, is on the verge of achieving a milestone no male footballer has ever reached: 1,000 career goals

0

Portugal and Al Nassr striker, Cristiano Ronaldo, is on the verge of achieving a milestone no male footballer has ever reached: 1,000 career goals.

According to Sky Sports on Wednesday, following his recent brace against Hungary in the World Cup qualifiers, the Portuguese legend has now scored a staggering 948 goals across club and international competitions, 805 at club level and 143 for Portugal.

He also became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup qualifying history, surpassing Carlos Ruiz on 39, with Lionel Messi third in the list on 36.

Ronaldo turned 40 in February, but he continues to rack up impressive numbers at club level as well as internationally, albeit against weaker opposition in Saudi Arabia, where he has scored 104 goals in 117 appearances across four seasons with Al-Nassr.

With 32 goals already for club and country in 2025, he is maintaining a remarkably consistent level of productivity in front of goal. Ronaldo has averaged more than 50 goals per calendar year since 2010.

His highest scoring year came in 2013, when he smashed 69 goals and won the Ballon d’Or.

Amazingly, his total has only dipped below 39 goals once in a calendar year in the last decade and a half.

With Portugal set to qualify for next summer’s World Cup, and with two years to go on his Al-Nassr contract, Ronaldo is projected to become the first player in recorded history to reach the 1,000-goal mark in October 2026 based on his current scoring rate.

Wale Edun, who was recently reported to be receiving medical treatment abroad, has made a surprise public appearance in London

0

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, who was recently reported to be receiving medical treatment abroad, has made a surprise public appearance in London on Wednesday.

A short video circulating on social media on Wednesday showed the ailing minister at the O’DA Art Gallery booth during the ongoing 1-54 London Art Fair, an annual event that celebrates contemporary African art.

In the clip, Edun was seen in the company of a male aide while casually interacting with a female official of the Fair, a sight that has drawn mixed reactions online given recent reports about his ill-health.

Edun had taken ill and was initially receiving treatment in Nigeria. The development was confirmed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who acknowledged the minister’s health challenges.

However, a follow-up report by Western Post revealed that Edun had travelled to the United Kingdom for further medical attention.

As a result of his condition, Edun was said to have opted out of attending this year’s World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C.

In his absence, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the global finance meetings, which commenced on Tuesday, October 14.

Baba-Ahmed Accuses El-Rufai, APC Of Fueling Insecurity For Political Gains

0

The 2023 Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has made allegations linking the rise of terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria to political desperation by key figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2015 general election.

He specifically fingered former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, whom he accused of hypocrisy and complicity.

Speaking on Channels Television’s current affairs programme ‘Politics Today’ on Tuesday night, Baba-Ahmed claimed that the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s associates had attempted to recruit militants across Africa to defend his regime before his death, and that parts of that network later contributed to Nigeria’s security crisis during the President Goodluck Jonathan regime.

“The truth is that somebody had gone to North Africa negotiating with Gaddafi. Gaddafi was an international terrorist,” Baba-Ahmed alleged. “He said, ‘I will help you like I have been doing. I heard that there are plans to kill Gaddafi through an uprising. If it fails and you become president, I will retire to your country.’ Right now, he wanted to create a buffer, so he sent Saif al-Islam to Niger with millions of dollars in his boot to recruit terrorists to go and fight in Libya. He sent his former general to Mali while he still had security there.”

According to him, a portion of Gaddafi’s resources found their way into Nigeria through intermediaries allegedly tasked with recruiting fighters to assist the Libyan regime.

“In Nigeria, they gave crazy amounts of money to a young man, ‘go and help these people’ with the intention of bringing them to fight in Libya,” he said. “When Gaddafi died, they sat on the money. They kept him with the recurrent until mentioning the name and then they stopped sending the money. Now, all these things are linked—they wanted Nigeria to burn if Buhari did not become president in 2015.”

Baba-Ahmed, who said he contested for the Senate when the late General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) contested for the presidency in 2011, accused the former president and his allies of inflaming tensions with incendiary rhetoric during that period.

“I contested alongside Buhari for Senate in 2011; you have it on YouTube. He said, ‘soaked in blood, the baboon and the dog.’ Ever since he made that comment, I refused to campaign for Buhari. It didn’t matter if I lost the Senate seat; I won it eventually,” he stated.

The senator blamed the 2011 post-election violence in Kaduna State and other parts of northern Nigeria on political manipulation and external recruitment of fighters from neighbouring countries.

“For a former president to say ‘soaked in blood’… Kaduna is my state. There was serious violence there; many houses were burnt simply because of that statement. They went to bring people from neighbouring countries in readiness to remove Jonathan from office by all means,” he claimed. “So the desperation to get Jonathan out of power caused insecurity in Nigeria.”

He further revealed that his family’s experience with bandits during a kidnapping incident last year corroborated his suspicions about the origins and motivations behind current insecurity.

“Last year around this time, we were negotiating the release of our nephew, and when he came out, what he said was no different from what Nasir El-Rufai is saying,” Baba-Ahmed disclosed. “They are not making much money relying on handouts from the government; instead, they go out to operate and ask for money.”

“My grudge with Nasir’s statement is that he was part and parcel of APC from 2013, he was one of the architects of it all,” he said. “All of a sudden, to come and absolve himself and call others out, no. Nasir is part and parcel of all that has been going on. We suffered; we are victims of Nasir’s misrule in Zaria.”

Baba-Ahmed also revisited the December 2015 Zaria massacre, in which hundreds of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) were killed during a confrontation with the Nigerian Army. He alleged the event was deliberately orchestrated to suppress momentum against the government.

“Go back to December 2015, when a war was supposed to have been won in the North-East—what business does a military chief have to come to Zaria for a convocation, not NDA graduation of recruits?” he asked.

“They chose to follow the route where the Shi’ites were holding. All these things were orchestrated. They knew the exact hour, the exact minute that he was coming to pass because they had the technology. About 800 people were killed because they wanted to tone down the tempo that was building up. These things were carefully doctored and orchestrated.”

He maintained that his nephew, who was abducted and later released, is alive and “can come for an interview” to corroborate his claims.

A Kano State High Court sitting in Kano has convicted and sentenced a football coach, Hayatu Muhammad, to eight years imprisonment for Defiling underage player

0

A Kano State High Court sitting in Kano has convicted and sentenced a football coach, Hayatu Muhammad, to eight years imprisonment without the option of a fine for sodomising one of his underage players.

The judgement, delivered by Justice Musa Dahuri Muhammad of the Kano State High Court on Miller Road, found the coach guilty on two counts of sexually assaulting the minor at different locations in the state.

According to the state prosecutor, Barrister Ibrahim Arif Garba, the convict, a resident of Sanka area in Kano, was charged after investigations confirmed the assaults. The prosecution presented two witnesses whose testimonies convinced the court of the coach’s culpability.

During the trial, the accused denied the allegations. However, the court held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Justice Dahiru ruled that the offence violated Section 284 of the Penal Code, which prohibits unnatural sexual acts, and consequently sentenced Hayatu Muhammad to four years imprisonment on each of the two counts, to run concurrently, starting from the date of his arrest.

Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party

0

Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending weeks of speculation over his political future.

The development, which caught many by surprise, was made public by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

In a major twist, Governor Diri’s resignation from the PDP did not come alone as he was joined by 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, who also announced their exit from the party.

“Gov. Douye Diri resigns from PDP alongside 23 members of the House of Assembly”, Alabrah posted.

The mass defection marked one of the biggest political shake-ups in the state’s history, raising questions about the future of the PDP in Bayelsa, which has been its stronghold since 1999.

Although no official reason has been attributed to the move, political observers believe this may be linked to growing internal divisions within the party and ongoing speculations about Diri’s possible alignment with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reactions have continued to pour in from across the state as residents and political leaders await the Governor’s next declaration on his next political direction.
