In Yaoundé, Nigeria’s Super Falcons Beat Cameroon To Win 8th African Title

The Nigerian Super Falcons have emerged champions of Africa again after beating Cameroon 1-0 in the finals of the 2016 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations on Saturday.

Desire Oparanozie scored the only goal that saw the Falcons beat the Indomitable Lionesses in a nervy final match played at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Omnisports Stadium in Yaoundé.

The win has seen Nigeria secure their eight African title even as Coach of the Nigeria team, Omagbemi became the second individual to win the AWCON as a player and a coach.

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Nigeria’s Super Falcons on their victory over the senior female football team of Cameroon on Saturday at the final game of the women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Yaounde.

In a statement his media aide, the President, who described the hard-earned victory over the Indomitable Lionesses as “very sweet and well-deserved,” particularly commended the Nigerian women for their “indomitable spirit, resilience and team work” which spurred them to victory in spite of a vociferous home crowd.

He noted that the Nigerian team achieved “this feat of being African champions for the 8th time,” a development he said has lifted the spirits of sports-loving Nigerians. The president enjoined other Nigerian sports men and women to emulate the exemplary attitude of the

Super Falcons who placed the interest of the nation above personal interests, while assuring that the Federal Government would not relent in doing its best to promote sports within available resources.

The President also “salutes the technical competence of the coaching crew, which enabled the Nigerian players to overcome their hard-fighting opponents throughout the competition.”
