Basketmouth, real name – Bright Okpocha, is a Nigerian comedian, actor, TV presenter, producer, and MC.

He was born on September 14th, 1978, in Lagos State. 

Bright is the convener of the popular comedy show, Basketmouth Uncensored

The award-winning comedian is one of the richest stand-up comedians in Nigeria

Education

After his primary and secondary education, Bright proceeded to the University of Benin in Edo State, where he bagged a degree in Sociology and Anthropology.

Career

Basketmouth started as a drummer in 1991 before drifting into rapping in 1994. 

In 1995, he created “Da Psychopaths,” a group of seven people, and started performing and rapping. However, the group disbanded before issuing any recordings.

Together with his brother Godwin and Muyiwa Ola-Phillips, he formed the rap group “Da Oddz,” which played a few shows but was unable to gain popularity because the general public did not accept their brand of rap.

Basketmouth appeared in the “Gra Gra” music video by Lagbaja in 2000.

In 2005, Bright was discovered by Oppa Williams when he participated in his comedy program “Night of a Thousand Laughs.” 

Basketmouth appeared in “My Flatmates,” an African magic show, in 2016. In addition, he recently announced the release of his online comic series “Papa Benji” in December 2020.

Basket Mouth has appeared on some of the world’s biggest stages, including The Comedy Central Special, The Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, Canada, and the Comedy Store. He has also collaborated with international comedians such as Red Grant, Melanie Camacho, Jeff Ross, Hanibal Buress, and Deray Davis.

In 2014, Basketmouth launched his record label Barons World Entertainment.

He released the highlife album ‘Yabasi’ as a soundtrack for the film ‘Papa Benji’ in November 2020. The album featured artists such as Ladipoe, BOJ, The Cavemen, Bez, Waje, Duncan Mighty, Flavour, and Phyno.

In 2022, he released another album which featured artists like Johnny Drille, Simi, M.I Abaga, Buju, Peruzzi, Oxlade, Reekado Banks, Falz, Magnito, Illbliss, Dremo, and Flavour.

Basketmouth is married to Elsie Ngowi Uzoma, and they are blessed with three children, two daughters and a son. However, Basketmouth announced his separation with Elsie in December 2022

The Bright Okpocha Foundation, a nonprofit foundation, was founded by Basketmouth. He founded the organization to bring holiday cheer to hospital people.

Controversy

Basketmouth took to his Instagram to announce the end of his marriage with his wife, Elsie.

He reportedly announced on an Instagram post with the caption, “For the first and last time”. And also, however, asked the public to “respect our privacy as we navigate through these times”.

They had been married for 12 years before Basketmouth made this announcement.
