Breaking: Dangote begins refinery expansion to 1.4mbpd

The Dangote Refinery has announced the expansion of the facility from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million bpd.

The President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, made the announcement at a press briefing in Lagos on Sunday.

Flanked by his friend, the Chairman of First Bank, Mr Femi Otedola, Dangote said this would make the refinery the largest in the world.

According to him, the construction work for the expansion is expected to begin without further delay.

“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day.

“Upon completion, this will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing the Jamnagar Refinery in India,” he said.

He added that 65,000 workers would be needed for the construction exercise, and 85 per cent would be Nigerians.

Dangote added that the refinery would also ramp up its power generation from 500MW to 1,000 MW.

He also stated that the refinery would produce Euro 6 standard, up from the current Euro 5 spec.

Dangote noted that the refinery would be listed on the stock exchange in 2026, giving Nigerians the opportunity to beshareholders.

The billionaire businessman appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his support.

“The expansion is expected to be completed in three years”, he said.

Hisbah cancels court-ordered TikTok celebrities’ wedding in Kano

0

Sharia-enforcing police in Nigeria’s northern city of Kano have cancelled a wedding of two TikTok celebrities that was ordered by a court after a viral kissing video, an official told AFP Sunday.

A court had ordered the Islamic Sharia police to have the two TikTok celebrities marry for posting the video, which it deemed “indecent”.

Kano is one of a dozen predominantly Muslim states in Nigeria where Sharia law operates alongside common law.

Videos of Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda had circulated on TikTok, showing them cuddling and kissing, drawing outrage among Kano residents.

On Monday, a magistrate court judge instructed the Kano Sharia police, called Hisbah, to within 60 days solemnise the marriage between two for posting videos showing them kissing, an act deemed indecent in Kano’s conservative Muslim society.

However, Mai Wushirya told Hisbah officials making preparations for the wedding that he was not interested in marrying Yar Guda despite having told the judge they were “in love”, Abba Sufi, Hisbah’s Director-General, told AFP.

“Mai Wushirya told us that he lied to the court that he and Yar Guda were in love to evade prosecution.

“With this development, we have cancelled the wedding and have resolved to refer the matter to the judge who gave the order for appropriate action,” Sufi said.

Mai Wushiryar’s parents had on Monday gave Hisbah their “explicit consent” for the wedding while the Sharia police were making efforts to contact Yar Guda’s family.

The Kano State Government had agreed to purchase a house for the prospective couple to meet the bride’s condition.

The court order drew mixed reactions among Nigerians.

The Nigerian Bar Association, the country’s lawyers’ union, condemned the court order as “an affront to the fundamental rights of the individuals concerned”.

“No court has the power to compel any person to marry another person or two persons to mandatorily marry,” Mazi Afam Osigwe, head of the NBA, said in a statement.

Kano is home to a burgeoning film industry dubbed Kannywood, the second largest in the world next to Bollywood in volume, with more than 200 films produced each month in the Hausa language spoken in the region and across West Africa.

The increasing use of social media by Kannywood for skits and songs made the board of censors extend its authority to social media, arresting and jailing several TikTokers for videos considered obscene or indecent.

How Nigerian Billionaire Businessman, Adebutu Kessington Brokered Peace Between Ooni, Alaafin

0

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, have officially ended years of perceived rivalry between their two ancient thrones.

The peace meeting, held on Friday at the Eko Hotel Signature Building in Lagos, was convened by the Odole Oodua and prominent philanthropist, Sir Kessington Adebutu, as part of activities marking his 90th birthday celebration.

According to a statement issued by the palace of the Ooni of Ife, both monarchs reaffirmed their joint commitment to peace, unity, and the advancement of Yorubaland.

“They announced the creation of a Joint Council of Yoruba Unity, a body that will focus on peacebuilding, cultural preservation, and socioeconomic development across Yorubaland,” the statement read.

In a communique jointly signed after the meeting, the two monarchs emphasised the need for continued collaboration and dialogue between traditional institutions in the region.

“Today marks a defining moment in our shared history. We are committed to promoting harmony among Yoruba sons and daughters and to upholding the sacred values of mutual respect and brotherhood bequeathed to us by our forebears,” the communiqué stated.

The session, attended by eminent Yoruba leaders, traditional rulers, and cultural custodians, focused on strengthening inter-kingdom cooperation and encouraging other monarchs to emulate the spirit of unity demonstrated by the Ooni and Alaafin.

In their closing prayers, the two revered rulers jointly sought divine guidance, peace, and prosperity for Yorubaland, Nigeria, and the African continent at large. The event ended with an exchange of goodwill and royal blessings between the thrones of Ile-Ife and Oyo.

Speaking after the meeting, the billionaire businessman Sir Adebutu expressed delight at the reconciliation, describing it as a symbolic step toward enduring peace and progress in Yoruba land.

“I am deeply fulfilled to witness this moment of unity between our two foremost monarchs. This milestone will go a long way in fostering harmony, development, and pride among the Yoruba people,” Adebutu said.

The development is being hailed across the South-West as a new chapter in Yoruba history, one that prioritises cooperation over rivalry, and unity over division.

Over 50 Generals to go as Tinubu sacks Service Chiefs, triggers retirements within the military hierarchy

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday sacked the service chiefs and appointed their replacements.
The statement announcing their removal, signed by the special adviser to the president on media and public communication, Sunday Dare, said the action was taken in furtherance of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen the national security architecture.

The President appointed former Army Chief, General Olufemi Oluyede, as the new Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa.
The new Chief of Army Staff is Major-General W. Shaibu. Air Vice Marshal S. K. Aneke becomes Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas is the new Chief of Naval Staff.
The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E. A. P. Undiendeye, retains his position.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Musa, and the other service chiefs for their patriotic service and dedicated leadership.
The President urged the newly appointed service chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them and to further enhance the professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“All appointments take immediate effect,” the statement said.
Those sacked with General Musa are the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar.
Friday’s changes mark the second major reshuffle of the military high command since President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

Yesterday’s change comes amid growing public outcry as the country continues to battle terrorism, banditry, and other forms of violent crime across several regions.

General Musa and those asked to leave with him had been in office since June 2023 and oversaw several major operations against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and armed bandits in the North-East and North-West.
Security analysts are unanimous that their tenure recorded significant gains.
Despite that, continued attacks and killings in different parts of the country had fuelled calls for a change in strategy and leadership.
The changes also came a few days after widespread rumours of an attempted coup to unseat President Tinubu surfaced in the media.

The development is also expected to trigger retirements within the military hierarchy, as some senior generals who are contemporaries of the outgoing service chiefs may have to proceed on retirement in line with military tradition.

The new service chiefs, who are members of Course 40 of the Nigerian Defence Academy, will replace their predecessors who are members of Course 39, including the new Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede.
By this appointment, generals from Course 39 and some from Course 40 across the services will have to retire from their positions, as they are not expected to salute their juniors who have now been elevated above them.
LEADERSHIP Weekend reports that members of Course 39 are still in active service, occupying strategic positions such as Principal Staff Officers (PSOs) at the Service Headquarters and Commanders of tri-service institutes.
Military sources said more than 50 such generals will have to voluntarily exit the service to allow the new service chiefs to exercise control over the affairs of the military.
Profiles Of The New Service Chiefs

EPL: Why Liverpool suffered fourth straight defeat in 3-2 loss to Brentford

0

Liverpool slumped to a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat as Brentford bullied the defending champions in a 3-2 win on Saturday.

Goals from Dango Ouattara, Kevin Schade, and Igor Thiago secured victory for the Bees, who climb to 10th in the table.

Liverpool slip to sixth and could be seven points adrift of leaders Arsenal by Sunday as their title defence has collapsed in spectacular style over the past month.

The Reds have lost five of their last six games in all competitions as Arne Slot appears lost for answers in how to develop a cohesive team from a Premier League record spend of nearly £450 million ($600 million) in the transfer window.

One of Slot’s big decisions was taken out of his hands as Alexander Isak missed out due to a groin injury, but Mohamed Salah did return from the side that thrashed Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday to snap a four-game losing streak.

Brentford have long been exponents of the long throw-in tactic that has become popular across the Premier League this season.

Liverpool struggled to deal with the flight of Michael Kayode’s throw-ins all night, and it was the source of the opening goal.

Kristoffer Ajer flicked on the Italian’s wicked delivery, and Ouattara volleyed in.

Liverpool showed flickers of life, and Florian Wirtz should have netted his first goal for the club when the £100 million signing fired wide from inside the area.

– Liverpool’s implosion –

But despite Brentford’s lack of possession, they continued to pose the greater goal threat.

Giorgi Mamardashvili tipped over Mikkel Damsgaard’s dipping strike.
Damsgaard then created Brentford’s second with a brilliant through ball that saw Schade leave Ibrahima Konate trailing before firing low past Mamardashvili.

Liverpool have now conceded at least twice in six of their nine league games so far this season.

Milos Kerkez’s struggles since a £40 million move from Bournemouth have played a major part in Liverpool’s implosion.

The Hungarian made amends for another shaky display when he turned in Conor Bradley’s cross five minutes into the first half stoppage time.

Brentford were furious as the referee had signalled for only three minutes to be added.

However, the home side benefited when a VAR intervention awarded a penalty for Virgil van Dijk’s kick on Ouattara on the hour mark.

A free-kick had initially been given, but replays showed the Liverpool captain made contact just inside the area.

Thiago sent Mamardashvili the wrong way, and there was no way back for Liverpool after another disjointed and dispirited display from the defending champions.

Salah was denied by Sepp van den Berg’s desire to throw his body in the way of his shot with the chance to pull a goal back immediately.

The Egyptian did eventually end his six-game goal drought at club level in spectacular fashion by controlling Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross and smashing in off the underside of the bar in the 89th minute.

But it was too little, too late to slow Liverpool’s dramatic decline since the disruption of a squad overhaul in the summer and the grief caused by the shock death of Diogo Jota in a car accident in July.

Liverpool Coach Arne Slot and Captain Virgil Van Dijk have reacted to the club’s fourth Premier League defeat in a row

0

Liverpool Coach Arne Slot and Captain Virgil Van Dijk have reacted to the club’s fourth Premier League defeat in a row, calling on the fans to stand by the team.

According to Fabrizio Romano’s post on Sunday, Slot was quoted as saying, “The teams have a certain playing style against us, which is a very good strategy to play against us. We have not found an answer yet.

“Also, it’s not an excuse, but playing so many games away didn’t help,” he said.

On his part, Van Dijk said, “Everyone has to look in the mirror, including myself”.

“I am sure we will get out of this. But we won’t do it just by talking about it. We will try to improve. The fans who were celebrating with us last season should stand by us now,” he added.

Liverpool slumped to a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat as Brentford bullied the defending champions in a 3-2 win on Saturday.

Liverpool’s next game is in the EFL Cup fourth round tie against Crystal Palace on Wednesday at Anfield.
